People who know me here on the board know that I like to try something new whenever I have an idea to enhance DF in a novel way. Well - earlier this year I spotted some kits for Crystal Growth in a German toy shop. I was especially intrigued by the option (on the cover) to make your own druse (made from plaster) filled with crystals.

Well - from growing them in a plaster druse to growing them in some DF pieces (or HA) isn't a big step. What kept me back for a while was the cost and the unknown content. After all - I have studied chemistry and didn't expect much to get in regard to chemicals. On the other hand - know how and having at least a starter kit is worth something as well.

So thanks to the great start of carpet sales I decided two weeks ago to get a box for crystal growth after all. It's also great in a way that I can do this together with the kids - and they loved it when I made the first crystals.

Steps I have done so far:

1) I made some seed crystals from Alumn (Potassium Aluminium Sulfate)
2) I glued three of them on a piece of green stuff and started some slower growth using the evaporation technic (yep and I added some colour)

The pictures show a first example how I envision the crystals to be used. This isn't finished yet but rather shows the progress until yesterday after several days of growth. In addition I plan to grow some of them directly in either some DF cavern piece or some Hirst Arts cavern piece. Too bad that I was to slow to snap up some four small dead end caverns from Otherworld - I saw them a week ago but they were gone this morning ...

I will update this thread with further pictures ones they show progress or once I've tried something else.

And yes - the kids love it. Daddy, daddy - can you show us the progress ;-)

Cool idea!

I wonder how stable the crystals will be once they are grown....maybe they will require some kind of fixative or coating to keep them beautiful?

Thod -

And you thought that you'd never find something to keep the kids interested in DF, whilst TEACHING them something EDUCATIONAL - OOOPS, sorry; was I not supposed to let that out?
Oh, well. Cat's out of the bag now. Guess they'll just have to learn anyway.
Darn.

This is a great idea. I am going to try this. I notice a crystal growing kit and wouldn't you know it I just picked up some dead end caverns.

I have a whole collection of crystals of all types that i have picked up at gem shops or down in North Carolina where you can sift for them in prepared sand (lots of fun really - even if a bit hokey) - and they work great for props.

The three big crystals are pretty solid. I did use superglue to glue on the original seed crystal. I got some tiny crystals and they don't stick well to the green stuff - which is both good as bad. Good as I need to get rid of growth sideways - bad as at other places I want crystals to stay.
I will have to see long term what works best.

Don't worry - there are hundreds of ways how to combine learning with gaming. I used a d10 do teach my son the numbers. And today when I came home from work I found both kids on the floor - D&D Monster Manuals in front of them. If you ask what did they learn from the Monster Manuals. Well - they did copy the monsters to paper - doing some lovely drawings. Philip copied >20 monsters on a piece of paper since yesterday - one side was full - so he turned the page around. And at least half of them you would recognize. Seems Laura did copy the brother.
Yes - I'm sure there are alternative (and maybe even better) ways to teach them drawings - but it is the motivation that is important. Philip must have spend >2 hours since yesterday to draw monsters.
Oh - and yes - I got your order for carpets. Omar says hello.

I'm still looking for the best ways to get the crystals grown. Not that much progress (at least it doesn't feel that way) since the last post. And in regard to real crystals - I bought a whole 'collection' several weeks ago on a boot fair. Seems from a magazine. Loads of different gem stones. Tugged away somewhere - but for £2 a great bargain. Must be >20 different ones. Will use them as props at some stage.

I'm sure it helped my SAT verbal score. I seem to remember learning "Gelatinous," "cumbersome," "shambling," "charisma," "fortitude," "undulate" and certainly more than a handful of other typical SAT words from my D&D books.

Smiths lyrics, incidentally, helped me with words like "sycophant" and "reel." :)
