So, here are some pictures from KublaCon 2007. A short description:

We ran the event twice. We had 4 parties of 6 (24 players) the first night and 3 parties of 6 (18 players) the second night. Additionally, other D&D adventures were run 3 times on our layout, so we got an additional 20 or so people throught that.

For our event, the 4 parties were all participating in a scavenger hunt held in Waterdeep. They had a list of items they had to procure. 5 of the 20+ items were unique. The winner would be the party with the most items in their possesion at the end of the hunt. However, they also had to have at least one unique item.

The parties were formed and the rules were explained. They were given an invitation to a party. The party was a Live-Action/NPC/Role-Playing heavy affiar in one of the bar/food areas of the hotel. We had 6 NPC's that the parties had to role-play, bribe/ interact, etc to find out where items where and also to find out the locations that they needed to go to. This took about an hour, and we really had some fun with it.

Next, the parties dispersed. On the first night, 3 groups all went to the same spot. We had some PvP which resulted in one party being wiped out, and one party deciding to go to another location. On the 2nd night, the 3 groups went to separate places.

The levels we had in DF were

Femur's End (MBS town with a tavern) The main feature here was an arena challenge in the back of the bar. Rudy, the tavern owner, first engaged the party in a game of chance, as the current champion had no one to fight, and the party had no money to put up to fight the champion. After some spirited Liar's Dice, the party won some gold and and challenged the champion. The payoff for the fight was in inverse proportion to the number of combatants they sent forth. They wisely chose all 6, as they were somewhat surprised to find that the champion was a Fire Giant, and Rudy, who was there to make sure there was no cheating, was a beholder.

Wizard's Tower/Warehouse (mostly "traditional" DF) We built a small warehouse. The highlight of that level was a rolling ball trap (Ramp and ball from traps set) that rolled through 2 doors, only to hit a spring that would send the ball back to bounce off the far wall and so on. The Wizards tower was a nasty basement with lots of traps and then a 4 level tower. Originally, this was going to be a multi-level setup with clear plastic sheets and risers, but ended up just being laid out on one level. The highlight of this level was a trap that set off the "demonic containment procedures".

Sewers/Caves (All made of cave, cave passages, lake and river sets). The cavers were a small complex of half a dozen rooms. The highlight was a room that had a hellwasp swarm in it. The sewers were mostly rivers and lake sets surrounded by caves. The highlight of this, besides fun traps was the room of black puddings.

Church/Crypt (Featuring DoE). The church was almost entirely made of DoE. One of the unexpected highlights of this was that the new long walls have a really cool design on the back with an eye and a book. It just so happend that one of the rooms backing this wall had a book swarm to attack the party. The altar area was cool as well. Besides a vrock, there was some nasty paralyzing gas to keep the party occupied. The crypts used DoE and normal, as well as the Ogre's Den. The hightlight of this level was a vacuum room trap, and the use of the lava fountain floors.

Furthermore, as players were travelling from level to level (or when they were in the town) some of the NPC's they met could be encountered as real people walking around. One of the groups was clever enough to send out a lone sorcerer to get more info from the NPC's and scout out some of the locations. He did well and actually entered one of the DF locations for scouting. He left one room away from certain death.

In any case, the next posts will be the pictures.

As a side note, the MBS stuff is really cool. I can make a square with it, and that is sufficient to look great!

Since moving to Arizona I have really (REALLY) missed attending KublaCon!!! I still remember the days of Pacificon at the Dunfey Hotel!!! WOW!!! Some of the best memories of gaming for me.

When I started playing D&D, all I wanted was for my character to be ruler of the universe. Now, that isn't enough...
