TOPIC: New set of roofs to transfrom Dwarven Forge in buildings

Out there within the Dwarven Forge community, I`ve seen two methods to get/build roofs that you can simply put upon Dwarven Forge pieces so that they look like full buildings.

First, there are those made from Tom which he describes and sells on his own web site (www.dwarvenforge.info/). Unfortunately, I cannot afford his services and hope that every Dwarven Forge enthusiasts out there will consider giving him business.

Second, I`ve seen those made from crioux (www.dwarvenforge.com/dwarvenforums/viewtopic.php?id=1665) which were done using Hirst Arts molds. Crioux decided to design a modular roof system so that he could make roofs of any shape and dimension. Unfortunately, I think the end product would not be as solid as it could be (already set upon one level or two of dwarven Forge walls) and would take considerable time to assemble.

So, I`ve decided to take a shot at making my own roofs using a combination of ideas and designs from these 2 other great Dwarven Forge fans.

I made 5 different roofs (4*6, 6*4, 6*6, 6*8, 8*8) with wood shingles using Hirst Arts molds #240 and #220:

I have used hydrostone as the plaster to cast the molds because it is very solid.
For the side of the roofs, I have filled the gaps between the plaster pieces representing wood with the plaster already premixed that you can buy from your local hardware store to fill little holes in walls before painting them...

I also made 5 different roofs (4*4, 4*6, 6*6, 6*8, 8*8) with clay tiles using Hirst Arts mold #230:

Nice job. I like a lot. It would truly be sweet if DF did something like this but do not think it well happen as more and more are doing it on their own.

But one can still dream though.

Thanks for all your kind words.
I made them for my D&D group to play with, they are not not for sale... sorry.
If you are into buying roofs, get them from Tom!
The price I could get for one roof, divided by the number of hours invested would not make this project any profitable.

In any case, I had the time to make them just by stopping watching TV for a 3 month period and redirecting my spare time to a much "profitable" endeavor. So, do not doubt your hobby and painting skills, you can make it too!

They are very nice, but I still prefer to have them modular so I can use them in any combination., and they take less storage space when they are modular too.

We have a small hope that Stefan might someday make some roofs, since I traded him my prototypes, dwarvenforge.com/dwarvenforums/viewtopic.php?id=3192

or players can do what you, Tom and I did, and make their own, either scratch built or Hirst Art.

Just something I forgot to post...

I had designed my roofs so that they would fit inside each other and take little storage space:

Still, mine can be stored in drawers 2 inch deep, along with all my other DF products. Storage is very important when you have a LOT of modules.

My hope are still that Stefan might do some roofs one day, and coming from him, we can expect to get something exceptionnal.

Another suggestion for those who build, make the roof angle lower, it take less material, allow to keep the same angle on bigger roofs (easier for mix and match) and allow easier storage too. When I have some time, I'll do another batch with lower angle.

Since I am done with this project, I will now part from my Hirst Arts molds.
For those of you interested, you can easily find them on eBay (do a "Hirst Arts" search)

I think I am going to try this. I have some hydrostone and have done some casts before. They look great.

Edit: Molds are on their way! Thanks for the idea. I too cannot afford the beautiful roofs that you mentions.
