O.k., this isn't DF related but at the encouragement of my wife, I thought I'd post this here and share it with the rest of my fellow DF junkies...

So I picked up a really good link from this post a week ago: theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=45479 to classictoysoldiers.com and as a result, I found some really cool 54mm firefighters to get for my two-year-old son.

He's really, really into all things firefighter related right now and everytime he sees a fire engine he gets all ga-ga over it and talks about it for an hour. "Daddy! NEE-NAH NEE-NAH! (apparently the sound of a foreign siren)"

He already had a pretty cool little ladder engine and now he has the firefighter figures but he needed something else… He needed a FIRESTATION! This is the result that a little inspiration, a cardboard box, a wooden dowel rod, a pot of paint, a few markers, some crayons, some ink jet mailing labels, and a few hours can achieve: purgatorio.com/gameroom/ec1

Since all of my "proper" hobby tools and bitz are packed up in storage *and* I don't have a proper work area, I've been going stir crazy for something creative to do. Thanks to the folks and the topic mentioned above, I was able to channel some of my pent up creative energy, grab some household items, and create something for my son that he absolutely loves.

Incidentally, the box I used was what the figures shipped in.

Looks great Dante.

Have you played with him yet with it?
Hope so; looks like great fun.

Thanks, Rabid.

Yeah, I haven't been able to go a day without playing with him and the firestation yet! It's great though. I try to find time at least twice a week to play some sort of game that uses the imagination with him. He's really been enjoying his firestation and is getting to the point in his development now where he can "make up" stories about the things he's playing with by talking in the toy's "voice" to my wife and me.

He's fascinated by my Dwarven Forge stuff and I let him handle a few pieces here and there but he's a bit young to handle my painted miniatures yet. I might look into some cheap D&D commons for him to play with within the next year or so.

My wife and I definitely understand the concern about one's children handling the painted minis.
We have had the opportunity to have to do the "No" routine as well when it comes to painted figures.
Children always seem fascinated by the very things which we wish they would not when it comes to the bright, shiny and colorful things in the home, but that is just being a child.

I'm not even sure I want my players touching my painted mini's sometimes!

"Please wipe the Cheetos off your fingers before moving the mini"

"Please don't reach into the group of minis with the uncapped Vis-A-Vis marker in the same hand"

etc...

No argument here Calico.
One just hopes that a gamer might be a little more careful.
Then again, if that gamer has no painted minis of their own and always uses someone else's, I probably would invite them to not touch as well.
They just would not have the experience and/or the feelings to understand and be careful enough.

I know what you mean. Jus last week a player grabbed a mini I had painted just days before, picked it up and casually slid it across the table after it had been killed. My mouth dropped in utter shock that people can be so careless with other peoples things.

Needless to say he got an earfull.

Worst thing I ever experienced was when I ran our fantasy home-brew RPG at a con in Michigan (when I still lived there) a few years back... a very unlucky player was playing a half-orc assassin endowed with the grace of a crippled, pregnant yak. This guy couldn't make his Dex roll if you painted his die with nothing but the number he needed to hit!

At any rate, after failing something like five rolls in a row, he got totally pissed and FLICKED my very well painted mini across the table and into the air. Thank GAWD for my martial arts training--I caught the mini mid-air and started to leap over the table to beat this guy to death before my buddy who was co-running the game with me grabbed me by the belt and stopped me. I was SO pissed that all I could say was, "Get..! Get the f*** out of here!" The other players were just totally disgusted with what he did and agreed that they would have helped stomp him into crumbs. ::breathing deeply:: Ahh... still boils my kettle! ::grin::

Luckily I don't have any true horror stories. I just have to give a polite reminder to the teenages in the group once in a while when they don't pay enough attention to what they're doing.

That's one thing about going to cons. I'm always deathly afraid of accidently hurting someone else's toys. I try to be so incredibly careful I almost don't want to touch.

Hey Dante cool. Just a thought here. If you got some of those plastic trees that we sometimes use for terrain, you could have them put out a forest fire and rescue some campers....?? Right now I am working on a track that some horses can race on for my daughter. Fun to make special toy/games for our little ones.

whitewind--those are both great ideas. I was looking at a "jungle set" the other day at the dollar store. They had some palm-type trees and a few other bits and bobs. I might go back up there and pick it up.

I'd like to see the race track you're working on. If you snap some pics to post that would be awesome.

I just finished making a "burning building" for Deacon to use with his fire station, ladder truck, and firemen. He takes this stuff to bed with him now! rofl... We have to pry his sleeping hands off of the boxes to tuck him in. hee hee....

Sure, I'd love to send a few picks and let you know the first horse to win. LOL. Wow, that means he is really enjoying it and loves it. I used some of the plastic horses from one of those world tube? sets??? It has a clear plastic square tube with a globe on top. They have all sorts of animals and critters in these things. I am thinking that the globe embeded in the blue square would make a nice prop for our Sci-Fi sets... I'll post a pic of that as well.
