Hellscape 2 1 Year, 4 Months ago
So, here are some random pics of me fiddling around with the new set. This is just one basic HS2 set, plus two of the stair pieces, one plume, and of course the gate. There are various earlier HS pieces in there to fill in the blanks.

The real trick with this kind of set is figuring out how to vary the layouts. Because this kind of environment doesn't really lend itself to "rooms" per se, you have to figure out how you want to distinguish between "encounter areas," or whether you want every layout you do to simply be another minor variant on "large open area with lava streams." Which, hey, at its worst, is still pretty @#$#@# cool. ;)

So some of these are just me tinkering -- taking essentially the same basic floorplan and moving around where another sub-cavern might go, etc. And, as always, I had to get some shots in to show off the spectacular design of the set.

Hope you enjoy!

Great pictures Law - thanks!

One question - hard to tell exactly (looks good from here) but how is the color match between HS1 & HS2 (both floor and lava)?

Good question! You know, I originally didn't notice ANY difference, and the walls and floors themselves appear pretty much identical.

The lava, though -- once you asked, I took a closer look, and I admit there are some differences. The newer pieces have a much glossier paint job. Maybe that's just age, maybe the gloss on the older pieces has faded. Also, the original Hellscape lava is much more detailed. There's a "crust" at the top, little bumps and so on that are colored dark red, almost brown, and the new pieces don't really have that. The gloss is part of this, perhaps -- the sculpt appears just as detailed, but the paint is not picking out the detail, it's a bit muddier. Again -- I didn't even NOTICE at first, so we're talking about a pretty subtle difference here. But it is there. It isn't going to leap out at anyone, though, and I think for most tabletop arrangements, you won't notice it.

Great setups, thank you for sharing! The new HS2 (+additional pieces) is really fantastic! I hesitated for a long tome to get a HS1 set because I was not such a fan of the repeating floor pattern. I finally gave in and got it + 4 the Teleporter floor pieces because the previews of the HS2 looked so good. After seeing your photos I'm absolutely sure I made the right call. HS1s+HS2 looks just awesome! :)

Hello everyone,

Like Law, i tried last week to make differents maps (with 2 HS1 and 2, and after 3 HS2 and 2HS1....my table was too small lol :) )to see the possibilities that i had now with the Hellscape set 1 and 2. And really, i appreciated that Stefan heard us about the differents floors.

I think that now, this set is really Amazing, and with the extra individual pieces, we have much much possibilities (exactly as i would like to have !)

Really, Thanks Stefan (and Casey !!! :))

Law & Lordannilhus,

Thanks for the pics. All of the setups look great!

HS1 was pretty low on my list of desired sets. However, with the release of HS2, in particular the awesome gate, I've been reconsidering. After looking at your pics (and then looking at them again and again) I made up my mind and bought a few HS sets. They may not get as much use as some of the other lines, but they sure will make an impression. That gate would give even the bravest adventurer pause.

Thanks for posting these beautiful pictures. I wish more collectors would post pictures of each set to show us what they are doing. I'd like to see some three dimensional builds with higher elevations.

I love the Hellscape 2 set. Exactly what I'm hoping to see from future DF products. Cheaper base sets with mix and match deluxe items to tailor it to your needs.

I hope to see a Hellscape 3 in our future and please DF release some ice cavern sets with specialty deluxe pieces. I was sad to see the icy stalagmite sold out since I was going to buy a dozen more.
