Disturbed Peace of Holy Crypt 1 Year, 4 Months ago
I was asked to run a game after being out of DMing for quite a while... I'm still a 2, 2.5, 3 version D&D Guy.

The Mission is for a party of 7 1-3rd level characters.(Due to those being what showed up).
4 Clerics 1-1st, 2-2nd 1-3rd
2 Paladins 1-2nd, 1-3rd
1 Magic-user 3-rd
(Just about the most unbalanced party ever.)

The crypt being the burial place of the honored dead esteemed members from the church years past. It is located under the temple vaults and a recent mass of undead slaughter'd those that could not flee the church and local town. The attack happened in the middle of the night with no moonlight little was seen but most of the children could not be found and their bodies missing.

A plea for help was posted as far as the town could reach in every direction.
The only help to arrive were fighting members from local church's several days away....Oh ... and a Magic User drafted by the local jailer for drunk and indecent exposure.

The party has too consecrate each Tomb withing the crypt by prayer and holy water and remove the evil dead that are now surely there.

The party can not touch the Eire Green Fire Pits that use to be natural fire. If they touch them each tomb will release 1-4 skeletons each turn touched.
The Tomb in the center of the Fire Pits has a Silver parchment like image script written on it's upper surface that can not be harmed by anything except an Erase Spell. If the Script is Erased the Fire Pits can be touched and not create more undead.
The Lid of the center crypt can be lifted after a Knock Spell is cast on it and all the crypts have been cleansed with Prayer and Holy Water. The towns children are in a chamber under the center crypt.
There is a Treasure Type G and 3 Treasure Type T's in the Vault the Children were in. All magic items should be adjusted to 1-3rd level characters.

It should be fun to see how the party deals with something so simple as being swamped with low level undead.

It should be equally fun to see how rusty my DMing is.

A simple yet interesting scenario. It looks like an excellent and fun small dungeon.

If you are open to a little input, do you have any plans for a modification in case things go a little too smoothly for our heroes? Perhaps a couple evil cultists to back up the skeles if the encounter is a little too easy for them? I suggest this since in my own experience I often find that a group tends to have at least a few creative ideas that I hadn't considered that make their efforts more effective. As a result I like to have a couple possible additions ready to modify the difficulty on the fly.

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...

Hey Dust,

Always happy to have input especially small things that ad flavor.

I think the 4 clerics will have their hands full as every time the fire pits are triggered on average 25 skeletons will spawn from the crypts.... I might remove one skeleton per turn of trigger and ad back a ghoul or something to increase difficulty maybe even adding a portion of more difficult undead as things go on.

It is imperative that the clerics bless and anoint each crypt as fast as possible to reduce spawn points. Kind of hard to do until enemy are reduced in numbers. The 2 fighters (Palley's) have to keep the single magic user alive.

The fun starts when the characters have to figure out why the undead are spawning as I will randomize when they show up several rounds after the fire pits are touched.

Whats so funny to me is most parties I've run over the last 34 years were either pretty balanced leaning toward fighter classes or magic users but this is almost silly as to nearly all cleric related members. Last week I had an hour long chat with several of the players about the merits of lower level Mage spells that I rarely see in use Knock and Erase were a couple minor spells discussed at different times with little interest.

Ah-ha! I missed that the skeles were spawning from EACH crypt! That will up the challenge quite a bit more. Varying the spawn time by a few rounds will add to the confusion and should make things interesting. I wonder if it will occur to your pally players that since healing damages undead they can "lay on hands" to zot a few? I've only ever had one paladin player use that particular trick.

Will this be the start of a campaign, a one shot, or just a test run to see if everyone wants to go further?

We had one campaign that erase featured prominently in. It was focused highly on political intrigue, so making documents disappear without tell-tale smoke and flame was actually pretty key. Most groups seem to prefer more hack-and-slash with a light to heavy dash of roleplaying on top, but I really enjoy having a fun theme like politics, sea-faring, extreme survivalism, etc. running through a campaign.

Hey Dust,

Yes as to the crypts each spawning a portion of the Skelly's.... I would laugh my rear end off to see 10-40 Skelly's spawn from a single location.....would be similar to an old time Keystone cops Episode.

D4 Spawn for each Crypt per occurrence spreads out the threat so as to create opportunities and hazards.

I figure D3 rounds after contact with the Evil Fire Pits should add a layer of confusion for the players to figure out. It kind of makes sense because even Bones need time to wake up and stretch those tired .....BONES!

I have played 2 Paladins in my years of play and I have to say that if played right can be a blast if a bit of an impairment to the teams chaotic-lawless ways. My favorite Pally was always on the search for high quality soap so as to stay clean and always had a large gold piece that he rubbed against his armor so as to turn the armor golden in color. Once when a party was preparing an assault against a thieves warehouse the Pally disappeared and marched up to the front door demanding the enemy ask forgiveness and repent....So fun.

I have used the 'Lay Hands' on undead and vaporized Vampires before....huge surprise to unknowing DM's....Scene changer....LOL 2 points per level adds up fast at higher levels. I have also allowed a pally that has the Favor of his God(s)to cause damage to Wights, Wraths and Specters as a first contact attack beating level drain effects.... the key is Favor of their God.... most Pally's Ive watched played are just nicer Fighters.... A Pally should be Flamboyant for their beliefs.

This adventure is intended to stand on its own but if the players and I have a good time it could become an on going adventure.

In my experience you are often right, not very many folks really play a pally to full potential. Even if they play a wiser, older, paladin it is nice to see someone take the role seriously rather than play it like a fighter with a a few clerical sprinkles on top.

Let us know how the session goes, I will be rooting for you!

Suggestion, it's not a huge room, spawning 3x would be 75 skeletons - wouldn't that fill the room really quickly - and do you have that many skeletons?

What about a randomizer? With 10 crypts:

1-3. 10 skeletons
4-5. 5 zombies
6. 4 burning skeletons, 1 from each fire pit

Another suggestion I would make is any time positive charges are used near the fire, the fire rages, this could just be an effect and do nothing OR do something like burn the source of the positive charge.

Re:Disturbed Peace of Holy Crypt 1 Year, 4 Months ago
Agreed Dust.... in Total.

Hey Crawler... thanks for input.

The Contact with the Green Fire Pits can only happen every Turn (10 Rounds per Turn).... There are 4 priests so if each one can prayer/bless/anoint one crypt per turn the # of spawning Crypts will reduce rapidly ..... even if they only achieve reduction of 2 Crypts per turn it knocks down the #'s quickly.

One of the tings I have found watching parties over the years is that players are given a mission and want to "Do Their Own Thing" not following the mission briefings. I have also noticed DM's having to change the mission and or fabricate a new series of solutions on the fly. I intend to run this one 'old school' which I am sure will cause the players problems just from the standpoint that teamwork is an art and a privilege.

Mission:
Enter the Crypt, Identify Enemy.
Discover what the source of the enemy is.
Destroy Source(s)
Find Children and free them.

The players will be broken into 2-3 groups and each group read a series of directions one time so it is important they listen so as to be able to collaborate with each other.

A Point on the Spawn Points... There are 10 Crypts that can Spawn.... Each time one is destroyed (prayer/blessed/anointed) it no longer Spawns.

If the party is lucky and doesn't touch everything it can reduce 4 spawn points and D4 x 4 Skelly's in the first Turn...... like they wont touch everything.....insert evil laugh.............

PS.....Crawler I have several hundred Skelly's painted as well as endless other undead to draw from.

Hey J,

Thanks for the complement on the Fire Pits.... The Green are very Eire.
Like the other Fire Pits They look way better in person.

J... I would have expected feedback on the scenario... Game is this Friday Night and I still feel its in need of a few minor extra bits to add flavor.

I am leaning on a slightly more varied Spawn list like Dungeoncrawler suggested. maybe on the first activation just skellys, second time any 4 rolled generates zombies?

One of my buddies suggested having d3 per crypt creatures in the Crypt as they enter....The Raiding Party that are still activated.

A few more bits will fill in the adventure.

Thanks All!

Yay!

Do you mean having a previously activated spawning skeletons that have been locked in the chamber or a group of previous explorers that are now undead locked in the chamber?

Aside: is you're signature a giant picture, or do you keep posting that image?

Hey Crawler,

I'm thinking the undead raiders returned to the Crypts and some went to rest leaving a single spawning's worth to guard the chamber.

My Orc and Cube picture is something of a signature when I don't have other stuff to post.
