Hey, i just finished this beast of a game table after about a year of work. It measures 4' x 10' fully assembled, and includes a walled town, river, wooded area, farmland and mountain, capped with an orcish fortress. the mountain climbs to 4' 6" high... Translated to DnD scale, that's 270 ft.!

Okay, so maybe not quite a mountain... but a damn fine hill!

The images have all been linked due to my photographer girlfriend's delusions of artistry, but if you're interested, you can find them at this link: www.deviantart.com/deviation/45146756/ (click the thumbnail to enlarge if it isn't already in fullview)

The gridding has been finished since that last photo was taken, and the path painted as well. Unfortunately, my mum has taken my digital camera to China with her, so an updated version will have to wait.

Ummm, it isn't inflatable, right? How do you store it. Here in Holland we wouldn't even contemplate building something like this.
Love the detail though.

Wow that's big, impressive, but er... unless you plan on Spending A LOT of time there in the game don't it kind of dominate the area.... And take up a Lot of game space?

How'd you do the grid, trying to find an easier method than the one i currently use.

Wow!

See, that's the kinda thing I always really wanted, but it's also ultimately why I love DF so much. I just could never justify having anything that large. To be fair, I doubt it takes up more room than my DF collection, but I can use DF to make any number of gaming/display environments, and game boards like that are always gonna be the same thing.

Still, it's REALLY impressive. For anyone who has room for that kinda thing, I'm really envious!

Sweet! Must be nice to play on. The big hill would make a grand entrance area for your new Room & Passage set. Oh yeah, wellcome....

Yeeeah, it's pretty beastly. To do the grid was about the biggest pain in the ass i've ever experienced. Tape measure and brown sharpie. That's all.

Sorry to disappoint.

As far as its domination of the area, i don't find that to be a big problem, since the path up the mountain is so long and variable it acts like a good medium sised dungeon, and instead of just saying "Your characters walk back to town" there's always the option of placing traps and encounters and having the party plot their course manually.

That's pretty awesome, very impressive! Quite a task... is it very heavy? Looks like foam stuff. Now.... you need a dozen more that size! , but of forests, rivers, flat lands, and then you can actually have an incredible week long journey to and from town, now that would be sweet!

We may actually try our hand at doing some landscapes in he next few years...but of smaller size of course, and more modular...

Great stuff!

Yeah, the entire unit weighs about 15-20 kgs, because of all the plywood we had to use to fortify the base. The mountain is, indeed, insulation foam, sculpted with x-acto knives, razors and a heat gun (if you've never tried making caves in foam with a heat gun, DO! It's almost worth the inhalation of known carcinogens!)

Anyways, i'm moving soon, so i'm trying to find this mammoth a good home... as nice as it is, i know i can rebuild it better, lighter and more durable once i get back to Ottawa. Also, like you said, the plan is to go with square, modular peices... maybe 6" x 6" or 1' x 1'
