Sewer setup - final 1 Year, 2 Months ago
OK, this is my last attempt. There are definitely other things I could have done to improve this -- like make it much, much bigger. I really need more room to incorporate all the stuff I'd want to do, just to have longer stretches of water without some new architectural flourish showing up. As it is, I've got bridges right next to gates and so on.

Free-standing walls would make this a LOT easier. I wanted areas where the river was in a "tunnel" surrounded by walls on either side, but without having to build a whole room on the other side just to achieve that effect. Without free-standing walls, though, that's impossible. So I tried to create that impact, but it's not the same.

There are a lot of similar shots here of the various ways I improvised "gates" and so on. I thought people might like to see the various ways you can use existing DF to approximate free-standing walls for the purposes of having some kind of barrier on the water itself (other than just placing wall pieces directly on the water -- which, yeah, you can do that, too. ;)

Enjoy!

Last ones... By this point I really was just experimenting with gates. ;)

Great pictures - thanks for posting!

FWIW I particularly liked the use of the two-high stacks of pedestals to make walls on either side of the portcullis.

My hat is off too you sir. Another great sewer set up that makes me want to grab some dice and jump right in. :)

Also, I am a fan on the stair pieces being used as the base for the wall sections flanking the gate. Its' a good sturdy look.

FREE-STANDING WALLS! Sorry, I just had to get that out. In fact, I'm gonna change my Avatar signature to that phrase hahaha!

Awesome set up! I'm not sure I would include the Ogre's Den but I guess someone has to run that sewer system, right? I LOVE the portcullis/stair/pedestal combo you use. And using the whirlpool to indicate something much BIGGER is underneath that tentacle was a masterful touch!

HAhahaha, and you DID change your avatar sig to that!

To be honest, I wouldn't have included the Ogre's den myself, but it allowed me to cheat -- it has its own walls! I used just about every regular dungeon piece I own, and that means I didn't have enough walls to close out the rooms without the Ogre's Den giving me some extras. I used that trick when I was first getting DF, and I'm returning to it now.

Of course, I could have some other pieces buried in storage somewhere, and probably do, but this is what I could find. Eventually I'll have more and I'll be able to revisit this idea. The dungeon and river elements can make a pretty awesome sewer set, I think, but you need a LOT of them, and a lot of room, to really do it RIGHT.

Nice and clever arrangement Law. I wonder how well this arrangement will work with the upcoming Sewer Set. I personally don't have (yet?) the Advanced builder Set II but it contains small free-standing walls that could have been used to flank the portcullis.
