I believe they are designed for wet erase, although dry erase also works to some point.

Just a fun fact you can take all those photograpic textures you have and import them into Dundjinni. Then you can stamp or draw those textures freely. It will even make shadows for you making a 3d effect so the walls look higher than the floors or to show different elevations of the floor itself. In fact you may not even have needed to draw a grid on the lexan as it will do that for you in whatever color you choose. It can even make campaign maps as well. The drawback to dundjinni is that the it does very little to blend textures together,so if you have a two sand textures next to eachother making a beach lets say,the contrast is apparent along the border. Not a big deal if you break up the "colors border" with rocks or other terrain. You are also printing alot of maps so ink is a cost factor. All in all the benefits far outweigh the negatives.Ill try to post some pictures later of some examples,if anyone is intrested in seeing them.Right now however I must go pick up my little girl Rhiannon.Be well everyone

Nice idea !

I bought some maps with a grid (1 square = 1 inch = 2,5cm²) last year.
Some are green, blue dark etc too.
I think every player try to get some outside terrain with squares easy to set up (not many many resin mold to make a road or a street because storage and time to spend on this is painful)

Her's a pic of what I own :

I also have a special ocean map from Descent V1 : sea of blood which is very useful to.

Vlad Taltos & Harneloot,

As interesting as Dundjinni seems to be, I think I'll stick mostly to Photoshop for arrangements of the same texture that cover the whole board. I understand that you can create whole new maps with walls, rivers, roads and grids put on it with Dundjinni but I don't want to spend the time necessary to make a whole new foam board panel for such a complex map I would use only once or twice. I think I'll make a new board with Lava (I bought the perfect texture for this on Shutterstock, it was expensive but worth it; thanks for the idea jgarner44) and for printing only one repeat of the same texture, Photoshop does it very well with a lot of ease. Now, if I were to print roads, rivers, lakes, craters, houses,... and slide the printed material underneath my Lexan grid but on top of whatever foam board I'm using without using glue in order to reuse the prints and vary the combinations, I think this would make for a very good use of Dundjinni for me.

HQF,

I also have a green felt with a 1" inch grid printed on it. The felt material mimics the structure of grass and the overall appearance of the setup gets better. The only drawback is you cannot draw on felt...

Wow... I'm just getting into 3D gaming after many years as a pen-and-paper RPG enthusiast, and I'm super impressed with the quality of some of the creations you experts come up with. The lexan-over-printed-textures idea is brilliant and makes for a really attractive layout. Thanks for sharing the idea; it's now on my (increasingly lengthy) list of cool ways to improve my own setups.

More fantastic work Biowizard. I plan to make my own portable gaming table top. It will be a lengthy project beyond my meager skills of carpentry at this stage, but I plan to grow into the project as I proceed. I really like this, it looks far better in use with the 3D terrain than I had expected it to. Thanks for sharing the results and the methods!

My players rue the day I bought "Dragon Mountain". Ever since they give every creature a bit more respect. You never know when the GM will decide that this group is crafty...

I love biowizard's textures in this thread. If anybody has links of where I can buy/download these exact same textures I'd appreciate it ;).

The images I used are available freely on the following links:

Forest undergrowth

On the "CG textures" web site, you have to register to get the pictures but it's free! I used the lowest resolution available (free of charge) and the results were terrific. You have to be a little Photoshop savvy (especially to make the rock slabs seamless and have the proper 1" square size) to bring the best out of those pictures, but it's not that difficult. I unfortunately cannot post my modified versions of those pictures here as it would constitute copyright infringements.

Regarding the ocean texture, I just can't locate where I downloaded it originally from. I remember it was freely available. Here it is, in its unmodified original version:

As a follow-up of the following threads: Here & here
...and more details here: lecartomancien.blogspot.ca/

I was looking for a textured transparent surface to enhance the appearance of liquid (ocean, lava, marshes...).

I think I found what I needed, an acrylic lighting panel. You can find such panel easily in any big surface hardware store. They are used to cover common office lighting. I paid about $25 for two 2'*4' panels that I easily cut to the right dimension with a regular cutting knife.

I think these will look good on top of the fully programmable LED light box I plan doing.
