I know a lot of you guys use Hirst Arts and other non-Dwarven Forge products to either compliment or create unique environments so I thought I would post these pics. I am always looking for new ways to create terrain and different environments and find other people's postings very inspirational. I am in no way trying to endorse Hirst Arts over Dwarven Forge and hope posting these pics is not considered bad taste. Really, after using/ owning both products, I'm not even sure if they really compete.

I had always planned to buy the DF Sci-Fi stuff, (did, and still do,) so, from day 1 I tried to make my HA setup different, in design, theme and colour. Well, just under 1 1/2 years ago I started working on a Hirst Arts Sci-Fi space station and finally completed it (is it ever REALLY finished?). My goal was ambitious, I had another 20 projects on the go and I had little experience with the Hirst Arts products, so I bought a few "pre-cast" block kits and some boxes of "extra" pieces. All in, (just counting the HA pieces) it cost me roughly $400(ish) US. This does not include the paint, glue, styrofoam board etc.

Time. WOW does it take time. (Keep in mind I did not even cast the blocks myself!) I really couldn't imagine how much time it would take. Once you start working with them for a while, the building is not that bad, (as long as you do NOT follow the online directions!) but the painting can take forever. Obviously, that will also depend on the quality of the paint job you wish to do. I have learned a lot while using the blocks and my next project will probably take half the time, to build and paint, but I'm still looking at hundreds of hours as I plan on doing the casting myself. I do love the limitless possibilites in working with the HA blocks though. You can implement so many details within the architecture itself, (adding columns, arches, doorways etc.)

If anyone is reading this and is on the fence regarding "DF vs Hirst Arts", my opinion would basically be this: If you want to play, buy DF. You buy it, you open the box, you start playing immediately, kind of like a video game. If you want to build, buy HA. Any money you save (and you might not save much) will be eaten up by the hours and hours (and hours) of casting, building and painting, kind of like programming your own video game. There have been SOOOOOOO many days my friends have been playing games, while I'm at home building... I think this is a very valid point in light of DF's upcoming price hike. In comparison to other products out there, you truly are getting your money's worth with DF.

In conclusion, I think there is plenty of room for both products to exist and find they compliment each other greatly.
I will be happy to support both companies and will continue to do so as long as my interest and wallet dictate!

Enjoy!

That last pick gets the rare Quadruple "YOU ROCK THE FREE WORLD" I do not like sci fi but that setup looks so good I may convert. Really nice.

You should bring this to the HA forum too! This is way out impressive! ...with of course a lot more pictures!

DF satisfies the gamer big time, while HA is the perfect stuff for anyone who played with Lego as a kid and sort of never grew out of it... :-)

I have a particularly "big" reason for using HA - the 1.5 inch floortiles, as they're made for the various Clix figures and work perfectly for Space Hulk in a way that 1 inch tiles don't when you start using the newer Terminators.

I see you picked up at least one thing from Antenociti's Workshop™, the Live Capable" Military Cargo Container, but my question is directly across from it on the other side of the set up, there are some "screens" over the HA bits, are those screens Antenociti or something else.

The room i am refering to is in the last picture, three up from bottom room, far right side.

That is one BRILLIANT setup!!!!!!

The paintwork and your attention to detail shown in this setup are both, utterly AMAZING! Truly, some gifted workmanship at hand.

Ghenghis,

Yes, those are Antenociti's screens. They look amazing close up. I will try to post a close up pick of that room, as well as the "power" room, which is directly to the right of the "red floor window" room. I grabbed pretty much everything Antenociti make for sci-fi, including the new lockers, but they weren't painted in time for these pics. They are painted now so I will put them in my next big DF Sci-Fi setup pics.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys!
(It took FOREVER!!!)

Blast,

This work is fantastic. It must be one of the best executed HA Sci Fi set ups I have seen. I also would like to see some close up particularly on where you have incorporates Antenociti's blast doors and other structural elements.

Cheers

What do you think of the Lockers?
I have been debating either getting his or the new(ish for me anyway) Anisty/Old Crow ones, and i think you have those, so was wondering which you like better. And i guess for like better i mean which fit in size wise with DF better the Antenociti's or Anisty.

And i got to say yup i love his screens, i thought they looked like his but wasn't sure and didn't know if you had found a different source for something like that which is why i asked.
