Something i have been working on for a bit was a way to make a piller of ice that you could trap almost any Miniature in.
Some time back I got some new RTV, and last weekend i picked up some more resin, (and we have had some decent weather here in the NE as well). So over the weekend i cast a few of the ice pillers to see how they work.

Here they are bellow.

Genghis,
They look pretty cool......like the texturing you have on the pillars. Only possible comment is perhaps making them a little less cylindrical and more 'odd' or natural shaped if possible. But otherwise they look excellent :)

An absolutely great idea !! I will copy the idea for sure.

Did you use a plactic/glass cup as original shape or what else did you use ? And did you make a full mold ?

I'm currently remaking my Ice Set (number 4). The first went on E-bay - the second to Lupus. The third to Jim.

I'm 3/4 finished with casting set 4. One more cast and I have a room back. Time to look for extras ;-)

Ska;

Am I seeing things, or did you engineer these icicles as COVERS for minis?
THAT is WAY cool (no pun intended!)!!

Thod,

How about casting another set for poor old Shadox with no ice to call his own. Hmmmm.... What do you say? My email is dm underscore horn 'at' hotmail dot com

What do you say? I now own an ice elemental that would look great in that room. Let me know.

I got the idea from some of jackattack's posts back in May and July of last year. He mentioned "An irregular column of ice with an indistinct figure inside."and Columns (mentioned in another thread) should be done as clear 1"x1" freestanding uprights. I like the idea of having "regular" ice columns (perhaps wide at the top and bottom but narrow in the middle, or faceted like a big crystal), and a column that has an indistinct figure inside it (useful when a party finds a frozen knight, or when one of the party is frozen by a monster or wizard).

I like the idea a lot, i think it was when i was working on my whole ice line of overhangs but i didn't want to make just one figure trapped in the ice, and that was it. I wanted a way to get any figure (well at this point it is any medium or smaller figure, haven't done bigger) trapped in a block of ice, and then if they free them, they pop out and you have the guy who can be dead, alive, undead etc.... Back then i could have easily poped a guy into resin (have done it with my own version of the G Cube. But then he would be stuck in it and it would be that one guy.... i wanted the versitility to put ANYONE in there... so i thought about it and figured out a way to do it. Hollow on the inside.

But i couldn't figure out What i wanted the collumn to look like, in retrospect i went a bit overboard on the detail on the outside, it looked really good on the master, but in the final it is kind of over done, and makes the figure VERY indistinct, i wanted a bit more detail to show through... I thought about the crystal idea, but passed on it. I sculpted a rough solid one but didn't like it, and tiem went on. Then two interesting things happened.

Heroscape came out with that Tundra set, and i liked the looks of the big hex snow ice mounds in there, so i had the look i wanted, just had to make it.

I figured out an easy way to get the inside while i was working on another project (Flight Stands for Figures pictures comming tonight).

So had the design, had the materials, sculpted it, and it sat there till Jan when i Finally bought some RTV... then in Feb made some of the molds up, then had to get more resin. Finally everything came together, then it was to damn cold to cast in ventelated area till this past weekend...

@ Thod
Techincal answers, sort of, it was more a pure cylinder, it was oddly left over tube from something else i bought, and was intending to use for something else, the beauty was it was perfectly sized for a mini to go on or in...
2 part mold. (first i ever did of one of those)

@ jkratzer
Yup you are seeing right, i wanted something that will work for anyfig. I may make a set few with some trapped for ever figs as dressing. Heck i got the mold i can make tons of these.

One of my players wants a red version for the flame strike spell effect. so it could be usefull for multiple things ;)

I had a quick test yesterday as actually I'm working on an 'ice column' since quite a while - just not noticing it's use and never finishing it. I used the cavern floor mold and cast the 'well' (or should I say the upper door frame) 8 times to get a small round tube. Two of them to form a circle - 4 layers of them on top of each other.
I then made a mold of the whole lot. The idea was to use this to make a double/triple height one and cast round pillars which could be used for risers. Off course now I see even more use for them.
So far I used my own 1inch high mold just a single time - in creme resin. A round base fits in - as figure fits in as long as it doesn't extend further then the base. Mages are mainly fine - fighters with sword thrust ahead are a no go. And of course - I should go back, cast it a second time, make my hiugher mold and cast it in clear resin.

But thanks to get my motivation back up again.
