Sacrilege!

I've got mine in the attic. They just fit into them too perfectly to not keep them...

Thanks for the answers, guys. My main problem regarding expanding my collection is one of room for the boxes. Pusherman's post about how he stores his DF stuff has inspired me to consolidate my collection into smaller, more easily accessible containers. At some point, I am going to face serious aggro from my wife due to the rather large space in our storage that is being taken up by DF boxes. I guess I am try to figure out whether I can discard my DF boxes without feeling too much guilt or regret.

I've kept all my boxes, with the thought that I'd repack them in them if I moved, however, they are pretty well stored in my drawers now and I'm not sure I'd actually repack them all. I think I keep those mostly because of some innate hoarder built into me...

Just think of them as extra insulation if you store your empty boxes and foam in your attics :)

I still keep my sets in their original boxes in my basement. I like the Really Useful Boxes and will invest in some as soon as I find I'm using my sets regularly.

DO NOT THROW THEM OUT!

At least, not if there's even the slightest possibility that you'll ever move.

I stored mine in their DF boxes for years, until it just got to be too much. I saw how much less room they took up without all that styrofoam, packed them all in bins, and had tons of extra room for several years.

And then I moved to Florida.

Sadly, just about every set took SOME hits, and some sets, like the Cavern Set, were pretty much a total loss. Some could be repaired to look almost good as new, but others just couldn't. I wish I had time to take out the paint, green stuff, and bits boxes to customize these into something kewl, but as it stands, I have to re-invest in just about everything. Which, given how little money I have right now, kinda sucks. :(

In March, I'm definitely grabbing a Cavern set and a Room Set. Meanwhile, I'm wavering on picking up another ROTA set. And wondering if the Chasm Set is going to come back, ever.

It's so terribly sad... sigh.

I am glad I read this. I was thinking about throwing them out but I am a grad student wrapping up my PhD in 2012 and will probably bounce post doc to post doc for a long time (especially with the state of the economy). I am going to throw them in the closet so that when it does come time to move I don't have to worry about it.

We invest a considerable amount of money into making molds for the shape of the styrofoam which is very useful when shipping or moving...however, If you have thrown them out, I would suggest using cotton, or lambs wool and tucking it into the area's around the pieces so that they don't jiggle around, that will help a great deal...

I didn't realize the effort that went into it, Stefan, but the packaging has always been one of the big advantages of DF. The custom styrofoam ensures that we can always trust our sets to aresrive intact, and does make storage a breeze. I really sang the praises of the packaging for YEARS.

It was only when I started to feel pressured for space that I reluctantly decided to try to trim down -- plus, the DF sets ARE remarkably resilient, I'd dropped pieces by accident before and had no problems. So I think I trusted a bit too much to fate.

It was a mistake. The packaging is perfect, and I never should have tossed it. Even on sets that DID survive my move, I'm thinking of ordering a spare just so I know I'll always have one version in its protective shell, safe from the ravages of the outside world.

Yeah, I'm a bit odd.

Stefan, it definatly shows that you put a lot of time and efforts into the boxes and foam and i appreciat that level of detail.

I purchase some MBA buildings the other day and the quality of their packaging is shameful. To the point where i hesitate to buy more.

I really hope you keep your standards regarding the packaging of DF sets.

Couldn't agree more. Their styrofoam just falls to peices as you unpack the building - horrible!

I agree. I was actually quite upset about MBA's low quality styrofoam. But, in all honesty, they are really the only game in town when it comes to buying pre-painted, high quality, well made, fantasy terrain at 25/28mm scale.

After I received my first large shipment of MBA stuff, I felt compelled to call Jeff Martin to express my thanks to him and Stefan for the incredibly high quality packaging of the DF sets. It really makes a difference. Alas, I now have 122 sets. In view of Law's e-mail, I will try to keep the original boxes, but I worry that I will, at some point, have to choose between buying more sets and pitching the old boxes due to space constraints. I am inclined to select the latter.
