It's a hydra, I have some old TSR toys from circa 1980. The hydra and "huge" fire elemental still work quite well.

Ah... yes i know of that line, never had any but know of them... it looked like a "toy/Action figure" was hoping it was something more recent, always on the look out for toys that work good as minis...

Mystic has now put out "rivers" but the streams are only 5 scale feet wide and on a 2 inch by 2 inch format. They look nice, but I expect DF's will be better when they arrive. I'll probably get at least one set of the Mystic to use as water hazards, as a 5' wide stream is pretty big in an enclosed tunnel.

Thanks for the heads-up -- I just checked out their new stuff.

I agree with you -- not that impressive. I expected it would look SOMETHING like this, and while the narrowness is a big problem, I may have been unimpressed with something even more elaborate.

The fact is, I have all these Hirst Arts molds, and it occurs to me now that it would be VERY easy to make some river pieces of my own. I am not saying they'd be as good as some of the stuff people have shown here -- heck, they wouldn't be as good as ANY of the stuff people have shown here. But I could do something, and it would be essentially free, since I already own everything I'd need.

As I see it, I have three possible ways to go:

1. Straightforward, if odd-looking, floor pieces that are 4x4 or 6x6, bordered with DF-style square tiles, with a river in the middle. Some would be straight, some L-shaped, and some T-shaped. Combine for hours of fun.

2. As above, but with SOME kind of border so the river isn't just a Disney ride in the middle of a dungeon. This would be tough, as I don't have molds for anything like this. Still, if I used the above method for a base, I could probably just add rocks etc. to the banks for a more natural looking river. It'd still be in the regular dungeon style, though, not the cavern one.

3. As either of the above, but paint it so it isn't water. Magical goo, lava, whatever -- something that would suggest a dungeon-crafter has MADE this stream, designed it to channel something to make it accessible to the labs/kitchen/study/torture chamber. Irrigation.

For the river itself, I'd just use plaster that I mix around and let dry in a nice flowy way, then paint. It wouldn't be resin, it wouldn't be perfect, but it would suffice. For now, at least.....

That hydra is about the right size to scale with D&D plastic miniatures, so you are lucky to have it since it looks like it will be a while before WOTC puts out a prepainted hydra mini. Thanks for the heads up about the Mystic River pieces. I just ordered some to use while we wait for Dwarven Forge to do their underground lakes and rivers set.

JR Miniatures put out a "rubber" flexible river system. There is 15mm and 28mm scale. The 15mm could be smaller streams. It is all pretty cool, and they are pre painted.

Of course it would only compliment DFs river set. :)
