OK -- a very basic set of shots tonight, I didn't have the time I'd hoped for. But I still managed to get pics of the first series, along with some comparison shots to some WOTC and DF minis. (I also snapped a pic of the Reaper cave troll I painted up myself, since it really is a nice model under better circumstances)

The WOTC minis I selected were a random sampling of orcs, skeletons, and other vaguely similar-to-the-Reaper figs that I had lying around -- I didn't deliberately choose older WOTC figs or commons to make the Reaper figs look better, or pic rares or more recent ones to make Reaper look worse. I figure the comparison should be more oriented around "the closest thing WOTC makes to this" than to "the best/worst fig I could find to compare"

Anyhoo -- enjoy!

Most of the feedback from the various forums I visited are correct. The figures to look better than the Reaper website shots do indicate. As you have suggested, the minotaur is most definitely the winner. THe ogre isn't that far off. Granted the colours are a little monotone, but by and large still fairly acceptable.

Perhaps if they jazzed up the colours a little, things may be better.

But, the Minotaur and Ogre are most likely a buy on my books now :)

Thanks L for the photos

Thanks much for the photos.

I can't quite decide if the Reaper minis are any better than the WoTC ones.....There is just something about the Reaper ones that leaves me feeling like they simpler in some way....smoother, less detailed...almost like their plastic melted and ran just the tiniest bit and blurred most details....maybe it has something to do with the plastic they are made from?

Am I making any sense here? :/

i just want to say that the Dwarven Forge stuff in each photo outclass both the opposition, although they are a bit fragile(mostly just the skeletons).

thanks guys. keep up the good work.

Yeah, I have to agree with you there -- the DF minis are far superior to all the rest, IMHO. There's more detail, the paint is cleaner, they're just better.

I do think it was wise for DF to move away from minis, though. And I'm excited enough about Reaper's LE series 1 that I am looking forward to future waves. In particular, I hope they eventually do adventuring heroes -- though the line is clearly aimed at people who need masses of monsters for their games, and few people would buy masses of the same hero character, I would love it if Reaper re-visited some of their earlier PC types for the plastic line.

Though, given the similarities to the WOTC line, I suppose I wouldn't mind if they waited on any human figures -- the human faces are STILL WOTC's weakest point, my Raistlin figure from the newest line has a fantastic set of robes, and literally a golden brown BLOB for a face, with two eyes on it. You can even see the line where the blob ends and the previous, perfectly satisfactory paint job had been. It's as if they had a nice figure and then someone slopped a ton more paint on for no reason.

Faces are hard, and unforgiving of bad paint jobs. We're biologically organized to be the harshest critic of a bad paint job or likeness, too. And they're also the first thing we register with a mini, so however great the remainder of the figure, if the face looks bad, it seems like a bad mini.

Still, excited for the future of this line...

Most of them look inferior to the WOTC equivalent, I'm afraid. The minotaur does look pretty good, though. I may get one or two of those if I can. Even so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this wave does ok for Reaper, so they'll make more. They may produce some stuff that WOTC has neglected to make or has made too rare to fill the needs of the market.
