TOPIC: Mimics!

Mimics! 6 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I just painted these old Ral Partha mimics. Love these sculpts! Now I'll have to paint the rest of the matching furniture that I recently bought from Iron Wind Metals, who now own the molds.

For the base of the chest mimic, I used Pokornoy paints.

Wonderful paint job. Can you tell us where you got what looks like acrylic transparent bases?

Thanks for all the kind comments! The 40mm round transparent bases are from Litko Aerosystems. They make all kinds of cool tokens for gaming as well, like flying base stands, invisible player characters and monsters, and flame tokens.

As for painting techniques, I readily admit that I'm a long ways from Bohun. That guy is amazing! My best was being a Golden Demon finalist at the first Games Day in Los Angeles. Looking at the minis, I see that the bar keeps being raised higher.

I usually start with a medium base coat, then shade down with thinned down paint or washes (I've lately been using Secret Weapon Washes), creating deeper shadows. Then I highlight up, and finally work some glazes to smooth out the transitions. I need to work more on wet blending, which is essential for smoother gradients on large surfaces like cloaks.

I've always disliked it when someone paints an excellent monster miniature, then gets lazy and paints the teeth stark white. Monster teeth should look a bit dingy and stained. I usually start with something like Reaper Earth Brown, then work up to Leather Brown, and start highlighting with Creamy Ivory. The final highlight I use a mix of Creamy Ivory and Linen White.

If you want to learn to be a better painter, I recommend two things. First, find out what the great painters do. Jennifer Haley has some excellent tutorials on DVD, and James Wappel's website is chock full of great tips on painting. You may not become their equal, but you'll definitely improve. Second, paint! Put theory to practice, and paint on minis. Don't get discouraged if you're not a painting god overnight. Just be patient, take your time, and work on minis that you enjoy.

If you don't like something that you've done, you can paint over it. If it's really bad, dunk it in Simple Green to strip it and start over. Deeper shadows and brighter highlights will help to create the illusion of greater depth and detail on your minis. Find something to listen to while painting. Lately I've been listening to the old radio show, Box 13 with Alan Ladd, on YouTube. The main thing is, paint and have fun!

It's so good that it looks like it is from a high class comic.

Well done!
