Xak Tsaroth -- the final version 1 Year, 1 Month ago
So, I have been struggling with creating something inspired by one of my favorite dungeons -- Xak Tsaroth, the sunken city of Dragonlance DL1 Dragons of Despair. The story goes that this ancient cosmopolitan urban center was swallowed up by the swamp when the great Cataclysm hit, with remnants of the city ruins strewn about the sides of the pit, the bulk of the city resting at the bottom.

It was not easy to figure out how to translate this with ROTA and cavern sets, but I finally did it.

First, the runner-up. I decided that the problem with my first attempts was that they were too random. ROTA and cavern pieces were strewn about without rhyme or reason, which I did deliberately, hoping to evoke a chaotic environment. But sometimes "chaotic" is just "messy and indeterminate." This time, I tried bringing the ROTA elements mostly to the center, to create a single sloped city at the center of a large cavernous pit. Is it entirely the same thing? No. I resisted this at first because I was afraid that it would look too much like a completely whole city in the middle of a cavern. But it doesn't look that way -- and the alternative didn't look like ANYTHING. So -- here is the first runner-up for my final design.

And, yes, I did include the out-of-production ROTA entrance that was originally offered when the sets first came out.

And now -- the version I like most. The one with water. Really, it should have been obvious to me: everything is cooler with water. I remember pestering Stefan YEARS ago, after he'd made a casual reference to some modular underwater lake ideas. I would send email after email asking when we'd see them. They just make everything cooler. But, what can I say, I liked the idea of a big plaza at the bottom of the pit, and even though the original Xak Tsaroth does in fact have a river running through it's grand plaza -- somehow I missed that. I wasn't sure it would work, I was afraid the river would dominate and you'd lose the sense of the bulk of the city being at the bottom of the pit.

And hey, maybe you do, but it still looks much better to me.

I also got a lot of use out of that OOP entrance. I normally don't use it, because as gorgeous as it is, it isn't modular, and I really love the modularity of DF. Take that out, and no matter how beautifully sculpted something is, I won't use it as often. But this layout was CRYING for it, so I took some pics. It does work very well at the top of the pit, as a suggestion that buried deep in the jungle (or swamp, ahem) there are these ruins, and you go through a grand entrance and almost immediately the ground drops away at you're at the edge of a huge pit. Descend with caution....

I really like the juxtaposition of the cavernous rivers with just about anything -- they look awesome in caverns, they look great surrounding the woodland set, they look great running by ROTA. Next time I'll have to place them in a basic dungeon. (and yes, I am one of many fans who really want a sewer set!)

I love the "flooded" look of the ROTA room under the cave right up against the water's edge...

Last two pics -- there are, of course, dragonmen down here! Also a black dragon, but those pics were boring. It was just a very little black dragon...

A perfectly put together and well thought through setup!
This approach really rocks! Especially with the lake pieces. It's just as you said it, really everything is better with water. It just always adds so much to flair to a setup. And it fits the theme here perfectly.
I never would have guessed how well the lake pieces would go with the RotA stuff. That is really great. The shots with the RotA walls, the ruined RotA pieces and the water are so atmospheric, absolutely awesome! And the floor pieces from the Woodland set make a good transition towards cavern chasm pieces.

Dragonlance...that evokes fond memories. I became interested in D&D because of Dragonlance. Memories, memories... :)

Do you know how many Chasm and RotA sets you used for this setup?

Thanks!

Hard to say how many sets I used -- enough of the small ROTA room for three sets, definitely, and probably enough regular pieces for that as well. Some ROTA pieces were useful to support the upper levels. So three is a good minimum guess.

I'd say three chasm sets, as well -- I went through a lot of the curved floor chasm piece.

This is very cool and inspiring Law. Well done! I really like seeing how the different sets combine together in the sunken city. I may have to steal that idea and style once I have enough pieces of my own. Thank you for sharing.

Amazing as usual. My geek heart *aches* knowing I have no water sets yet.
