Last nights final battle... 2 Years, 3 Months ago
I currently DM a Pathfinder campaign. Early on in my campaign the players encountered a powerful evil wizard who, unfortunately, easily defeated them. Just before the last player lost consciousness he heard the wizard say to himself "I shall add your mindless bodies to my army". When they came to they were in an unfamiliar city, with unfamiliar constellations. They had all experienced bizarre nightmares; killing innocent people, burning cities, and leading armies of undead monsters. The city they awoke in appeared to be empty but they quickly realized that it was infested with zombies, ghouls, and a host of other undead monsters. It became a sort of detective story as they collected evidence as to what had happened to them and made their way through the undead town. Along the way they learned that an undead army had flooded out of a tower in the center of the town which served as a university for young spell casters. They also discovered that just before the invasion a noble by the name of Hasker had been reprimanded by the university for attempting to gain access to restricted parts of the university. He was fired and escorted from the school, however, he murdered his escorts and fled to the lower parts of the tower. Moments later the undead horde came. Upon learning this, the party decided to make their way toward the Hasker manor home. They encountered a necromancer who admitted to aiding the undead army of her own volition. They killed the necromancer and pressed on. Unfortunately they encountered a dread ghoul and three ghouls under his control. They fought well and were victorious but at a heavy cost. Our rogue died in the fight. Burying her by the shore they pressed on toward the manor home but were forced into the family crypt by a large party of zombies. The crypt wasn't much better but they fought their way through and found a secret entrance into the manor home. Searching the home they discovered Hasker in the room shown in the pictures below. He introduced his first wife who ended up being the reanimated corpse of the necromancer that they had killed earlier. To their horror, his second wife was the reanimated corpse of their fallen comrade (the girl who played the rogue who now played an inquisitor just looked at me and said "you bastard"). The arcane circle in the center acted as a portal that would transfer anyone who entered to the balcony. The fight very nearly ended in a TPK with 3 unconscious and dying and two finishing up Hasker. This time they decided to burn the bodies.

I missed taking pictures of the crypt. Next time I will keep the camera at the DM table. I used a DnD cardboard tile for the circle. Here is the final fight:

Stumpet - Dwarf Fighter
Illero - Gnome Summoner

Jericho, you have a talent for writing! I was completely engrossed by the events befallen your heroes and was hoping to read more!

Great setup, too. I liked the upper floor and the use of columns.

More, please.

I really love this setup. Despite its simplicity it has some charm to it, along with the ability to provide a real tactical advantage to the bad guys ;)

I thought I would update the game....

Upon exiting the manor home the companions heard shouts coming from near the western wall. A small army of soldiers were indiscriminately putting down zombies as they made their way toward them. Nearly being mistaken for undead themselves, the party shouted at the soldiers declaring that they were very much alive. It turns out that the leader of the small army was the former town sheriff. He formed this vanguard to take back the city upon hearing that the majority of the undead horde had moved northward - however, most of these soldiers were farmers a month ago. Most of his trained soldiers were killed during the invasion and subsequent retreat. His first stop was the Hasker manor home where he was hoping to confront Hasker for his suspected crimes. After seeing Hasker's body the sheriff trusts the companions implicitly.

Over the next several days the companions lick their wounds at a field medic station just outside of town and try to piece together where they should go from there. They meet a high cleric of the goddess Desna and learn that several patients exhibiting the same memory loss as the companions have wound up in his care - like the companions they speak a strange dialect and require magical means to communicate with locals. The companions interview these patients and learn that all share one common theme - the black robed wizard and disturbing nightmares.

Three days after the events at Hasker Manor, the companions received a message from the local Sheriff requesting a meeting. His forces have slowly been cleaning out the infested city but have been unsuccessful with the university. In fact, they haven’t even been able to get near it. Whenever they try they are overcome with a deep sense of fear and typically flee. The sheriff suspects sinister magic. The companions decide to give it a try. They felt the fear as they approached the fence, however, they were able to muster up the courage to push through. Immediately they came face to face with a pack of zombies in a small wooded area. After a long battle the companions were victorious and pushed on. As they entered a thinned region of the forest they were able to see the entrance to the tower. Out front a bug bear practiced his archery while a small party of goblins played keep-a-way with a human head. Nearby, two mangy tumorous hounds fought over the head’s lower torso. The goblins and hounds were no match for the heroes, and the bug bear was quickly overcome by the party’s greater numbers. The goblins were adorned with crude tribal tattoos that seem to depict a ram's skull.

Inside the central tower they found a statue of a manticore. Illero, sensed that this statue contained magic. Before he could determine it’s nature, Josephine began to scream. She fell to the floor, eyes focused far away, choking herself. Her companions tried to stop her but in the end her neck was covered with burns rather than bruises. She related what she saw. The statue came to life and latched its tail around her throat. The tail then exploded into flames burning her. Grrrr treated her wounds. Illero suspected that this statue was a magical trap set by the former occupants of the tower to stand guard against intruders. There was probably some command word to negate the effects (wasn't true but it sounded better than my explanation as to why it was there so I went with it).

They found a recently excavated portion of the floor. Below they encountered small demons whose tears burned like acid. They dispatched the demons and discovered a large glass mirror that reflected back some other room. Illero and Edlin gazed too long into the mirror and began to uncontrollably throw themselves at it. A few of the companions remember this large mirror from their nightmares that they had prior to waking up in the strange city. They remembered that it appeared as black glass initially but was activated somehow allowing them to step through. Furthermore, they remember stepping through into their current room from the room they now looked at through the mirror.

They discovered an arcane circle that transports those who stand inside it to different parts of the tower using the arcane words for up and down. They used it to reach the second floor. The room was pitch dark. Only Stumpet and Illero could see. Stumpet immediately saw a ghostly specter and charged him. The others only saw her run into the darkness. The specter flew over their heads but Illero's eidolon lept up and grappled the specter constricting it in mid air until everyone else was able to beat it into oblivion.

They traveled up to the top of the tower and entered the private chambers of the former head of the university. To their horror a Lich Shade awaited them. It mentioned a name...Heliax. Also, coming from a nearby skull clad cabinet they could hear a voice...though they knew where it seemed to be coming from they were aware that they could hear it in their minds instead of through their ears. It whispered demoralizing things to them (will save to avoid shaken condition). To the dwarf who was searching for her father..the voice told her that her father was in the abyss with the speaker...to the summoner who was forced out of his gnomish society due to his practicing of forbidden magic it spoke of the disappointment that his parents have for him...the new player that joined shortly after their former comrade died...it asked if she truly believed she could replace her companion's deceased friend...the witch heard the voice of their fallen comrade asking why she had let her die...why didn't she use her magic to heal...and to the elf magus it simply said...the fire was your fault (his back story is only known to the two of us but it involved a fire and innocents perishing). An intense battle followed. Edlin was knocked unconscious and lay dying on the floor. Three soldiers, dispatched by the sheriff managed to enter the university grounds and followed the trail of bodies to the tower (the object in the cabinet is the cause of the mass fear spell and it was focused on the players and so it weakened its area affect). One of the soldiers was killed by the Lich immediately. In the end Stumpet was killed by the Lich just before he was destroyed. The companions found a black shard of glass in a skull clad ornate cabinet. The shard was intensely magical and was the source of the demoralizing voices they all heard. In a last ditch effort the shard ordered them all to join it in the abyss and take their own lives (another will save to avoid a self coup d'grace..if exceeded by less that 5 obtained the fear condition). Josephine, unable to resist, began to stab herself repeatedly with her rapier before Illero could tackle her to the ground. The suicidal feeling passed. One of the soldiers fled in terror. A bag was also found inside the cabinet. They quickly put the shard into the bag and the voices faded. They noticed a map on their way out and took it with them.

They rushed Stumpet’s body to the high cleric at the med station. The cleric told them that there is a spell that might bring her back but the materials were rare and expensive. They scrounged up the materials (a small side quest) and are now waiting anxiously for their friend’s return. While waiting they visit the sheriff and give their account of the events that just transpired. After reviewing the events and the map, he recommends that they seek out the former head of the university who is currently recovering in the nearby elven city. The university head is named Kvothe (yeah yeah I steal all of my NPC names) and he was gravely injured during the invasion. He was locked into a magical duel with an unknown black robed wizard near the very spot that the companions woke up in. Though he managed to temporarily incapacitate his enemy, Kvothe was seriously wounded. The sheriff sent three of his finest soldiers to escort the dying Kvothe to the elven city. Shortly after the black robed wizard took his army northward leaving a few of his generals behind. One of the companions recalled the wizard due (I slipped him a piece of paper with what he remembered and he chose only to reveal some of the information). He recalled to the group that one of his nightmares matched the story of the duel. He remembered that they led a squadron of undead into the hotel that they woke up in. Inside they chased a young man into the supply closet (he left out that they viciously murdered him). One of innkeepers slammed the supply closet door and barred it so that they couldn't get out. Suddenly he heard an explosion and two mighty voices shouting in some arcane tongue just outside the inn. There were several unnatural sounds and then a loud snap...blackness...and the end of the nightmare. When he awoke they were in the supply closet that he dreamed of. It became apparent to them that their nightmares were vaguely remembered real events. The spell casters agreed that the black robed wizard...possibly named Heliax...had temporarily held them in mental bondage...an enslavement that he lost when injured by Kvothe during the duel.

They agreed to track down this Kvothe to get more answers. The sheriff stocks them with food and water and mentions a small thorpe that is on they way. He gives them a wax stamped writ that will earn them a few free nights with the innkeeper there.

Till next time...
