Year's End Festivities in Valon, City of Ice Wizards

Synopsis: The Avalonians partake in a Year's End festvial where rituals and offerings are made to Aram Kor, Keeper of the Silver Book, Turner of Seasons. In ancient days human sacrifices were made, usually of convicted murderers and such, but the Avalonians have since refined their society and look down on the practice.

On the 1st day of the festival a creepy cloaked Viridian comes to the character's apartment, claiming he is also a resident refugee, looking for the housing that was promised him. He has keys, so the group begrudgingly allows him to stay, and later tag along with them on their expedition.

The characters are granted day passes to Valon proper for the "Cultural Assimilation Day" of the Year's End Festival. Bundi is interested in the customs and religions of the Avalonians, so he attends the evening mass at the temple of Aram Kor. Bulls are sacrificed in the preliminary givings to the Turner of Seasons, although the main ritual takes place 12 days hence, on the eve of the New Year. While Bundi is in the temple Gorice, Bemusa and Xaran fail to notice the warlock get his pockets picked by a street urchin.

I'd been looking forward to running a festival for a while, so I did a bit of research on traditional Dutch games, as I'm basing the Avalonians on a more Arthurian wizard-knight Netherlands.

Characters (1st picture, left to right):

Xaran Mer Shunna, evil Viridian wizard
Bundi "Bump" Hrafnstyr, lawful neutral Skandik cleric of Tyr
Bemusa the Amazon, chaotic evil barbarianess
Gorice, evil Orichalan star pact warlock

The characters walk up to the square where a couple of the Avalonian sporting events are hosted.

They spot a pole sticking out of the canal, and a couple people standing on the far side. As they turn to watch a red headed Alryan woman runs toward the pole.

With a mighty leap she clears half the canal, grabs the pole and begins to climb up it as it tips toward the opposite side.

The lithe Alryan easily makes the far shore, landing gracefully on her feet.

The Alryan athlete invites them to get in line to try Fjerljeppen, a sport invented by Avalonian farmers who needed to cross their irrigation canals.

Bundi and Bemusa are both interested in the sport, as both are strong and athletic.

Gorice and Xaran take up position to watch the others attempt the Avalonian sport. Behind them is a Korfball court.

The characters saw several Avalonians in a Korfball court, passing a large heavy ball up the court, then tossing it into the basket.

Bundi is next in line to try the leaping pole vault. He strips off his armor in preparation.

The impatient Bemusa can wait no longer and shoves past the Skandik.

The amazon clears the canal, but loses her grasp on slick icy pole.

Bemusa splashes into the frigid canal in the sub zero conditions. I unfortunately forgot to be as much of a stickler for them getting a fire going to end her hypothermia.

Once the Amazon is out of the water and warm the Skandik cleric of Tyr runs toward the canal and leaps.

Like a Norse hero or god Bundi easily clears the canal, catches hold of the slick log and shimmys up it.

Gorice and Xaran look on as the Skandik finishes his leaping vault with a flourish. A perfect 1st attempt.

The pole swings back to it's original position as the Skandik dances about the side of the canal in his old gladiator's victory dance.

Two commoners and the other athletes applaud the Skandik as he dances. Little do they know their cries will soon turn to that of terror...

A scream of terror alerts all to the horrid rime crusted corpses that lurch out of the frigid waters.

The undead swarm around Bundi, hammering him with their icy fists, ice water rooting him in place as it freezes to the flagstones.

The other athletes hurl javelins from the far side as Bundi is nearly taken down by the frozen terrors.

Bemusa comes to the Skandiks aid in the nick of time.

Gorice and Xaran try their best to blast the rime zombies from the safety of the roadside.

One of the zombies explodes in a shower of frozen flesh and cold air. With a cry to Tyr the Skandik falls, rime crusting around his face.

The Alryan comes to help the fallen hero, while Gorice blows another zombie apart with blasts of interstellar flames.

Bundi's call to Tyr saves him and he rises to his feet, but soon after the Amazon falls, crusted in rime, from the chilling aura of the zombie.

The Alryan monk tries to stabilize Bemusa as Bundi fends off the last zombie.

The Amazon comes to, and Bundi leaps away from the horrible chill of the last zombie.

The last zombie explodes in a shower of rime crusted flesh, and the other athletes come over to congratulate the heros.

The other athletes are monks of Aram Kor, and the female runs to find healers for the near frozen Amazon and Skandik.

Thanks! It was a really fun non-combat to combat encounter.

That one is a non operational hookah for tabacco use only. It's just around for setting the mood when the characters dare to venture into a sheesha bar to gather information, etc. I'll take out that pic, for CoC sake though...

I can't remember the name. We have two and they get used a lot. Ladies of the night, dancing girls, temple acolytes, monks. Brilliant.

Harry Potter Chess Pieces! Cool - lol.
What I like about this setup shots is that it's truly 3D. The different levels open up game play completely. Well Done!

Year's End Festivities in Valon, City of Ice Wizards Pt. II

Synopsis: After the battle in the Park authorities gather to commend the heros and investigate what's left of the rime zombies. The High Adjudicator Rethiena has come herself, as she was part of the congregation at the temple of Aram Kor. She declares a feast will be held in honor of the characters for their bravery. (Keep in mind they have Vermin Hunter's Licenses, so this is actually part of their long bureaucratic job title.) Runners are sent to apply for permits for the characters so they can remain in Valon proper past sun down. The characters learn that the authorities have had very little luck determining the source of the frozen undead because they explode into ice upon destruction.

The characters have a couple hours before dinner, so they attempt to collect pay for their Hunter's Work at the Civic building which houses the Vermin Hunter's Guild. Once paid they seek out other quarters, as their initial apartment was cramped, damp, and public, never mind the likelihood that other refugees could be assigned to their social housing anytime. They were already stuck with the creepy Viridian, and didn't want anymore random weirdos showing up. Instead they rent 2 rooms at the Silver Nymph Inn, which is owned by a retired Antillian merchant matron Mama Rosa.

They attend the feast in their honor, which seems more like an uptight staff christmas party than a joyous feast. There is very little alcohol and the Avalonians all stick to cliques and speak their native language, which only two of the characters speak.

At the end of the feast High Adjudicator Rethiena calls the attention of those assembled and announces that the characters are part of an ancient tradition of the Avalonians. At Year's End it is common practice to have a group of would be adventurers, especially foreigners, prove their merits in a contest of skill. They will be judged on their ability to deliver the necessary implements for the Year's End Rite to Aram Kor as well as how ethically and quickly they deliver the items. They have 12 days before Year's End.

The things they must organize are:
-12 drummers to drum in the ceremony
-11 pipers to pipe in the ceremony
-10 letters must be delivered to 10 lords to ensure their attendance
-9 dancing women to dance in the ceremony
-8 maids who in turn will milk 8 cows who are to be sacrificed
-7 swans to be sacrificed in the ceremony
-6 female geese who must at least lay one egg
-5 matching golden rings
-4 calling birds to be sacrificed
-3 game hens to be sacrificed
-2 turtle doves to be sacrificed
-1 partridge to be sacrificed on the pear tree that stands in the courtyard of the temple.

The characters agree, as they get the feeling that this could quickly expedite a lot of the red tape involved in becoming residents of Valon. It could also lead to rewards, both material and social. Custom dictates they cannot begin until the following day, and they are given promissory notes to handle legitimate expenses. The Avalonians at the feast offer little help when asked about where to find these things, and it seems the characters are on their own.

The following morning they get started early and deliver 8 of the 10 letters to the lords. The other 2 lords live in manors outside the city, so those will have to be delivered when they track down most of the livestock they'll need in Tilleasy, Valon's main agricultural vassal.

One of the characters remembers that Osric, a dour Avalonian lute player they saw at breakfast at The Chant and Club Tavern, had a drum with him. They find and hire him and a couple of his bad attitude buddies as drummers.

After hitting the streets for some time the group tracks down Liagrit the Leaper, Dance Enforcer of Valon. She coquettishly agrees to help them, and 4 of her female students will dance too. She tells them that they should just put wigs on her male dancers to make up the rest, but the party thinks they'll try to abide by the Rule, to the word.

From Liagrit they also learn of a rivalry between the legendary Mer Elf piper Erolread, and the court poet Gilthoniela. Erolread sounds like a shoe in for pipers, as he has many followers, and he often plays in their new lodgings, The Silver Nymph Inn. Instead they head for Gilthoniela's as they're sure she would know some pipers/drummers/dancers.

In the streets of Valon proper they're hassled by rough Avalonian guardsmen who won't speak Alryan (common) and are eventually sent back to the port district. No more errand running tonight. This is the first time they've encountered racist Avalonians, and it surely won't be the last. That was also the last failure in the skill challenge for the day. Not a bad day though.

The creepy Viridian Xaran remembers a story about IIgi Oathbreaker, a dwarf who once lived in Valon, who forged a set of 5 golden rings, called the Rings of Barangon. Nothing has been heard of the dwarf for some time, but after a bit of asking around they hear that the dwarf might have been buried in the cemetery in Valon proper, quite close to where the Fjerljeppen practice was going on.

They head to the graveyard, but after contemplating the Avalonian's view on grave robbing they all decide that they'd rather try legitimate avenues for the rings. As they turn to leave...

Characters (1st picture, left to right):

Xaran Mer Shunna, evil Viridian wizard
Bundi "Bump" Hrafnstyr, lawful neutral Skandik cleric of Tyr
Bemusa the Amazon, chaotic evil barbarianess
Gorice, evil Orichalan star pact warlock

The adventurers cast looks about the graveyard, hoping for clues to the whereabouts of IIgi Oathbreaker's tomb.

As they pass through the gates of the cemetery they hear the crunch of snow behind them.

They turn to see more frozen abominations, as well as a wretched looking gaunt corpse.

The rime crusted horrors charge forward, their blows freezing the heros in place.

Meanwhile the gaunt corpse spits blots of life draining darkness at them.

Xaran flees the icy aura of the zombies while the others hold the line.

One of the zombies explodes in a blast of ice and frozen guts, spraying the Skandik and Amazon.

The desiccated corpse spots the Viridian and with a quick leap...

...is over the fence and charging the wizard!

The wizard takes a rake from the gruesome claws of the wight.

The others rush the wight as it tears into Xaran, the Viridian. Meanwhile the last zombie is destroyed in an icy explosion.

Bemusa steps up and deals the withered corpse a vicious chop.

The wight lets out a hideous yell and the characters flee in fear from his horrible visage.

The heros relentlessy attack the dessicated corpse.

With a horrible gurgle the wight runs off and away from the group, ending the terror at the graveyard.

I think that was the order of things. The photos are re-enactments, as I forgot to photograph while DMing, as usual.
