Shadox, Arcarius2001 and Feymous, Thanks!

Now, this is a new library I made with the same Thomarillion bookshelves. I believe it is more classical (and "less evil") to the fantasy RPG genre: a whole floor from a wizard tower full of busy magicians!

The first library was cool but the second one is more my style!! The observatory section is particularly awesome.

I move into a new house the end of this month and I've reserved space in it for a painting/ model shop. As soon as I move in I'm placing an order of those bookcases to work on :-)

Bob/richens,

I paint using Vallejo's Model Color range. This paint is perhaps for the most advanced users... I was describing in this thread my fancy method of painting but I would suggest that you should start to paint with the basics: GW/Citadel and/or Reaper paints.

jasdotcom,

I was admiring Thomarillion's products for a long time before I actually bought anything from them. When I finally decided to jump in, I made sure to buy a lot (more than 300 Euros) to work out some kind of wholesale rebate with the nice owner. Make sure to contact him too if you make a very big order. The good thing is that the prices on the site include the VAT tax, that us Canadians and Americans do not have to pay. But then, there are shipping fees...

Don't take this wrong Biowizard, but I liked the first library better. Now both are wonderful, and I envy the number of shelves you own. But for some reason the first design captured my imagination more. Not real sure why though.

Either way, great collection.

Seeing how nicely the various bookshelves dress a room, and reading how much work goes into painting them, I have to wonder if prepainted library pieces are something that DF should produce.

I'm thinking of a straight wall with shelves and a corner with shelves, two pieces that might go in a Wicked Additions set. If there were variants of these two pieces, and a diagonal wall with shelves and maybe even free-standing shelves (full height and half height) it would probably go better as a Library Set.

Or is the painting too complex for the factory to do at a reasonable cost?

Great work! I will be stealing some of your layout with my final build in my adventure. I will need a research room for my evil lich!

jasdotcom and dafrca, to each his own! I personally prefer the one with the illithid (I wish I had more good-looking Mind Flayers minis) but the wizard character I play would loose himself in that second one! ;-)

jackattack, you know of course that a lot of us have been asking DF for years to make a Library Set. I would personally prefer them not to be part of walls so that we could put them in different environments as I did. Also, they could be designed to occupy the half-squares alongside walls to re-establish a perfect and complete grid pattern.

Bookshelves have already been made as part of the secret passage of MBS:

Of course, the Thomarillion bookshelves are bigger which makes them easier to paint and Stefan could sculpt something much more beautiful and elaborate than what he did here but I think it really shows what are the limitations of painting items being mass-produced while keeping costs low. I can understand why Stefan has not done a Library Set yet, DF customers would be obviously disappointed when seeing dry brushed little books with very little variations in colors as compared to those painted by crazy Herald, feymous, shadox, VladTaltos, Solo, Rodenbach and mine (I'm sorry if I forget anyone). This sadly reminds me when Stefan had to give up on having his beautiful and intricate mosaic floor tiles from ROTA being painted in multiple colors and instead have them dry brushed white at production stage.

I know, of course.

I don't think customers would be disappointed to own DF pieces that they don't have to paint, especially as many customers buy DF because they do not want to paint their own pieces (whether due to lack of time, skill, or interest). And there is no reason that a customer who buys any DF item cannot add details or other modifications if they wish.

For example, as nice as the custom repaints of the RotA intersections are, I am not in the slightest disappointed with the standard intersection piece as is. And seeing your (or anyone else's) custom painted bookshelf next to the MBS bookshelf does not make me disappointed with the DF piece. I am duly impressed with the artistry of the custom painted pieces, and if they were available commercially (fully painted) I might consider buying some, but they aren't, so they really don't factor into my satisfaction with what I buy from DF.
