Check out the Ice Devil from a few sets ago (Blood War) on the right and on the left, the NEW Ice Devil from the set about to come out (Against the Giants)

I love how similar they are... Unlike some of the minis (Orcs, Lizardfolk, Hobgoblins, and so on) these actually look like the same monster type.

The new one does look a bit more "Menacing" though...

I see that point, and there doesn't seem to be a way around it (though I do prefer the new red dragon, for all its flaws -- the previous huge red I really did not like).

But I suppose that doesn't change my mind about the set because:

1) Most of the set is not resculpts, so even if every resculpt were a poorer version, it wouldn't matter to me. There are still too many new figures that have me enthusiastic to care that others have been done better before. Blazing skeleton (which, come to think of it, HAS been done before, hasn't it?), chain golem, death titan, myrmidon, fire titan, lurking wraith, tomebound arcanist...

2) For the most part, while I agree the prior versions were better, I don't think the new versions are BAD. They have their own appeal. And if they're going to re-attempt certain creatures, I would rather have two versions than the same thing over again. Sure, it would be nice if the new one were clearly superior -- but like I said, I don't think the new ones are BAD. Just different, and in some ways I admit I prefer the original. But since I don't dislike them on their own, I'm still looking forward to them, since I like the idea of a "new version."

Oh, and speaking of such things -- those awful Gricks, I found a way to save. Someone had posted pics (I think on CMON) of them repainted green, and they looked GREAT. I took a couple of mine, slapped some dark green on them, inkwashed them, and now I really like 'em. They don't have the heft of the prior version, but they're actually pretty cool now. Even in blue, I think they could have worked -- but they gave them such a bright, inappropriate blue, and no wash. I think that in many cases, the paint is what makes the new versions look bad, more than the sculpt. The new Roper, for example -- he seems to need a paint job. I figure I'll give him a bit of a brownish grey hue, to fit in with DF, and then do his tentacles in pink mottled with brown. Then I'll do his eye a good bloodshot red. He'll look pretty cool, I think.

I hear you L - I am always psyched to get new painted monster minis, even if they are inferior to what was being produced several sets ago. The Hydra, the Cyclops, the Oni and Skeletal Tomb Guardian are all examples of recent, new great minis.

However, from this new set, there really aren't that many new monsters I'm excited about. The titans I'm sour on - why give us new Huge Giants when we needed a second sculpt for the Storm and Cloud? Then they make a crappy Storm but its only large sized??? I'm digging the Huge Earth Titan to sub for a Huge Earth Elemental and I like the huge Air Elemental. Thumbs up for the Cockatrice (despite the bad piantjob) and Galeb Duhr.....but other than those, where are the new monsters?

The Grick from GoL - now THERE was a common!

Good sculpt, good paint-job and good choice of monster to get lots of!

I can try to take a few photo's later on if anyone is interested but in slight defence of the new set. I like the new Vrock demon more than the first. I copied the card and will use an old one also though.

The same Problem applies to the

Griffon (Deathknell) and the Griffon (Dungeon of Dread)
the Dungeon of Dread one is tiny compared to the old model, and has a strange coloring (metal-tones)

But top of the worst resculpts (so long) was:

Wyvern (Dungeon of Dread), compared to the old Wyvern (Abberations) the Abberations has a nice Paintjob and
a good sculpted head. The new Wyvern seems to be only basecoated green and a few brush strokes here and there...

Actually, I thought one of the worst resculpts was the otyugh. The original was far from perfect, IMHO -- came out so close to the metal Chainmail one, which was stellar, and the DDM one had a lumpy paintjob and was lacking in detail. The later DDM otyugh, however, was just terrible. Smaller, WORSE paint job, and almost no detail at all. Oty-UGH.

Dire Boar Harbinger vs Thundertusk Baor in Desert of Desolation?

The line is rampant with these kinds of declines in quality.

On the other hand, the Bullette from Dungeons of Dread was quite cool, as were the shadow panthers (even if they did have manes - go figure). And I liked the kobold archers.
