I was playing around with Sketch-Up (which I am not really any good at and it has been driving me crazy) and put together three different designs for a possible custom project. I really like the design with the three lines of skulls and the different bones. I really wanted to cross to work, but it needs something more. I also think the piece with the stack of skulls would be cool, but obviously needs to be finished. I think if a stone arch surrounded the skulls it would look pretty cool.

Anywho, what do you think?

I really want a darker and scarier place to take adventures into!

Looks quite good. And I'm also not a huge skull fan.

You really want to get this done? Do you have someone to do it for you or do you want to do it on your own?

reminds me of the catacombs of paris.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catacombs_of_Paris

Of the three pieces the one with the three lines of skulls and bones is the best.

I don't like the skulls-only piece.

Maybe you should think of another way (other than the christian cross) on the
third piece, cause i think you will use the pieces for a fantasy setting and there
a more neutral symbol would be cooler.

I was in the catacombs of paris and i found these symbols
formed by skulls surrouded by bones:
Christian cross, Heart, Archway, Sword, Circle, Square, House

Suggestions for other symbols:
Shield, Star

While I have never been the catacombs in Paris, the pictures I have seen of it are a definite source of inspiration for the project. I have been to Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini in Rome though and thought it was pretty amazing and inspirational (for this sort of thing anyway). Thanks for the design suggestions Green_Knight!

Yeah, I am pretty interested in making it happen. Generally I play GURPS and have been thinking about running a Diablo themed Dungeon Fantasy game and wanted catacombs for heros to go and explore. Ultimately I'd like to have a gothic church set, reminiscent of the Tristram church from the original Diablo and then these catacombs to go beneath it. They seem like an excellent place to rediscover the lost relics of ancient saints. I had thought about doing the church with the extensive gothic Hirst Arts line, but part of me is also interested in trying a wholly original creation. I experience with mold making and the casting. I have never really tried original sculpture on this level though. That is one reason I figured I'd play around in Sketch-Up on a rainy afternoon to see how things might go.

I am most concerned with how to make sure all the different pieces are all 2 x 2 and not a little off here and there which throws the whole thing off a few pieces down the line.

I would prefer niches in the walls to put coffins or dead bodies instead of skulls.

I think I like that idea.

One thing you have to remember with this design is what it's going to look like if a bunch of those walls are put together to form a room. The DoE, I think, comes about as close as you can to making a wall design superintricate. Any more, you get a wall so elaborate that seeing its design repeated over and over produces a cluttered, cacophonous effect. Worse, subtle patterns emerge so you see a kind of "striped" effect -- what looks great in one instance can look bad if it repeats a lot.

I think catacomb walls with niches or a few scattered skulls could be great, with maybe a few "special" elements that have the stacked design you've shown here. That would also be more flexible. If you really wanted that look, though, then I think it would be best if the skulls were randomly clustered, rather than in clear shapes or rows -- that would reduce the "stripe" effect once you put a whole layout together.

Neat idea, though.

Crioux - I completely agree with you. I was thinking that earlier on in the catacombs there would be a lot of wall niches for the monks to lay out the dead bodies. Once the body is completely decayed, they take the bones deeper into the complex and stack up the bones as I was showing here. So I think there is a excellent opportunity to incorporate both ideas.

Many of the pictures I see do have the skulls in shapes and rows though, so I think that is important element to incorporate. I did just find this picture:

Which looks like a pretty neat thing to replicate. Though I might be afraid that including elements like that would increase the likely hood of subtle patterns showing up that might not look so good, but it is still pretty inspirational.

You can also make the walls thicker to accomodate the niches.

I was able to work a bit more on the design conceptually, and I think shooting for a set of five different pieces would get this inner chambers of the catacombs well underway. These are, a straight wall piece, an outside corner wall, and inside corner wall, a floor, and a "special" wall piece for a shrine or something. Right now I just made a very simple design as a place holder. It looks like there needs to be some kind of separate tomb pieces to sit in the wings of the setup, I've got there. Hmmmm.

I just used the most straight on catacomb picture I could find to represent the bones, but I still like the idea of a wall with the three layers of skulls and then one with some kind of design. But even this I think works for a really creepy place you would rather not be hanging out.

You've got to love it when the walls around you are fashioned from the bones of the dead. "Are they planning a new addition (gulp)?"
