Here are some assorted pics of setups -- I tried to include pics that show off the Grendel accessories, the advantages of stacking, and so on. I'll post more in another post (so people with slow connections don't have to wait for all the pics at once!).

Very cool!

Can you post more pics with the Grendel stuff? I'd really like to get a sense of scale, width of doors and so on.

Thanks!

I may (but I did want to post some pics that show off the DF pieces more than the Grendel ones...) but I can say this for now:

the only door I have is slightly less than 2 squares across -- it comfortably fits in a room made entirely of corner pieces. In fact, there's a bit too much room if you don't put it in a two-corner-piece section.

EDIT -- I realized later the door is actually slightly smaller than that -- it actually fits in a space made of one corner piece and one regular wall (or floor piece) -- two corner pieces will be slightly too small for it. Two open pieces leave too much room. You want a wall somewhere, to fill the extra quarter-inch or whatever it is. (in other words, it fits on two squares whose wall make an L-shape)

Also, for clarity's sake, the huge door, the two cargo piles, and the crane all come from the Cargo Bay set (which also includes a really nice shipping crate-type thing)

There are two consoles, and one is clear in the pic "scif5" in one of these posts. It's slightly smaller than the walls, and takes up about a square and a quarter. The other console does as well, but it's a big screen and taller than the walls. (it's visible in the pic of the raised "bridge" section)

The crane is huge, and towers over everything. The piles of cargo are exactly the same size as the floor pieces, so they won't fit against a wall without overlapping.

You can see clear pics of what I have at the Discount Hobby site -- I just got the consoles set and the cargo bay (my eye is on the med lab cryogenics set, as well).

I want to get more pics of the "Resident Evil"-style zombie fight. I haven't actually played the scenario (or written one) but I want to get pics of it anyway!

Thanks for the additional info. I've been debating whether the Grendel sci-fi stuff would be worth the money, and from your pics, it looks like they definitely are!

L,

Very Kewl Pics... And Yowza that Crane is Monster! Also if I Might Ask... The Computer Screens have a Nice Illusion of Glowing with that Monochrome Green-yellow effect... What Sorts of Paints are you using... And I Agree with your Earlier estimations about your being able to match the Paint Scheme Pretty well... The Combination of Some nice scenary and the DF walls and Floors is Worthy Indeed... (Like the Minis too BTW)...

Oh, I nearly forgot --

I always paint with Golden Fluid Acrylics -- they're reasonably cheap, and while they are a bit glossier than regular minis paint, the effect of that can be reduced by drybrushing and using very small amounts of paint. It's really only noticeable when you glob it on.

For the monitors, I just started by ignoring them, painting the whole thing as if it were all meant to be silver. Then I painted a mix of dark green, pthalo blue, and a little yellow on for the monitor itself, and then yellow with a tiny hint of green for the "text" on the monitors. A thin flat brush pressed directly on gives a nice straight line with just enough "bumpy" texture to look like more than just a straight line. I really like the effect, I discovered it while painting monitors on the inside of tanks for 40K (the Rhino etc). Glad I have the opportunity to use it in more visible areas!

It is a Nice Effect... I will have to experiment when I Start Painting again... Someday... <Chuckle>... I Had Considered Getting some Clear Printable Sticky Sheets and Designing some Monitors in Photoshop... Printing and Sticking... May Have to Try Both and See... Also of Course would need to Actually "Buy" some of these...<Grin>... Hey Does Discount Hobbies Reflect the Entire Stock of Grendle Sci-Fi or are there other items?

You know, I don't know if Grendel makes other stuff or not. I certainly never see any.

I love the idea of using clear plastic to make things. If I were a little less lazy (and had a more reliable computer and printer) I might try the following:

Draw (or just copy-and-paste from somewhere) some cool designs, like text or (even cooler) maps. Topographical maps, grids and so forth would be great.

Print them out on a transparency or (even better) a transparency with adhesive, a clear sticker.

Then get some clear plastic sheets (Plastrux makes 'em, easy to get at most art/hobby/craft stores like Pearl) and go nuts.

Then you could have some great SW-style maps on clear screens, characters standing behind them, etc. Look great.

I really want a viewscreen now - I have a captain's chair, but it really doesn't work if it isn't facing a viewscreen.

L,

I am 83% Sure that You Can Get Adhesive Transparent And Printable Printer Stock (From Office Depot maybe?)... But you are Right you would need a Reasonably Functional Printer to make it worth while... And With a Good Plastructs Supplier you can fabricate highly detailed Tech-stuff till the "Cows" Come home... Problem really is that unless you have a Catalog in front of you with Pictures ordering Plastruct Stuff online is Usually Tricky unless you Know the Product Code you want... But the Transparencies would be great for radar Screens, Text, "Pictures" Etc...
