With all the splishy splashy invention that goes on around here, it can feel like very few people ever post pics of a good old fashioned basic DUNGEON. So while I was cleaning up a bit in the study, I decided to rearrange my DF into the kind of thing I would have done way back at the start. Sure, I have a small cavernous lake in one corner, and a bit of an inn-like MBS setup in another. But for the most part, this is basic Deluxe Room Set stuff, with the Ogre's den and the Narrow Passage Set thrown in for good measure.

A word about some of the accessories you may notice lying around: the lighting, as I've already indicated elsewhere, is from a Star Wars figure. The last year or two has given us a handful of lightning-weilding figures, fantastic accessories for DF. There's a chrome cup on the fireplace that I took from a Lego set. But the coolest, and this came up recently, is a wall of flame from a Mega Bloks set, of all places. The Otaku Armory from the Metal Ages Dragons line, now defunct I believe. It was a large, somewhat pricey set, but the centerpiece was a huge forge, with this fire in a cave. It lit up, too, the fire sat on lights that flickered. Pretty neat. The set is long gone, I'm selling the bulk of it on ebay in a large pile of "I don't have room any more" Mega Bloks pieces. But the fire wall ... that's just cooool. One of the best fire accessories I've seen.

Enjoy!

Awesome - love how you built the dungeon around the Ogre's Den - I've never seen that before!

Thanks! IMO, that's one of the great advantages of the Ogre's den -- it gives you instant walls for other rooms! When I was first starting, the only sets I could find were the Wicked Additions sets and the Ogre's Den. I had to place the big floors from the WA sets against the OD walls to get myself started, and I never broke the habit...

Heh heh heh. Other people have asked about the camera, too, so I'm finally going to say a bit about what I use. I take a lot of photos, of all sorts of things, but I'm not at all a camera guy, so some of this will be useful info for people, but I'm probably leaving crucial info out of the picture (as it were).

I've got a pretty cheap camera, pretty old, too. It's a Canon PowerShot SD100, you can get one now for probably a little under $100. It's a 3.2 Megapixel camera with a 2X optical zoom lens. The focal range of this F2.8 lens is 5.4 - 10.8 mm, which is equivalent to 35 - 70 mm. A lot of people say that isn't much, and they're right, if you're talking about taking pictures of targets that are far away. When I want to get a shot of the sunset, for example, I have to find a clear area to stand -- I can't zoom past the buildings around me to get the clear sky. If I want to photograph something in a tree, similarly, I can't really get to higher branches. BUT it has no problem zooming in on tiny miniatures! You can change the exposure, too, though I tend to leave it at one setting. I'm a low-tech guy.

I'm sure there are better cameras for miniature photography, but I'm VERY happy with this one. Sometimes I astonish myself at how close I can get -- I used to have such terrible cameras, in the pre-digital age, that the idea of taking these kinds of extreme close-ups on small targets was a total daydream!

I seriously think that half my enjoyment of DF comes from being able to take these kinds of photos. If I never again had access to a camera, I'd still adore my DF collection, but I'm pretty sure it would feel incomplete. There'd be no RECORD of any of it!

The fire is in the Otaku Armory, I think that's what it was called. ("Otaku" has a definite meaning, IIRC, though, which would be odd here...) It was one of the big Metal Ages Dragons sets, and it had a big forge with this light-up fire. I don't think it's out any more, but it is a pretty recent set, shouldn't hard to track down if you want it. (it was a neat set, actually, with lots of asian-influenced building elements -- nice, but one of those things I bought on a whim and then thought "what the @#$@ am I doing with this thing, and where am I supposed to put it?")

I have to say the room with the " Pool " in it is a great use of the sets. It seems to go there flawlessly. I just got a Samsung S850 for vacation and it seems to do real nice. I have to try some photo's again with it. Need to also pick up one of those tiny tripods that GS uses!
