Thar She Blows, Sea Tower & Dock 1 Year, 5 Months ago
Hello again all, it has been a long time. I used to be here under the ID of London Dungeoneer, but due to ludicrous work hours, this dropped off my radar for quite a while but I am back under a new ID. (Mods, by all means delete London Dungeoneer if it`s still on the system as I can`t even remember the password or e-mail I was using at the time).

I`m really looking forward to getting back into gaming now that I have more time, and will share some stuff here of course. I have not been idle with picking up scenery though, and now that I`m catching up with a few extra Master Maze sets, I`m raring to go. I`m going to play about with some of the old Steve Jackson & Ian Livingstone solo gamebooks mapped out in 3D on the table, as I`m quite curious to see how that will work out. I am starting though, with "Eye of the Beholder", an old Amiga computer game that I could not resist playing out on the table top after all these years. It`s quite easy for me to convert it into a standard adventure module as I have the old player guide and cheat books.

These first images are an attempt by me to build a portion of the Waterdeep Docks. (Forgotten Realms). It was a pretty quick build though, and I felt that I wanted to do it in more detail. I`ll share the results when I do. In the meantime, here are a few images anyway.

The water portion is simply a sheet of blue tarpaulin. That reminds me, I`ll pick up a dark green one as well for darker water. I do have some DF water tiles, but it`s not practical to cover a table with them. Tarpaulin gets hit by the light in a nice way as well, due to the weave and crinkles.

The wood blocks with grey spray sides you can see are just chipboard cut into 8" by "8 squares that I use to muck around with height.

Well met.

Apologies, photo size too large apparently. I`ll add when ready.

Thanks Shadox, here we go........

The top half of the tower is modular thanks to the chipboard blocks, but I`ll do pictures in more detail when I go to town on a rebuild soon.

The Sea Salt Tavern is an old kids pirate ship hull that I plan to convert into a floating tavern, maybe using medieval pieces at the top.

Very cool, I like it! That's quite the miniature boat collection you have there.

Love the huge tower with roofs and the dock, the boat collection, but above all, the mad scientist lab with the experiments laid out on slabs.

Wow! I never thought you could get such a vertical height by stacking DF pieces. That tower is huge! Very cool!

Addicted to DF - Proud owner of 147 DF sets and counting = 126 new non-bowtie sets, and 21 older bowtie sets! By some miracle, I have managed to avoid wife aggro so far...

Amazing. Never thought anyone would attempt water deep.
A really nice sized fleet you have there. (I am the proud owner of 3 boats. Party members love getting in boats. I blame the EQ game for that. As for a DM, boats and water are brilliant, they are so easy to sink and put the party in peril!!! (Good way to remove excess treasure) Looking forward to adding a hungry painted Kraken later this year ;) )

And special wow to the total huge structure.
I count six levels. Is that a record in a single set-up?? (I saw a 5 level photo of one set-up using perspex dividers and clear legs)

Palliayn,

I like your setup! ...and welcome back to the forum.

I recognize a painted GW fortress but I just can't recognize the piece with the gate. Could you tell us where it is from?

Also, I see you've got yourself quite an armada! If you like miniature fantasy ships fit for RPG, I suggest you read the following post: www.dwarvenforge.com/forum?func=view&catid=10&id=41149

Hi Biowizard, cheers and thanks for the link.

Those ships are from Flagship Games, a U.S. based company who are currently in mothballs and trading through Scalecreep Miniatures over there. Here in the U.K., a company called Black Hat is beginning to produce the range under license, including that sea beasty that Tom has used in pictures quite a bit.

I did not actually intend to end up with 10 of them, but due to an order error with Wargames Foundry about a decade ago during their moving sale, I got sent a load as an apology for their mix up. I do like a good selection of ships though, and am always on the look out for nice ones. The Wargaming side of things tends to be more fruitful than the RPG side on this, and I will take some pictures at the Salute show in a few weeks of anything interesting on offer.

That gate you mentioned, along with some bits adjoining it, are actually bashed up and re painted elements of the Games Workshop limited edition Minas Tirith gate set. I have posted another picture to show it in a wider context. The curved walls and gate behind it are the Games Workshop Helms Deep set, and other castle elements are the standard Games Workshop fortress. (Two of them in point of fact). The small round tower is obviously the wizard tower piece by Conflix.

I was playing about with building a "ward" of the Waterdeep docks, but as it was a hasty build, kept having better ideas as I went along and will do it again properly when I have the time.

My plan is to use DF pieces for the majority of the docks including sea towers, and also modular bits pre built on shelves for intricate building interiors and cellars. The following set up will be an attempt to do "Eye of the Beholder" levels on the table top.

Hey Dandare, I doubt that it`s the tallest build done as I`m pretty sure that I have seen keeps done that are a bit higher. Three levels seems to be about the limit of height using passage pieces as cladding without using something else to steady them. Watch this space, and I may go to 7 or 8 levels on a lighthouse I have in mind when I re do the thing properly.

Many years ago, I built a pyramid that was about five levels, but now that I have more DF than back then, I may try again with a larger one. Unfortunately I lost a handful of images in a laptop crash a few years back, and those were among them. I think that they have dropped off the forum server as well as they are so old.
