EDIT: I deleted these pics to make room for new stuff, sorry....

So I found a place selling the giant Reaper dragon Marthrangul for $50 instead of the usual $80-100. I was a little wary of spending so much, but the discount made it irresistable. Plus, I've always wanted one of these huge dragons.

So -- now I have to decide which color to paint him. I've always been a fan of the five basic D&D chromatic dragons: white, black, red, blue, and green. I'm not really considering alternatives.

Black seems like it would swallow up a lot of detail, and white is too hard to GET detail, at least for me. Blue seems like it would possibly too cartoonish.

So that leaves red and green -- the two classics. Which should I go for? Red is impressive, and given the SIZE of the beastie, tempting. Green, however, would really highlight the scales well, and could be a great classic fairytale dragon.

Thoughts?

Here's another vote for making it red.

Red is old school and any time I think of a dragon I think "Red". A friend of mine has one of the smaller Reaper dragons and painted it blue and it does look kind of cartoony. White could look pretty good, maybe doing a gray wash might bring out some of the detail? (I'd hate to experiment on a $50 figure, though)

I'm going to say red, because the model looks more like a D&D 3.x Red Dragon than anything else.

Can't wait to see it finished and running through a DF cavern. :)

Well, it looks like red is going to be the winner! In some ways, I was leaning towards red myself. I think I originally wanted a red version of this guy (check out CMON, at www.coolminiornot.com, and search for Marthrangul, or maybe it was misspelled Mathrangul, but in any case, there are some pics of him in red there that really make it look fantastic)

I liked the idea of green because that's a little easier to paint -- the scales look a little sharper, I think, sometimes, when you do green. But red, you gotta go with red. Big honkin' dragon, what else is it going to be? Red it is!

Of course, I can't prime this guy until the 5 feet of snow on my balcony is at least a tiny bit melted. So this may be awhile....

My wife bought me two Reaper dragons for stocking stuffers at Christmas (dragon of fire and the shadow dragon). I painted one red and the other green, and now that they're done I'm much happier with the green one. It really stands out when in play, and is much more striking than the red dragon.

I painted them both with a darker base coat (a brownish, mossy green for the green dragon) and dry brushed them with brighter and brighter colors (eventually livery green which is nearly fluorescent for the green dragon). The green dragon was actually easier to paint, and has much more depth and texture to it than the red dragon.

So basically, I vote green! :D
