So once again I come with pics of ROTA that aren't really ROTA. I haven't had a lot of time for an elaborate layout lately, and the lighting system I normally use is gone (i.e. my lamp broke). Meanwhile, though, I am repainting two intersection pieces. One to match an original design shown off at GAMA or somewhere, I think Tom posed pics on his blog. The other is my own design, though obviously based heavily on what DF did. I wanted a special "heart of the maze" room, a white marble and gold chamber. I'm going to paint the columns in the green and yellow room a dark green, and the white room columns I'm going to paint gold. I'm more happy with the white one, the other looks a bit clumpy and messy.

I have to say, at first I was really daunted by the complexity of the tiles, and I scaled back my repainting ideas. But once I got into it, I'm finding it outrageously fun. I can see myself buying ROTA sets just to paint up in various ways -- a red-and-black version, a white-and-gold version, etc. It's just a TON of fun to paint these, the tiles themselves are so well done, the sunburst pattern and the detail in them... this is very fun.

Anyhoo, I promise I'll post actual ROTA pics as soon as I can, showing off Stefan's work instead of my own tinkering around the edges. But for now this is all I've had time to do....

A few more, I like stacking the intersection pieces, and the little HA archway I made works really well in this regard, if I do say so myself...

L do you have Small Brick Mold #250, i am wondering if the bricks from that might fight better, and that arch as well?

I don't, but I think you're right -- I've been considering getting some molds, but for now I want to concentrate on ROTA itself, and pull back on the casting and painting of other accessories...

Great Job L, I'll post some pictures soon, as well as some variational designs, simple ones for those who want to try painting some....

I think you are right, painting them is a lot of fun! The boring parts have been done and so painting in your own design is just the fun creative part...we made sure the "pattern" was raised enough that it can catch the color easily with your brush. I don't think perfection is needed, as all ancient mosaics are messed up quite a bit, so that too neat a job might even be less realistic...

I like your bluish/white color...seems very greek to me...I have a design that I think is very Conan-ish...I'll post a pic in the next day or so...

I'll also post some pics of actual mosaics from around the world for inspiration....

lets have fun!

Hey L...

Nice job.

Have you thought about painting the bricks yellow?

As in a yellow brick road? :)

Really nice - I agree with Aracon though, I think that arch would blend better with the stonework the same colour as the ROTA walls.

Uti,

I was just making a silly comment about the Wizard of Oz. I think it looks great and can't wait to paint up my floor tiles... too many projects to count though so it is low on the radar for now.

Thanks guys! I went with white for most of my homemade stuff because not only are the more decorative elements of Rota white at the moment (the sun frescoes, etc) but from what we've seen of the expansion, the stairs are white and the general effect is of a sandstone backdrop with lots of white highlights. Since my accessories are all highlights, I made them all white to fit in with that aspect of it. The arch I wanted to blend more in with the crown of the walls than the background.

Plus, white is easier to turn sandstone than sandstone is to turn white -- so if I change my mind, white was a better choice as a first attempt.

L -

Don't take this as a shot, because it isn't, but both the blue and white, and the golden brown remind me of bathrooms. Blue/white is one in a friend's house here in Baltimore when I was growing up, and the golden brown was one in my Grandmother's house in SC, way back when.
Both places were very friendly, comfortable places to be, so again, this is NOT a slap in the face with a wet fish, but a compliment on a very GOOD paint job! It felt like going home to see those colors.
Thanks, man. All I need now is a warm towel to dry off as I get out of the shower and I'm a happy guy...

L,

Those paint jobs are really great. I have in the past been very reluctant to change anything that DF produces but I think, after seeing your work, that the ROTA set is actaully asking for additional creative input.

Cheers
