My first attempt at making a river resulted in a plain piece of plywood painted green. The next step was actually sculpting a proper riverbank, and here is the result. The first picture shows the unpainted but sculpted piece. I used wood as filler pieces and the sculpting medium is Milliput. The main tools I used was a small flat screwdriver and a very small fork...

And here is the fully painted, but not yet watered section. The colouring is a near, but not perfect match, using a black basecoat, Codex Gray drybrushed on top of that, with Rotting Flesh highlights.

Holy -- $!!$!!@#%

That is one of the best homemade DF pieces I've ever seen! Truly outstanding!

You say the paints were just black, followed by grey, then highlighting with brownish yellow? I hope to be able to match the paints on any future homemade or Grendel resin pieces I end up using....

Thanks for the kind words! :D

Yes, black, followed by gray, followed by rotting flesh. The last one is more of a beige with a slight greenish hint. You need a very uneven surface for the gray to get the right response from the black basecoat. Work on the gray until even the darkest recesses are dark gray rather than black. You shouldn't start with the dark gray, as it will be too flat and you need a hint of the black underneath. The highlights are a little different on the various cavern pieces: the floors are lighter gray, while the walls and the loose floors are more light brown. I tried to aim for something closer to the floor pieces and looking at the pieces side by side my section is still more gray than the DF sections, but I'm happy with the match!

I Love it... I Love it, I Love It!!!... And Have you Thought about some Sort of "End" cap? Like Build up the Ends a little too, and have the River Flow "Under" a rock Formation or Down into a Hole/Crag Etc?... Not Knocking it, you did a Great Job on the Textures of the Stone, the Banking it's Great... I Would Love to See the Water "Go Somewhere" too...

I have a number of different configurations planned - I will publish photos as soon as they are finished. I approach the design very much like some sort of inverted passages - the first piece is the equivalent of an 8 inch long passage. As I have two more pieces of plywood on hand I will turn one of them into a curved corner (4x4 inch) and the other into another long passage, but with a drainage pool at one end.

Other versions will be single-shore for open water beyond...

And thanks for your comments!

It really shouldn't be that difficult, you know...

What you would need is two sections where the river enters and leaves the cave. Another two pieces which end the river without going through the walls. A few straight sections like the one I made, but perhaps 4x4 inch instead of my long section. A few curves to run the river in different directions. Another two pieces with the river branching off in a third direction. This will make a set of 10-12 pieces for a basic cavern river.

Willypold,

I Have Never Worked with the "Water" Resin Stuff... Was it Law that Mentioned that it is difficult to get to Stay in Place with an "Open" Edge? I'm Guessing you would Need a Form that the Resin could set in? I Dunno... But your River Piece is a Fine place to Start, and the Fact that the Bank Slopes makes a HUGE diferrence...

And we are back!

It was a fabulous trip! I highly recommend anyone doing a Nile cruise if they have a chance!

I am going to put up a selection of pictures on my homepage this weekend, but as soon as I've located the pictures from Kom Ombo i will let you in on a fantastic discovery that has a lot to do with DF! :D

PS. Thanks for the kind words!
