Return to the Realm of the Ancients.... 1 Year, 2 Months ago
I've been so excited about the Catacombs set recently, and I stand by what I said -- it really is one of the best DF sets ever.

BUT. Everyone has their own personal preferences, and I have to admit: I think Realm of the Ancients may be my own favorite DF setting. There's just something about it. The color scheme, the sun frescos, the ruined pieces, the white stairs, the little bronze sun secret door. It's just amazing. And, of course, that painted mosaic on the one-time-only corridor piece. I still hope DF brings painted versions of those out as individual offerings -- I'd buy 'em, every one!

Anyhoo -- here are some shots from a few crypts I put together. Romans v. Egyptians -- GO!

Wow Law, you are an amazing painter. Who made those mummies? GW tomb kings?

Really good compact neat design and layout. Wonderfully populated.
I have to admit it is very good. The Realm of the Ancients was the first set that made me extend my collection off from the standard 'Cavern' and 'Dungeon' sets.

Very nice set up. The figures also go well with the setup. Great work.

Thanks for the kind words, guys!

To answer some questions -- sadly, I'm afraid I can't give very good answers, it's just been too long.

I think there are components from 3 ROTA sets here, plus the expansion. It's actually a comparatively small number of pieces, but I believe the regular set comes with two of those little mini-chambers with the removable walls, and I used five here. One is the out-of-print exclusive with the specialty painted floor, so I guess technically it's two sets plus that exclusive. (of course, I believe you had to buy three sets to GET that piece, so...)

The minis are a mix of pieces -- definitely some GW Tomb Kings, but also some Reaper figures and I think also some Crocodile Games pieces as well.

Nicely done! It even has a hint of historical precedent to the concept. Thanks for sharing your setup!

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...

I am not a big fan of the Egyptian theme but this is amazing looking and would get me interested in a campaign of that type:) I passed on buying the Ancient Treasure set because of this. Hoping they come back with something similar to the treasure and magic item set.

It's funny, I'm not actually a huge fan of the Egytptian theme, either -- I just ended up with a lot of mummies because, hey, I had the ROTA sets. But what I really like about the ROTA sets are the Roman and Greek influences -- the sun fresco, the white stairs, and so on. I would love to see more of that. And I agree about the Egyptian treasure set. I passed on it for the longest time, only picked it up recently as part of my kickstarter-induced "I really need some new DF" binge. (I've said it before, but it bears repeating: I think the KS was just ever so SLIGHTLY a missed opportunity, to the extent that so little was in stock when the KS was going on -- it would make sense that people who have just been psyched-up about upcoming products that won't be out for six months might have some interest in buying what IS available, but sadly, almost nothing was!)

But, yeah, I'd love to see more traditional treasure items show up -- a magic staff, a stack of books, a new shield, a crystal ball on a stand, a goblet, a new chest... lots of possibilities.
