I was reading through the “Make your own set contest thread and liked the picture and idea posted by Transit

I think I'd like to see a crypt/catacombs set. Hallways, intersections and corners that look like they were tunneled through stone, with mysterious ledges, nooks and crannies. Various urns and other containers in some of the openings. Crumbling frescoes with mysterious images.

I did a quick web search for "catacombs" and came up with a picture that illustrates my idea.

If designed correctly, this set could be used with both the fantasy and sci fi lines - it would just depend on if the nooks and crannies contain undead skeletons and magical items, or alien eggs and lost technology.

The set would also be useful for people running Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider/Stargate type games. Also Gothic Horror/Vampire games.

It reminded me of a set sold by Manor House in Italy a bit pricy, but all the models by these guys are top notch.

So I started thinking of trying to recreate a crypt type feel with the DF pieces, and well the idea went more Egyptian as it came together. But take a look at the use of the caved in passage pieces in reverse used in conjunction with normal passage pieces; as to assume the contents (in this case skeletons, have spilled out of these crypts).

The Egyptian stuff is Armor Cast except for the tan columns like the ones at the double door entrance which are pieces of the Mage Knight Castle. The rest building pieces are DF. The whole thing took about 3 fun filled hours to build.

It's remarkably stable (I gave the table an earthquake shake), but now I know how the Medieval Cathedral builders felt. These DF pieces are stacked 4 high. If I go any higher DF will have to come out with a “Flying Buttress Set for support.

Anyway here’s the pics.

Yep, that's exactly the kind of thing I was talking about.

Now if you could just go ahead and crate up that whole layout and ship it to me. Thanks.

Seriously, excellent job!

Thee coolest setup ever! My players love running off and exploring egyptian type ruins. Why DF decided to go with a gothic set rather than something like this is beyond me!? They had some cool dioramas at Gen Con I snapped some pictures of, I'll see if I can dig them up and post them.

By the way, for all of your guys who are making these awesome sets with 3 or 4 high stacked sets, can you show us some good pics of how you stack them? That is the secret and we'd like to know! Share with us your divine knowledge! :)

Very nice setup IO!

I like DMMJ's idea. It would be cool to see a somewhat step by step approach to how some of these amazing set ups are built.

IO,

Nice work... (Again...<Chuckle>...), I Like that use of the MK Castle Butress pieces, AND of Course you have a lot of other great stuff there to work with... Kudos...

I Looked at the Italian site, and Particularly liked their "Bags-O-Goodies" there are some very Kewl Ruined Pillars, and Just Plain old "Chunks" of Ruin kinds of things... Their Crypt Sets look great too...
