Paizo Beginner Bash 2 Years, 8 Months ago
Most of you will likely be aware that I have become an avid Pathfinder GM in the Pathfinder Society. With my own children growing up I have started to introduce them into playing as well. And since the autumn break I have started to introduce some of my sons friends (all 10, turning 11 now) into the game as well.
The Beginner Box and the Beginner Bash seem an ideal fit. Yesterday was strike at school - many parents struggled to find something for their kids to do - so I offered a full day of gaming 'during school time'. Parents were glad - and the kids enjoyed it a lot.
As DF collector I tried to make it a fully rounded experience. I will post here all 4 parts with some comments.

Picture 1 shows the gaming table. I did some preparation ahead of time.

Picture 2 Some might have seen pictures from my gaming room in the past here. I like the Golarion map that I have on the wall as I can quickly show ahead of a game where everything happens.

Picture 3 shows the four heroes in front of some DF. The black tiles are some not yet painted Cavern tiles using Hirst Arts. I lately used up some resin that was starting to go bad and haven't yet had time to paint them. The blue glass stones are part of a riddle/trap.

Picture 4 shows the layout of the first mini adventure. For people new to DF - you could build it with small alterations using a single room set. Only the black chasm and the pillars would be missing and the enrtance wouldn't be central (I use 2 half walls) but would move 5 feet sideways. It is important for me to point out simple layouts that can be done with a single set as I hope to entice new collectors in Europe soon. And while a lot of pictures here are great - they also can be daunting for a new collector.

The Rogue is the first one making it across the chasm. The change in colour of the stones is deliberate but I don't want to give it away here. I had the cleric falling down (and possibly dying) three times due to low acrobatics coupled with artocious dice rolling.

An aerial view. The altar in the background is Grendel. Ideally I would have 2 thrones - but you take what you have and adapt descriptions.

Here is the second mini adventure. I use a Paizo Flip map for the terrain. Everything else is from a single Realm of the Ancients 2 box.

Picture 1 shows everything prepared on the side.

Picture 2 - action. The group approaches the ruined temple. I used two floor plates on top of each other for elevation. The wolf and goblins are from Otherworld. Being on 1 HP the wolf tries to flee - but gets killed by an AoO. Well - not truly killed - with 10 year olds the cleric used Rebuke Death to keep the wolf and 3 goblins alive. Just one had taken so much damage from a critical sneak attack that he was dead, dead.

Actually a shame I didn't do more pictures - but for this one I did have a total of 6 kids at the table (my daughter and her friend joined this one as well) and being GM

Mini adventure 3. I'm using most of the layout from adventure 1. As said earlier - this layout can be done using a single Room Set. The only other DF added is a set of 8 pillars.

Picture 1: The layout

Picture 2: The 2 coffins are from Hirst Arts and cast / painted by myself. The 4 statues are undercoated very old figures which I bought in bulk from someone moving away and cleaning out.

Picture 3 and 4: The candle has a special meaning - run the adventure to find out yourself.

Picture 5: Skeletons stirring. I use 4 DF skeletons and one non DF as leader, champion.

Picture 6: The adventurers entering the crypt.

The fourths and last mini adventure. A nice way to show of the Medivial Building Set. I didn't check it out as I mixed up my sets - but I'm sure you can build something very similar with a single set. You could also easily build the room with any of the other sets - Classic, Den of Evil or Realm of the Ancients. None of them would feel wrong. Often more important is interior and monsters for flavor.

Picture 1: The overall layout. The carpet adds nicely to an interior room. And yes - I sex changed to poor wizard and the cat became a fox ... GM liberties ...

Picture 2: Interior can add a lot to the look and feel. The items displayed are a mix and match from various acessory sets. Including treasure set and MBS tavern set.

Picture 3, 4 and 5: The group is looking for a book. I therefore couldn't resist and lay out some openly.

Picture 6 and 7: The box becomes alive. The figures are both Otherworld Miniatures but I'm not sure the mimics ever went on sale. Sometimes it helps to be a 'preferred customer'.

Picture 8 and 9: Still in search of the book

I hope you enjoyed this. My understanding is that the four mini adventures should become free downloadable soon. Until then they are used for the Beginner Bash to advertise the Paizo Beginner Box. Try to contact your local Venture Captain from PFS if you are interested or download them once they are available.

They are great to introduce new players who haven't done RPG before.

Hmmm - did clean up some pictures before posting last post - needed this extra post to fix it by uploading them and editing the above post.

Seems all looks now as it should.

Good example of simple set ups and what can be done with single sets. Looks like the kids must have had a fun day of gaming.

Introducing new players to the hobby is always a good thing, there are never enough of us!

Nice way to show what you can do with just a few sets, as I am in that boat myself, owning just a few sets. This should also help people new to DF, keeps them from being so intimidated by the massive layouts we see here.

Yes, i like this idea, and it seems really easy to build. No need to have a lot of sets :)

Thanks Thod

Nice work Thod! Any indication of continued interest from some of the kids? The Beginner Box is very cool.

Do you mean about mobbed on the playground when the next game is ??

This wasn't the first game - I did start in the autumn school break with a full module - 2 days of 6 hours playing each. I had one new player from my sons class. I had planned 2 more - but they had been on holiday away with parents.
I followed up with 2 Pathfinder Society scenarios - Murder on the Silken Caravan and Prince of Augustana (also some pictures somewhere further down).

So the Beginner Bash was mainly to advertise the Beginner Box. There is adveritsing on the back of the card I sign. That way the parents at least know what to search for online.

And yes - one player is very, very keen. I could GM for him every other day. The others are also keen to play on. The plan is - carry on with the current pre-gen based characters until Christmas and have a whole module with 2 day gaming in the Christmas break.

Awesome! I foresee more than a few Beginner Box sets under the Christmas trees in your neighborhood this year. Plus, these kids will come into the hobby with an appreciation of Dwarven Forge products too! Future customers for Stefan and Jeff!
It's nice to read about young kids enjoying RPGs.
