Biowizard, sorry, misunderstood me...not styrofoam...it would be a dark grey spongy like foam usually found in miniature storage cases...they would be custom cut to fit our shapes in the best way...

Stefan,

How many pieces would it hold?

A foam storage system could be a nice way of transporting a few sets. And to store old sets if you lost the styrofoam.

I guess I am wondering how such a foam transport system could be any less bulky that the original boxes?

In my mind, there would not be much use for such grey foam casing for storing/transporting DF pieces. Unlike minis, DF pieces can lay flat on most surfaces without too much side to side movement because of the felt bottom. Really Useful Boxes that have the necessary depth, have a very flat bottom, are quite sturdy and are already providing the maximum storing capacity with regards to # of DF pieces contained per units of volumes. Of course, if you were to drop those plastic containers on the floor, DF pieces would move and start to bump onto each other but I'm pretty sure no one wants to handle those precious pieces that harshly between gaming locations! I agree with Harneloot here that the original Styrofoam boxes are already doing the trick for postal shipping and/or moving conditions.

I don't think there would be much need for a foam storage system either. The original boxes are great for protection and transport already and now I'm using 'Really Useful Boxes' for storage and ease of access a foam system would probably just add more bulk.

I agree 100%. It might be a cool thing to have a replacement when one of the original boxes gets damaged/broken. But I don't think we really need any new "storage for transportation" system. The original boxes do a fine job there.
And the "Really Useful Boxes" are perfect for home storage in my opinion.

I have now filled all the drawers of my cabinets and I am now selling the few DF sets that I no longer want on eBay. In all, I did not realize I owned that many Sets of DF already (53); hurray for the addiction!!! I could fit all of them within 7 drawers and a half. If you do the math properly and have the same proportion of very small Sets (mostly the Accessories Sets) as I do, one drawer contains an average of 7 Sets. Finally, the cost of the cabinets represents only 6% of the total value of the Dwarven Forge stuff I'm storing in it; that's relatively cheap!

Here are pictures of the first nine drawers (The 10th drawer contains a project I have not yet talked about on this forum).

Drawer 1 (mostly self painted goodies, miniature carpets, wizkids and self-made gelatinous cubes)

Drawer 2 (a small proportion of my stuff yet to paint + all my classic walls, corners and doors)

Drawer 3 (Classic accessories)

Drawer 4 (Classic passages)
