Yes these are nice, i have been debating if i should get these molds, these look really nice in ice. I was thinking just for variety in the DF... but darn these look good

Thod,

I have never cast pieces before but seeing you pieces really makes me want to do it now. I really want an ice cavern. Could you post instructions and the mold numbers you purchased from hirst. Thanks in advance.

All

Thanks for the feedback - great that you like the Ice Cavern. Maybe one day Stefan and Jeff decide to make one as well. Actually should be a lot easier to produce as the Water sets ...

Myrthe

Off course - no problem. Everyone here on the board pleae send me his birthday and I will start production - hmm - after second thoughts - maybe not really ;-) Btw - when in February would this be - my birthday is on the 17.th of Feb.

Shadox

I've added some photos from my 'production line'. I will give step by step instructions in the next days - possibly on the HA forum pages and not here as it might be more approriate. In this case I will leave a note here in the thread together with a link. This is my biggest project so far. The pictures show a total of 3 castings - already painted and sealed. Two more castings await painting, one casting is in the mould at the moment and two more are planned to be done for a total of 8.

I learnt a lot since I did my first Ice Dungeon - therefore the big molds and the setup. Casting is done outsite - due to the smell and the non healthy fumes.

Thanks for sharing. These look great.
I assume the biggest problem is getting the right transparent clear and blue resin, as you can't paint the stuff.
Again, thanks!

Actually - it's just one kind of resin. Water clear Polyester resin. The blue on the bottom of the floor pieces is just ordinary wall paint - I reused the paint from some jobs in the house. You can see the can in the third picture on the floor.

There are issues with the paint. It tends to crack if you do a quick job. But actually I personally think this adds to the look. I don't think it will last well - therefore I'm putting some velour paper (similar to original DF) on the bottom for protection. Still one step of work I need to do.

I will post some unpainted pieces later for comparison. Also Coating the whole lot is recommended - as I never managed to get the 100% tack free. Yes - they feel perfectly - leave them 2 days stacked on each other and they tend to bake together. You don't (shouldn't) see the coat - but it is also added protection.

Thod

PS: Getting the stuff isn't a problem - E-Bay and search for Casting Resin. In the UK I can recommend Tomps - there are 2-3 big sellers in the UK on E-Bay all having similar offerings and prices.

Man, these pieces are absolutely amazing... if you sell them I would be a serious bidder!

I would NOT ask for more than this for an ice setting. Great work!

Hi Thod -

My b-day is Feb 1st. My wife's is Feb 9th. Add in Valentine's Day and it becomes a rough month for the bank account !!

Thanks for sharing the pictures and what you've learned. I want to try some casting myself in the near future (sci fi bulkheads) so I look forward to reading your full walk-through. It looks like I'll also be doing some ice cavern casting, too ;) Beautiful work, Thod !!

.....Thod is putting me in a bind here....I hate to reveal any of our future plans........but in this case i just can't keep quite anymore.......I just have to put a plug in for DF afterall.........designs are being done on the next "Cavern" type Set....(the "next" one. Not the one that is about to come out)....the "next" one................I'm wondering if you guys can guess what it's going to be........................................................................unfortunately, it will not be finished until 2008. For those who can't wait, I suppose the Hirst stuff might be somewhat compatible with our designs although i cannot guarantee anything at this point. Obviously, the freestanding Ice walls Thod has done can certainly be placed anywhere into whatever our stuff might end up looking like. For those who are able to paint and convert i am sure anything is possible....
