...tonight!

Oh, you saw it coming. There was no little paperclip icon indicating attachments. (Well, if you aren't noticing this until tonight, there WAS a paperclip icon, and you're pretty much skipping this and moving down to the purty pictures below....)

I grabbed one of each of the new McFarlane dragons (well, two of the blue one) They aren't action figures at all, but they are just about perfect for minis. They are 10 times more detailed and well-painted than the official WOTC minis, and at $11 it's a LOT cheaper to pick them up than the Huge Dragons from WOTC. For that matter, at $11 they are better than most dragons out there, for painting. I'm sure I'll pick up another set and prime them all black, then repaint them. One bronze, one silver, one black, I think, to start with. These are fantastic for minis gaming.

So -- look for pics of them in my new DF cavernous lair tonight! These guys are great.

I am looking forward to seeing them... Now these are the New dragons as I understand it, and they look very Kewl from the Pics I've seen, but they are really only going to be useful as Unique Dragons right? No Standard Metalics or Chromatics right? So my Question is, (And I did not find any when I did a Brief Search), is there a Previous range of McFarlane Dragons?

The basic details are available at the Spawn pages (www.spawn.com) but here are some relevant details for minis gamers.

The dragons are a bit big, as you can see, but the only one that is probably TOO large is the red one (Sorcerer's Clan) That one would work for an aspect of Tiamat (she doesn't always have to have the five heads, I suppose....) but even for a collosal dragon, it's big.

The white one (Fire Clan), blue one (Komodo) and pearlish one (Water Clan) are all great, though, for very large dragons. The Water dragon is only slightly larger than Marthrangul, for example -- I may post comparison pics eventually.

They appear to make GREAT bases for other dragons -- prime them and paint them and you can make just about anything. The GW wings I have look to be too small to replace the Fire Clan wings as I'd originally hoped to do, however. Still, these guys make very effective massive wyrms to make PCs wet themselves....

Oh, and there's also the Eternal Clan one, the green one with a rider. That one is perched on a tower, making it difficult to A) use with DF, B) use anywhere but on a tower. The rider could be removed, and replaced with just about any rider mini (though you'd probably need some skills as a converter)

I'd say for minis gaming, the best two are the Water Clan and Komodo. They make great bases for repaints, and the poses and size work well for this scale. The Fire Clan and Sorcerer Clan dragons are just slightly too big, though like I said they'd work for something MEANT to be grotesquely oversized.

Oh, and to answer the questions:

1. As you can see, these are certainly not "official" WOTC dragons. They are, however, close. The Komodo makes a good Blue, the Sorcerer works for Red, the Eternal is Green, and the Fire is White. The water could be green OR blue, I suppose, but is so aquatic it doesn't work as a chromatic as well as the others.

Of course, that includes all the warnings above about size etc.

And, as I'm sure you have noticed, some are actually wyverns. The Eternal is DEFINITELY a wyvern, and the Fire Clan is almost -- he has clearly defined forearms, but at the same time his wings are attached to them. Tough call, but I'd say he's a wyvern. The others are dragons.

2. There was a dragon for the Ultima Online videogame, released a few years ago. There was also a beast called The Horrid as part of the first Dark Ages Spawn line, around 1997. Google Spawn and the Horrid and you can probably find good pics. The Horrid was dragon-like.

That said, these guys are the first real DRAGONS that McF has made. They still show a little flair and creativity (maybe too much for some people) and don't quite fit the official mold, but they work wonderfully IMHO.

I'm hoping to scrape some of the more fish-like fins off the Water Clan dragon, and repaint him, maybe as a bronze. I'm also considering turning the Eternal Clan one into a silver.

Oh these puppies are out, i went looking for them a few weeks ago, but did not see them, while i hate McToys as "action figures" they do make some nice "statues", which can work great for minis etc. but these puppies are definatly in the Collasal range.. but since we are now 17th level eheheheh...

oh an i took pictures of my first caverns set up... but i don't have my jump drive on me...

Yup, I looked it up in my Draconomicon -- the largest dragons can be 86 feet long, these guys are between 6-14 inches, which works out to 60-86 feet.

The Water Clan one has a fantastic "Just try it....my pet...." pose. And the Komodo is a great battle pose. The Sorcerer definitely has a titanic feel to it. The only one that is a bit awkward is the Fire Clan, the white one.

Here are some more pics....

wait, huhm maybe not ... without haveing seen one is that 6-14 from tip to tip, ie nose to tail... becuase if so they may not be Collossal...
They taked about it in 3.0, but they have seemd to leave it ot as a specific statment in 3.5, but if you look in the Drac.
on 59, Overall space is Large 10, Huge is 15 feet, Gar 20, Col 30.
The Total Body length way more, a few examples
the Garg black (pg 37) has an over all of 85 (17 inchs), but a body lenght of 25ft or 5 inchs, within the Gar range of size on "torso.
Blue 28, over all 85 ft. for Gar, 55 and 20 for Huge.
Brass 55 and 21 for Huge, and 85 29 for Gar.

Remember that a creatures length is not tip to tip, but takes up the bulk of the body, the "torso" ignoring neck and tail, most of the expanded dragons in th drac show this well, the space they take up is based on the "body" not over all.
They talked about this in 3.0, but i can't find it in 3.5... So measure that section, while some are yeah freaking going to be Col, i think some will be Huge, and Gar by their lenght. (why the Red Huge is "rampant" like to fight it on the base. These puppies if based show why Dragons have such Great Reach and with all of the different body parts....

I had been thinking about ordering these dragons. After seeing these pictures last night, I took the plunge. By the way, it seems to me like at least most of them would be "Gargantuan" size in D&D 3.5.
