Ruins & Underground Chambers (Repaint & Sculpture) 3 Years, 4 Months ago
I finally completed a second round of Dwarven Forge repaints with additional details. I am much happier with this set then the previous set. I did manage to come up with a dirtier tone to the pieces than I did the first time. Unfortunately, my photography does not do the pieces justice. But really, these were from a GURPS Dungeon Fantasy one-shot game last night, so I just had everybody move all the junk from the table when the heroes entered the ruins and again when they broke into the chambers below through the trap door in the ruin. I'll probably try to photograph some pictures of individual pieces in more optimal lighting conditions maybe tomorrow and post those - these are just the "action" shots.

Basically, I wanted the ruins to be covered up with overgrowth. I wanted a long abandoned feeling to them. The ruins set below is actually 2 DF ruins sets. There are about $140 scratch-built mushrooms in there, with other bits of ruins debris from their previous inhabitants or other adventures. There are vines running up the walls as well as variety of different plants growing all over the place. I tried to make sure that each piece was individually a little diorama. I wanted greater contrast between the floor and walls, so I completely repainted each piece as well. I went with a red floor, and then individually picked out stones in the walls, so that each piece has at least three different colored stones in them, and then washed the walls of each piece to make them look like they have been out in the elements for a while. The flash picked up more of the color in the walls than is present in person. The color in the walls is actually a rather subtle effect that I am very fond of.

For the underground levels, I continued the red floor with the repainted walls to unify it with the ground-floor ruins. After all, these were all part of the same tower at one time. I used the trap door in the ruins above that drops the heroes into one of the rooms downstairs. You can see them all in one room in the pictures all about to see what is in the rest of the chamber. I wanted to make each piece a diorama again, and really, for each piece to have something that the player characters might be able to interact with or otherwise be interested in. Of course, what people want to see in dungeons is weapons, so I scratch built a bunch of spears, pole-axes, and halberds to hang on the walls, as well as a bunch of shields. They make great dungeon decoration. People like barrels, so I painted up a bunch of those as well, and there are treasure chests as well. There are also a couple of crystal balls, and scratch-built books and scrolls for those looking for less material, but no less valuable forms of treasure. One hall piece has some pretty serious dwarven tapestries hanging in it, with other banners spread throughout the dungeon. I've got some stuffed animals in there too, as well as an elk and bear head.

I went ahead and put rubble around all the edges of the pieces in order to fit with the ruins theme. The ceiling has been collapsing, and the skeletons and spiders in there don't really clean house after all. The downstairs is made from one room set and one passage set.

So there you go. Hope you enjoy. Probably, I will be selling these. After I have played with them, I really just don't have room to store them.

Excellent modelling skills!
Some really good ideas here!

To be honest, it's a bit bright for my taste - I'd put a heavy brown ink wash over it all to tone it down a bit but my hat still goes off to you mate - that must've taken hundreds of hours to do!

Just out of curiosity how high did the auction go for the other sets? I really like the cartoony color scheme!

Thanks for the feedback.

I need to read up on miniature photography and give it another go. Everything is actually washed, but that does not come across in the photos very well. It is not washed in brown though (maybe I will give that a try next time), but rather in black. The red floor was actually done in ink just so the darker flood would show through a bit.

It did not take hundreds (plural) of hours to put together, but lots and lots. I was catching myself up on A Song of Ice and Fire audiobooks while I was working. I am up through a little less that half of book three now.

One thing I won't do is try so many at a time, next time (whenever that might be). I did these four sets specifically for a one-shot game, but it was a massive project. Maybe just one set at a time next time.

I took the pieces outside today to see about photographing them in the sunlight and I think the results were much better, so I wanted to post a few additional shots of individual pieces.

I read over the photographic suggestion in the Balrog Ambush thread. Yikes! Maybe later I will see about better equipment and try bouncing light of the ceiling and other surfaces and such!
