I haven't used the HA molds, but I'm going to order a couple of them - only need to decide which I'm going to start with. Seems like fun, but I'm also going to complete my basic DF collection, as I really like the weight and quality of the pieces!

The sets I feel are a must right now is the Cavernous passages, and a Room and passage set as soon as it becomes available again (as the room set didn't show up with the last order). It does put a bit of a strain on your budget getting 6 sets in a short while... (The others being the Cavern, both WA sets and the short passages.)

What does a mine look like? Rough hewn walls, shored up with wooden props, track running down the middle... The first real life mine railroads appeared in Germany in the 15th Century (or thereabouts), and used half-logs as rails and wheels looking like the cores for sewing thread (whatever _they_ are called). It took another while before people invented flanged wheels in the real world, but I see no reason why our fantasy worlds shouldn't have hit upon the same idea - it is ingenious, but actually quite simple! (Just like most really ingenious ideas, in fact...)

A crossing track would use a simple handpushed turntable holding a single car. A larger set piece could be a central hall with several tunnels leading off, with scaffolding and other interesting things - I keep getting these visions of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom... :D

Willypold,

I Can See that... Maybe have some areas that have "Broken away" beneath the Mine Tracks? So that the PC's gotta' make some Dex checks to get across?... You Could also have a Water Crossing, Where a Spring is leaking from a wall... Of Course the Obligatory Ruined Track Section...

GM: "Ok folks roll your Operate Vehicle Check for the Speeding Mine Cart you are in, asThere is a Bad Section of Ruined Track ahead"...

Hapless Player 1: "Uh... My What!?"...

Hapless Player 2: "So can I use my Thieves Sneak Attack to Get a Bonus to Grab the Brake Lever? You Know Kinda' Sneak up an' Grab it?"

GM: "What... No Operate Vehicle Skill... ? Pity that..." What's your Highest Stat?"

Hapless Player 1: "Uh i'm a Barbarian, so Definately my Strength..."

Hapless Player 2: "Well...?"

GM: "Ok... So What is your Lowest Stat?" (And to Hapless Player 2), "No The Thief can not Sneak up on the Mine Carts Brake Lever..."

Hapless Player 2: "Damn!"

Hapless Player 1: "Well my Intelligence is 13 Can I use that?"

GM: "What's your Lowest Stat..." (Looks at the Newly Created Broken Mine Track Section thoughtfully), "You Know you Guys are still moving towards that thing Right?"

Hapless Player 3: "Gumbo the 1/2 Orc Shaman is Going to Curse really Loud!"

GM: "You are Going to Curse the Track? I Think it is already Cursed!"

Hapless Player 1: "My Lowest Stat is my Charisma at 6"

Hapless Player 2: "How Much Damage will I Take if I Jump?"

Hapless Player 3: "No, I don't want to Curse the Tracks, I'm Just Gonna' Curse!"

GM: (to Hapless Player 1:) "Then Roll it..." (To Hapless Player 2:) "A Whole Bunch... You Gonna' Do it?"

Hapless Player 1: "You want me to roll my Charisma to Control the Mine Car?"

Hapless Player 2: "Hey Can Gumbo Cast Feather Fall on the Whole Cart?"

GM: "No of Course not, Ju-ju the Barbarian can not Control the Cart with his Charisma, but he is Going to Need to Make a Leadership Roll to Get Slick Fingers the Thief to Make a Dex Check on the Bloody Thing!"

Hapless Player 1: "Oh... Well Why Can't I Just Use Strength to Pull really hard on the Brake Lever...?"

Hapless Player 2: "Forget it, I'm Jumping and I'll take My Chances!"

Hapless Player 3: "Ummm... I Don't have a Feather Fall Spell, Can I Cast Slow instead?"

GM: (to Hapless Player 1:) "Go Ahead and roll your Strength if you want!" (To Hapless Player 2:) "You are Going really Fast and those Rock walls Willypold Built look mighty Sharp!" (To Hapless Player 3:) "Sure, you can Cast Slow on the Party if you want to"...<Laughs Maniacally>...

Hapless Player 1: "Ok... What is the DC to Stop this Thing?"

Hapless Player 2: "Damn the DF Site and all of the Wacky Ideas posted there!"

Hapless Player 3: "I Cast Slow..."

GM: "Too Late! The Cart Smashes Full Speed into the Twisted Broken Rail Tracks ahead... Everyone is Flung from the Cart and Takes 6d6 total Damage from being thrown hard into the walls, and from Falling on Razer Sharp Rocks, and an Additional 2d6 damage from Miscellaneous Debris... Gumbo Dies Slower then Every one else... Any one else need to Roll a New Character? I Have a Great Idea from the DF site for an adventure based on Lava Traps!"

Willy -- about the HA molds -- there really aren't any that work for cavernous or unhewn areas, which is one category in which DF clearly lords it over HA molds.

However, there are several molds that are useful for making general DF scenery. I'd recommend the fieldstone mold as a basic start, since that allows you to make very similar style walls, and you can use the bricks to segue anything you make smoothly into the DF walls. You get small enough bricks that you should be able to start interspersing htem slowly until you have a totally DF-looking piece, for a nice transition.

After that, the world's your oyster. Various gothic dungeon molds give TONS of fun things to make, the bell tower mold is a favorite of mine, there are really no rules. Whatever looks cool to you!

Well, you've talked me into trying the HA molds. I placed an order for the fieldstone walls and the cracked floor molds, to see what can be done. Results in a couple of weeks, as delivery abroad takes between 10-14 days...

Funny you should mention that MLV. I am sitting up late at the moment on Sunday night (my time) getting some maps ready for my D&D RPG session tomorrow.

As far as train tracks are concerned, my son and I have already begun working on a 'setup' using Dwarven Forge Cavernous passages & Cavern set, along with our scratchbuilt train tracks (like the ones on my sons Dwarven Mine). My son finishes school for the year, at the end of the week, so hopefully not long after that we will have the pics ready. Otherwise, it may not be until after Christmas.

I have been silently watching this thread, and I have to say...

Looking at the use of 'actual' train tracks and DF scenery... I don't like it. Sorry guys, personal preference and all. The electric train set tracks just look... wrong. They are not ... 'chunky/awkward' enough (IMHO). I see the tracks being more 'solid' than the electric train set tracks. They just seem to .. hmm elvish, to be in a Dwarven Mine, again sorry, just my humble opinion.

I know what you're talking about. I think that when I eventually get around to my attempt at this, I'm going to make a few changes.

1) Definitely HO scale. Those are larger -- the narrow "sleekness" of the tracks in these pics gets in the way. I might even look into larger scales than HO -- the bigger the scale, the larger and clunkier the track.

2) Weathering. I'm not going to use track right outta the box. I'm going to give it an inkwash, probably chip away at some of the ties, in general scuff it up. It won't be useable, but that's okay by me. I just want the track.

I don't have the patience or skill to make my own tracks. I think roughed up professional tracks would look better than what I can make.

You Know... it occurs to me that there are a couple of other points that we have been Missing with this...

1) This IS a Fantasy set up right? So There could be Mediums other than just Metal for the Tracks themselves, Including Heavy Wood, Stone, or Even Water Troughs? (So with say the HA Molds are there Sections of "Thin" or Thick Trim like Materials for using as "Moldings" that could Simply be Laid out like a Track)?

2) As Above we do not have to stick to Conventional Thinking, so Single Rails, Triple Rails, Grooves in the Ground etc... are all legitimate alternatives to Traditional HO Track... Hey How about Strands of Glow-N-The-Dark Plastic for "Magical" Tracks made up of some sort of "Energy"? (I Don't know maybe that is Pushing it, but you Folks get the Idea right)?

In Any Event I Really am Looking forward to seeing some of the Results here... (Even if we gotta wait until after Christmas for DarkFathers Contributions...<Chuckle>...)!

I like a lot of those ideas, MLV. The rope setup would be really cool looking but a royal PITA to try to actually create (what with all the knots and rigging). I think if I were going to do a dwarven mine, I would carve the railroad ties out of styrofoam or balsa (probably balsa--easier to whittle), and then prime & dry brush them to give them a weathered look. You could use very small fabric tacks for the "railroad spikes" to tie the rails together (use a small pair of wire snippers to trim them up).

I like the idea of carts and rails the most though. Guess it's just the way I think Dwarves would haul out tons of gold and mithril. And since Dwarves are master engineers, they'd probably have a fairly sophisticated setup as far as mining equipment goes. They'd want to ensure that they were getting their goods out in the safest manner possible.

You'd definitely need some dead-end pieces (like the ones in the original DF set with the collapsed dirt ceiling), you'd need some "X" shaped pieces so you could have mine shafts criss-cross each other. God, I could go on and on with the possibilities...
