Yup as i mentioned on the WWG page, i love all Sci-Fi terrain, and love to mix and match, some one over there was wonder what the walls bellow the ship was. I like the Paper stuff because you can easliy make a ship with it.. if you rummage through their Pictures thread/Gallery you'll see the PC's ship. Something almost impossible to do with DF, and have it portable, or not take up huge chuncks of your collection.

I got the Maiden of the High Seas from WWG, and there's a lot I like about it. But in the end, I kinda regretted the purchase just a bit.

Pros:

1. Easy to buy, at least. No muss, no fuss. And somewhat easy to customize -- you print what you want, at the size you want, etc.

2. Easy to replace. You own the files, you can always make another. So file this under "tough to damage" as well -- worst comes to worst, print another page.

3. Very well done overall. Good design, good details, good accessories. Just looked NEAT.

Cons:

1. As with Hirst Arts, more expensive than it seems at first. With HA, the cost of getting plaster, and paint, and so on -- it quickly adds up. It takes a long time before you've got a display that was actually as cheap as its fans like to say. Took me almost a year before my HA collection was actually cheaper than my DF collection -- for a long time, they were the same size and cost me the same amount. Eventually I cast enough that I had more HA for the same price -- but it took a long time.

With paper -- WOW, the cost of paper and especially ink is huge. That pirate ship seriously cost upwards of $100-150 in the end, with all the money I had to spend on cardstock and ink.

2. Storage. I have limited storage space -- another knock against HA, as its chief appeal seems to be "You can always make more!" But, well, no -- you can't. YOu run out of room. I like DF because I know I can set aside X amount of room and then have endless displays possible from that finite space I've set aside. With the Maiden, it took a HUGE amount of room to store, and for something paper instead of solid like the DF stuff -- it just didn't seem worth it. When I moved in April, I left the Maiden in the bathtub of the old apartment for the new residents to enjoy. (or, more accurately, the maintenance company to be perplexed by and throw out)

3. Accessories - While I loved the fact that the ship came with so many details and accessories -- crates, desks, chairs, barrels, etc. -- the fact is, most of them looked pretty lame next to the DF stuff I already had. When you have crates from DF already, the paper crates just don't compare, IMHO. That tainted me.

In the end, I really love the look of some of those paper models, but A) they aren't as cheap as they seem, cardstock and ink are expensive, and B) I just can't justify storing them when I'd rather save that space for more DF products and whatever HA stuff I can build.

I don't FULLY regret the Maiden -- I haven't deleted the files, and I may build her again one day when I have more space for her. It's pretty much impossible to get a pirate ship that big ANYWHERE, at ANY price -- but if you find one, it's DEFINITELY going to cost a lot, probably at least $250.

Still, I'd love it if my local gaming place had them on display, so I could game on them. They do look stunning -- and I REALLY love hte mini-movies on their website. Hands down the best sales idea ever -- played a huge role in getting me to buy the Maiden.

As I Stated I have not Yet Attempted a True 3D Paper Model for a Game Environment... Both Dunjinni and the E-Tiles are obviously 2D, so Storage is Not really an Issue... Though Even for those Ink and Paper are... But it is soo much easier to Pack up a Ship made of Paper Tiles then say a DF Sci-Fi Vessel... BUT... Oh man what a Difference Playing with 3D Terrain... And I Love the "Wow" Factor of stuff like DF for sure... And to be Honest my Investment in Paper 2D Maps has Been Under $400.00 Compared to the Probably $2200 Plus I Now Have in DF... (Not Counting the Two Preorders of DoE)... So it is definately a Balancing act... Of Course I have Always ultimately advocated Good Story Telling as the Most Important Part of my GMing but Man, what a Difference Kewl Props can make... :D

I totally agree that there are a number of "hidden" costs in the Paper stuff. Materials (Ink, and cardstock being the biggest), and Time. But some of the results cane be really, cool and well, i admit i get the fealing people who paint do out of the making a cardstock model, that sense of making something, i don't go to the point some painters do of thinking its art and should be treated as some great masterpiece but i do like the planning and building of the model, it;s kind of one of the things i enjoy about GMing, the deesign and construction of the adventure.
The Storage issues on the madien is one reason i never even bought the set. i made a hanger out of card stock that rocks, but is HUGE... it's in a closet now... only palce for it. But if you want some close to scale ships the WWG stuff is great, and it looks good.

And it is one of the few places you can get some of these items.
When DF:SF came out i was just getting into Cardstock modeling, and i have kept up with both becuase they are one of the FEW places you can get any sci-fi scenery/terrain. sure if you do a search for SCi-Fi terrain you'll get tons of hits, but searching through it almost all of it comes back to Wargaming, something i have no intrest in, even in the skirmishs i do with the SWminis i don't want a big bunker, or baracade, or half burned out building.

Most of the Sci Fi terrain is designed and geared towards wargames, which does seem to have a market if you look at the number of sites dedicated to it, as compared to fantasy wargames, and it shows. if you add a search requirment on of RPG or scenery you really only get sent to World Works, Ebbles, and Dwarven Forge. maybe some Armorcast and Anisty, but that's about it, it is rare to even get a Grendel hit to show up on a search, and Armor cast is out of production for alot of it's scenry elements. So we are down to Currently 4 companies that make sci-fi stuff that is not geared towards Wargames.

I'm doing my best to support all of them, becasue each has a role and serves a need for me, still want some niece scenery elements, but i have done a Few things to maybe deal with that. pics of that later.

Season 1: Episode 117: New Beginnings Part 1 (season finale)
Original Air Date: September 20, 2005
Credits
Starring Ashla, Ix, Guest Staring T6-M9, Capt. Molo, Marina, The Tall Man, Introducing The Faleen, and the Iotran

Ashla and Ix take the tide up captain back to the Dark Mystic, Ashla begins to question him on who Lorren is, and what is going on. Ix heads back to the Raider's Storm to see if he can get anything from the computer.
Captain Molo is rather cooperative, but seems dismissive of Ashla and the Jedi, saying that the Sith are here on a rescue mission to help the poor souls of Cerea, something the Sith have done while the Republic and Jedi wasted time. He professes how Lorren is working beyond the tower trying to save the sick of Cerea. Ashla doesn’t buy it, knowing Lorren is some how tied to what was going on at the Czerka slave pens, and the hunting on Trandosha. But Rozga was hired by To’mas, not Lorren, could this Sith Captain be speaking the truth, Lorren did have connections to the Trandoshans, they contacted him seeking aide when the Jedi Attacked, e, but does that prove he was helping him, or had the trandoshans lied to him like the lied to the Jedi, Lorren had a warehouse near the Czerka Compound, but could he have been there gathering samples to see if the Cerean and Wookiee plagues were similar? This would require further investigation.

As Ix worked on the computers Ashla moved into the closest Cantina in the Tower where a motley assortment of aliens had collected. Scanning the crowd she notices a Tall Man leaning against a booth, he seems to have a presence in the Force, and is observing the Crowd. There is also a Human female observing the crowd, in particular what appears to be a wealthy young female fallen, with her guard. After a bit of a conversation with the woman, Ashla observes her putting something into the drink the waitress is carrying over to the Fallen. Suspecting something foul is afoot she knocks the glasses from the tray with the force, and points it out to the Woman, somewhat spooked she leaves.

The Tall Man in the corner is observed to be chuckling to himself over the incident and After Ashla talks to him all he will reveal is he is looking for something. He departs the cantina as well, soon after the Fallen and her companion leave as well, then Ashla.

Meanwhile in the Hanger bay, Ix has diligently been working away on secure files, and discovers something in the Records, Lorren has just recently taken possession of this ship, while it is currently under his command, it was not his ship, it is a general transport of the Sith, a group of corridents seem familiar somehow, as he reaches for his com link to report in a shadow falls over the bulk head entryway, and the distinctive snap hiss of a light saber igniting is heard, He turns bathed in red light, as he ignites his own blade, and parries a lunge by the Red saber.

Back in the hallway leading from the cantina the Faleen and the Iotran come around a corner to see the woman from the Cantina, she has a blaster out, and pointed at the pair, the Iotran looks over his shoulder as out of the shadows step a few thugs, and they are boxed in.

A few passages further down the corridor, Ashla encounters a group of armed thugs, blasters are loaded and they order her back into the cantina…
