There are still plenty of individual pieces available on-line.

My FLGS still has a pair of narrow passage sets.

Now as to the original poster's question:

I got, originally, the Cavern Set and the Rooms and Passages set. Doesn't sound like a bunch, does it?

Well, let me just say it's more than you could possibly imagine, to be quite honest. There's so much you can do with just those sets - and I hate to sound like a cheerleader but it's 100% true. Small fortresses, medium-sized dungeons...it's all there.

I recommend as a "starter":

Rooms and Passages
Wicked Additions (1 or 2, whichever looks cooler!)
Advanced Builder's Set

If you're on a budget, Rooms and Passages and a few extra "long" hallway pieces, and perhaps an extra set of corner pieces (round, square or angled) and maybe a staircase. You will be amazed at what you can do.

The way to "use" DF best, I've found, is as your collection is growing, start out by paper mapping the "mundane" areas like hallways, the infamous 20x20 rooms and the like, but for your big showdowns, build the large rooms. If you know (and as the DM, you should) that there's going to be a "big fight" or running battle happening, that's when you break out your DF. Now, once you've got a fair amount of stuff bought - and it's less expensive than you think especially if you can get little pieces here and there - you can start prebuilding whole "dungeons" and go from there.

That's my recommendation, anyway. I'm sure others might think differently.

Also learning how to double up walls is an incredible skill. (one which I'm slowly figuring out)

It allows you to maximize the amount of rooms/areas with the least amount of pieces.

The room & passage set, a cavern set, and any wik-ed set. Would serve a "normal" Dm for a life time.

Non-Normal DM's (Like Me!) get 2 or more of every set......Why?

1) Crazy

2) Big Big Set-ups.

3) Want to be ready for any set-up need (No matter how Unlikely)

Hmmm... As You Can See there are a Variety of Differing Stategies for this Process... If I Am to Be Honest I Have to First Admit that My Collection Started More Or Less Like This:

WEEK ONE:

Veto- "Hey James, What is This Kewl Stuff!?!?"
James- (One Time Proprietor of a Local, and Sadly no Longer Open Game Store)- "It's Called Master Maze."
Veto- "I Want it All... Everything They Make... Gimmee'... Gimmee"...!"
James- "Well These Are The First Few Sets, But I Think They are Planning to Release Some New Stuff Soon."

WEEK TWO:

Veto- ...<Starts Looking At The "Survey Sheet" That Came With The Original Sets for the Zillionth Time>... Mutters/ Drools "Oh I Hope they Make That... Oh and That One... And Yes I'd Pay That For Pre-painted Figs!"

WEEK THREE: (By Phone)...

Veto- "Hey James any News Yet On NEW DF Releases?"
James- "I Said I'd Call You When I Knew They Were Going to Be Available."
Veto- "I Know... I Know... I Just Wish They Had a Web Site."

Fast Forward to Like Week Fifty Nine or Something... (By Phone)...

James- "Yup They're Here, You Want Me To Hold 1 Of Each Set For You?"

Well... A Tangent Perhaps and a Pointless One... But the Fact Is I Can Not Tell You Exactly Which was my First Set (I Think it was the Deluxe Room Set), but the Point is I Did not Really Plan it Well, Mostly I Just Baught the Latest Set if Possible, and During "Dry" Spells I Would Maybe Buy the Odd Floor Piece or an Extra Box of Corners...

If I Had Really Thought about it I Might Have Made More Frequent Purchases of the Individual Pieces: a Box of Walls, A Box of Corners and a Box of Floors... Presto a Small Room for Less than or around $30.00... (Cheaper than the Ogres Den), Do Not Get Me Wrong it is Great (And Usefull) to Have A Huge Box Full of Diagonal Walls... But they End Up Being Used as Extra Corner Pieces Like as Not...

I Really Do Think That Figureing Out What You Need for YOUR Games is the Way to Go, and then Buy That Stuff... Example: I Did not Bother with the Ogres Den Until I Had a Game Coming Up in Which I was Using a Church From The Miniature Building Authority (Great Stuff For Towns By The Way)... and Wanted a Unique "Basement/Celler"... I Had Sworn I Would Never Buy a Single Room For $60.00, But then all of a Sudden it Was Just What I Needed so I Did it...

I Can not even Begin To Tell You How awesome it is to Have a Bunch of the 6" Wall Sections and a Few Large Floors (Don't Forget Your Corners)... Almost anything Can Be Built with Just These... All of The Add Ons are Brilliant Eye Candy and I Love it All...

Void Lord - You sure type a lot and fast :D

So your saying: Why plan at all? Since your probably going to Freak Out and buy everything eventually! ;)

I too order the odd bit here and there. At first Corners seemed very important (Thor's law of Four: You can only have as many ROOMS as you have multiples of 4 corners!!!) Then at DM school I started learning how to use common walls (2 Rooms only 6 corners not 8) and how the circular stairs and other pieces could help you "cheat" Thor's Law of 4)

Now I'm into LONG passages. (We have a LONG table) :D

So Dear Novice: BUY EVERYTHING you can affored ! (You really will be happy) 8)

Thor,

Thanks... I Think...<Chuckle>... But I Really Do Think Knowing what your Objextive is First Can Help Someone Figure out how much of What they Need... And Of Course When/ If the GM Map-tool thing ever comes Back it Could be Highly Useful for Planning before Buying...

As To Corners I Agree That there are Merits to Thors Rule of Four, even Whilst Using Other Pieces for Corners... Either way, Buying a Couple of Boxes of Corners is a Good Investment (Enough For Three Squared Rooms, Great for Making Cells Etc...)

Yea, I soon realized you need lots and lots of corners.

I'm going to stop checking in on the "map-maker" thingy. Hope sombody posts here when it's up.

My Least useful set: Narrow passages. (But I need it once in a blue moon.)

I Guess I Should Add the Narrow Passage set to the Maybe One Day List... But Did I Not Read Something on one of these Posts that there would be no More of them?

Yup, It's gone. No more in DF stock.

BUT: Still out there with sub-venders & DW still stocks individual pieces (You could "build" a set from these) DF has to stop producing one set so we can get New ones. Ugly fact of life.

I would try and snag at least.

1) Wide to narrow corridor pieces. (2 in set)

2) A handful of narrow straight passages.

It's a great set don't get me wrong. But when compared to the Caverns!!! ;)

I like to have lottsa secret crawl-ways and such in my dungeons and these work great. My standard use for them are 1m x 1m crawl tunnels. The Pc's hate them because who ever is first is the only one capable of decent actions.

By the way the D&D minis (1 inch black base) work fine with these :P
