When i and my friends rollplay we tend to only build upp the room/place where battle accurs. The problem whit the room sets are that they are to modular. What we would like is the exact thing you have done. Its faster and lacks place for the things that hold every thing togher (which i find very anying by the way since they are ugly). The reason for us to only build the battle location is that after level 5+ (D&D3,5) it becomes virtually impossible to build upp the deungeons in advance. For a typicall duengeon we useally build upp sample passage ways (corner, T-crossing...) and typicall rooms (large, small...). This is great since it doesnt give the players any hints of how big the deungeon is and allows much more freedom for the GM. The cavern core set and passage ways are the DF stuff that is best for this kind of use.

I would really like if DF started producing this things or i have some ideas of pinning/glueing some of the room tiles togheter and greanstuff in beatwean.

I am curreous have durable is the HA stuff? do they easely crack are they fragille? How long do every peice approxemely take to make and dry? how much does every piece cost overall when finished? where did you buy it (homepage ordering/ store)?

I dont understand the urge for every one to make the collor an axact match of DF stuff. If i had made them i would make the floor in other collors to get some variety and flawor. And peherhaps added muld and rubble in the corners. And i would really like to make wooden floors so that one could make house interiors, do HA have alternetive floor designs (carved passages like in mines, wooden supported walls, wooden wals, mud walls...)?

Overall you have made the most impressing dungeon tiles i have seen so far on this forum keap up the good work and se to it that you could bring it all to display on LinCon this late spring? :P

The link to the HA page is www.hirstarts.com/

There is no limit to what colours you can use - the reason I decided to copy the DF colouring was to expand on the DF sets I have purchased and to substitute for the sets I want, but which seems to be somewhat difficult to get hold of.

I really enjoy trying different things, which means that I have already done a water section sculpted to look like the cavern floors, an experimental mine track section in order to figure out how to make a full set of mine tracks, and now I've jumped headfirst into the HA moldmaking process! I'm planning to do a few more of the 4x4 squares before I start in earnest with the mine track - I'm a little undecided on the final approach, though...

I bought two HA molds - the fieldstone walls and the cracked floor tiles - and it takes about ten minutes to get a mold set, and another couple of minutes about five minutes later to scrape the molds of excess plaster - a half hour later you can remove the pieces from the mold and start the process all over again. Drying time for the plaster pieces is a day or two. I need to make at least three castings to produce enough pieces for two of the 4x4 squares, as each needs 16 floor tiles and the mold produces 10 full tiles and a couple of half tile pieces for the balance.

Casting is a slow process, requiring little effort in the actual casting, but needing a lot of drying time before the pieces can be used. Painting each finished piece is a 2-step process, basecoating in black (for the DF look) and then drybrushing _slooowly_ with Codex Grey and Rotting Flesh to get the right sort of greenish tint.

The DF resin pieces are definitely more durable than the HA plaster stuff, expecially since the HA pieces consist of a large number of plaster castings glued together. Plaster is prone to cracking, and the joints are not exactly what I would use for a Space Shuttle, like...

The weight of the pieces is about the same - HA and DF have the same satyisfying heft, which is something i really like!

Guest,

I Like the Idea of Setting Up "Sample" Corridors for establishing a Marching Order and the Like, then Building what is needed as the Party Comes upon it... The Only Real "Advantage" to laying everything out is that there is little question about "Where" the Party is at any Given time, notheing worse than having the Party Discover Something by "Accident" because in my Mind they have Moved To "Y" while one of the Players thinks that they are still at Location "X"... When using a Battle Mat I often will make "Sample" Sections of Road for out door travel (Even use the Cavern Floor tiles for road way), and then drop any encounters in as we go... I had not thought to do that with the Passages, it might just encourage me to use my passages a little more...<Chuckle>... All of this having been said, I have to add that I really dig the "Look" of seeing a nice DF layout on the Table... And Yes Willypold's efforts in this are Legion at this point....<Smirk>...

I wish I could do Hirst Arts. I have enough problems just doing rock molds for outdoor terrain :( I might have to break down and buy some custom pieces. Anyone done cavernous passages with 45 degree or 30 degree angles? I keep suggesting them for new sets, but get little responce.

Ahhh... I Get it... I am Definately a Proponant of Larger Pieces... But that is Directly a Reflection of the Fact that I prefer to Build Larger Rooms... (So that Minis are Not Over Cramped)...

Yes, like making large rooms. More things you can do within them. You know with this sale I broke down and bought 5 starter, 2 passage and 2 alpha sci fi sets....At this price I just could not resist. Should be able to make some larger rooms with that....

I remember Admin saying something about a Con that they would under sell some of thier Sci-Fi sets at but it was Tooooooo far for me to go. I don't like the fact that so few Gaming Conventions are in this part of the world.
