That's Miniature Building Authority stuff, Thor, the same as my dock set.

I've seen these pieces up close. They are nice, but with the roofs off they are pretty cramped for placing minis and accessories inside. I'd use the building for outside stuff, but make the inside out of DF stuff.

This one is $119.99. I got my wife the Hobbit House for her birthday. It is really nice. The new sets coming out are fuly detailed on the inside also. Yeah the older pieces are more for outside stuff, but they are still really nice and yes all the roofs come off.

That's really nice, but I have to admit, this is when I recommend Hirst Arts instead.

For dungeons and caverns, I don't think anything comes close to DF. It's gorgeous, it's versatile, it's worth every penny.

But for things like whole buildings, with exteriors, for inns and stables and keeps, I think HA is tough to beat. It's much cheaper to get a few molds that you can use over and over than to get one building and that's all. It is true that you have to cast the pieces, assemble the building, and then paint it all yourself, and for most of us it will take a long time before we get good enough to duplicate things like MBA stuff. But ultimately we DO improve, and it is a lot cheaper in the long run. For $50-75 you can have more than enough to make an extremely cool building. The MBA stuff is just so expensive, it's hard not to at least consider the alternative....

Of course, for dungeon interiors, DF all the way. I absolutely cannot wait for those floor pieces. And when are we getting our cavernous lakes nad rivers?!?! ;)

If you have the talent to do the HA stuff, that is great. I don't. I have 2 pieces that I bought preassembled from them, both are very brittle and one was broken when I bought it. Yes, nothing touches DF for what they do. There are a number of TMA pieces that are reasble, under $50.

I saw the Building Authority guys at GenCon last year -- they had a whole little village square set up -- pretty much covering a full 4-foot square table, at least.

It was quite impressive - I went back to the booth a couple times throughout the con, trying to convince myself to buy or not to buy. I picked up a cottage and a dock set, (and got a free outhouse) but I decided it would be too much money to get a decent sized town.

And I'd agree that the interiors on the early stuff are not all that great, since they have no detail. at all. blank, gray walls and floor. I heard they were going to do a fully detailed building, inside and out, but I haven't checked their site in a while.

All in all, though, I'd get much more use from a modular set, I think - I mean, if DF were to come out with a wooden/interiors set, I could spend $300 and have all the buildings I need. $300 won't buy alot at MBA.

I have the talent, but not the time, so I'm in the same boat.

I like the MBA stuff, and I think you're a little wrong on price, shoe. For $300 you could get six or more small/medium buildings, or three big ones. They have a nice little thatched-roof cottage that's only like $30, you could have TEN for your $300 and that's a good village right there.

That said, I have so far only bought MBA accessory-type things. The dock & wharf set is a steal at $50 for 4 stone piers, 2 wooden docks, and a boathouse. You can get small boats from MBA for $10 each.

I probably won't get too much into buildings because they're a bitch to store, but I might get a couple of those cottages. They also make nice textured latex mats with cobblestone, brick, & flagstone patterns. A sharpie would easily add DF-compatible grid lines... ;)

Well, I know I could get a bunch of cottages for $300, but when I was drooling over what they had at the booth, I was thinking that $800 would buy enough of what I'd need.

But yes, $300 can buy a few buildings - just not one of everything, which is where I'd want to go if I started into it -- I'd want the Inn, a bunch of row houses, a gatehouse and wall.... and the list goes on.

I guess a better way to put it is that I'd be more satisfied with $300 of DF stuff.

-- and like you, MrMorden, I also like the dock/wharf accessories - it is more useful, but also more "modular". I just wish the MBA guys would sell some of the other accessories they had at their display -- the little merchant stalls were amazing.

They are selling them now! I just saw the stalls at The War Room (makers of MBA stuff) on sale. They also make tables with food on them, and other good stuff.
