Expedition to the wooded isle 1 Year, 2 Months ago
So I took out my lake and lake expansion sets (though, as you'll see, I didn't take out quite the right number of expansion pieces -- there's a bit of a cheat in the water...) and I made a proper island out of the woodland set.

It works pretty awesomely, I have to say. The color contrast between the blue and teal in the water pieces and the green in the woodland pieces is really striking, and it makes for a beautiful island. It looks like a colorful map.

I decided this was the island on which a magical fountain could be discovered, source of some unique properties required by some magi. And so on. And of course, there are elves there.

You'll notice the somewhat frustrating shortcoming of the woodland set makes an appearance here. It lines up poorly enough that the surrounding water pieces won't fit together at all. There's a somewhat large gap between two of the lake pieces on the "north" side of the island. I covered them up by just dropping two woodland floor pieces over the gap, and it's a fine, if clumsy, solution. But it's a shame that set doesn't really work in this respect, especially when you see how beautiful it can be.

Very attractive pairing of sets. And great choice of minis to showcase them!

Law,
Have you had problems with all Woodland sets aligning properly?

That is really awesome, great presentation. My only hope is that DF uses kickstarter for each of their unique sets...

A setup with all-Woodland set pieces is going to be less troublesome in its own way, because the pieces are consistent. There are small gaps here and there, but it's much worse (sadly) when you combine it with other sets. The WS pieces are just slightly larger than normal DF pieces, so the more you put together, the greater the cumulative discrepancy -- eventually you end up with a really noticeable overlap that just can't be ignored. It's a real shame. When you use only WS pieces, that doesn't happen as much, but you do get gaps. Mostly they show up in the floor pieces -- you line up all the wall pieces with everything touching and you'll be okay, but then when you place the floors, they don't need as much room as the walls and there are little gaps. But you can evenly distribute very minor gaps so you don't end up with one much larger one.

I sure like the use of mixed sets in use and sure want to see more and more close up photos of such. I have noticed quite a bit of alignment problems with different sets.... sometimes even with the same set.

Thanks for posting Law, you are always on my first view list.

The Woodland Set gets even better and better with every post from you, Law. Great setup!

It's too bad the pieces don't align perfectly but you really made the best of it. Thank you for sharing! :)
