News - I have started some carpet trading - see posting further down the page.

-----

original post

Sparked by L's posting of the HA cavern walls which prompted me to get the molds on order I started an inventory of current projects - and bits and pieces not posted yet as a lot is still work in progress.

I have started with some photos of the second and third generation Ice Set. I wanted to do a proper build up - but realized I only have 3 corners for my last Ice Set. I was sure I had cast four of them - well - one more as well as a 4 inch wall are outside to cure now (plus a few other bits and pieces).

You might notice a few Mystic Blocks in the mix and if you look closely then you might notice that the last ice set actually uses these molds. I had made some of my own - but only had one corner, a wall and 2 floor pieces. More importantly - the Mystic Block molds have 1 1/2 layer of floor pieces. This allows me to paint and add some paper velour. I was pretty happy with the solutions I tried before - some blue foam as well as some cork floor boarding (for Jim's set). But I have to admit - the latest solution looks most professional.

The hollow pillar - actually - this one was once a great idea of mine to generate these as pillars for risers. Well - they are a pain to cast. You hardly get the inner tube out. I've just done one which is solid - it's outside to cure ... Will have to see if I can add a second mold to my existing to 'extend' it. Maybe one day ...

On the bright site - I found some alternative solutions. The well is a floor piece with the inner tube added. I will have to break away a few bits as some resin seeps through - but it allows a well which has a hole all through and stone work as well.

I also haven't yet investigated all the uses of the round shaft / tube. You can use it either standing up - for climbing down - as in a well. Or sideways as a crawl through. Nasty place to be attacked. The great hero with his two handed battle axe might have to revert back to his dagger if he is trying to get through and some simple rats attack him.

Oh - and my valentines project got some crytals. I followed Kradlo advice. I actually took the bit to the haberdashery to 'try it out'. Actually the shopkeeper - female and maybe 50 years old - seemed quite fascinated and she even had heard of Dungeons and Dragons. She even asked her husband to have a look.

I followed the DF example and made them exchangeable. I bought a total of 14 gems. 4 yellow, 4 blue and 6 other colours. Was pretty upset to find one of the blue ones missing this morning - and nobody in the house admitted to have handled it. Well - it's just 30p.

What else - just spot the mushrooms. Actually - this is my first attempt to sculpt something on my own. Yes - the original was done by me - in PlayDough 'borrowed' from the kids. I tried some shading and blending technics on them - felt something simple to try this out. Couldn't have been more wrong. Didn't realize that it is easier to shade / blend a small piece as a large. You just have soooo much more space - you therefore need to have more colours to get the same effect. Well - was good learning for me - but I repainted them 3 times and still not 100% happy with them ...

Comments welcome - what do you like - what do you think is missing.

And some bits still in production ... Sometimes quite useful having a box full when inspiration strucks me ...

ok, where did you get the carpet?

Is the clear resin harder to work with than standard resin? Did you have issues with airbubbles?

Very nice! I'm just addicted to that clear resin stuff. I've never had the courage to try it out myself, but I love the look of it. It's why I can't wait for a Gelatinous Cube from WOTC! And I love the water from DF for the same reason. I've just always thought this stuff looked neat.

I'm really hoping you try some "ice caves" just because I selfishly want to see what they look like! If they come out at ALL like what I expect, I'll probably want to buy a set off you!

Here is my take on resin. So far I only used Clear Polyester Resin and Polyurethane.

Polyester is smelly like hell and quite sticky. Even after two days you will leave deep fingerprints if you are not careful. You can adapt to all of this of cause. Cast outside (with drawback of dirt being blown into your mold) or in winter time place the whole lot in a box, wrap a black refuse bag around the box - and you can safely store it inhouse.

The polyurethane warms up quite a lot. I have the feeling it is less gently to the mold (it definately is chemically more agressive). It is less forgiving if you get the mixture wrong.

Air Bubbles - actually for the ice buildings you just don't care. I once had a quite huge one due to bad casting on the bottom. These imperfections actually look quite natural. I did have problems with cloudy casts twice. In both cases it was my first batch of the day and I'm sure it was due to contamination. Either water or because I used the same stirrer for the polyurethane as for the ployester resin.

The polyurthane you can work with after 20 minutes. No stickiness at all. But I did get two batches wrong and in these cases it wouldn't cure at all or just the outside with bits left liquid in the inside. While for the polyester resin you just wait - stickiness will stop after a while you have to throw the stuff away if you get it wrong with the polyurethane.

In regard of an Ice Cavern - I guess I will have to produce more than one ;-) And I'm sure Jim will be next to ask for one. Actually you might be very, very lucky in regard to an Ice Cavern. I was just told last week that as part of restructuring I would move my department. I'm now in a new global group - with the head of the group - guess - in Boston. And there is a good chance I will be there again before end of the year.
And as I hate to ship the stuff for huge amounts as you either save money - or it takes ages this raises your chances a lot. E-Bay is great - but nothing beats direct feedback.

PS: Lawgiver - sorry forgot about the carpet. I got this one (and quite a few more) directly from Istambul/Turkey. You can get them in shops selling accessories for doll houses - but they seem extremly expensive compared to what I paid. The drawback on mine - I got 10 of them for free but one size to big. Should have been have the size. Great for a throne room - but you seldom have many of them. If you are interested in one or two - just make me an offer.
I hope to get quite a lot more when I visit Istambul in August. And this time I can select myself.

Thod,

I be wanting some of those Carpets also. Not to mention the cavern if I may get inline for one. Are you in the UK? If so I can work with you on shipping as my partners are in the UK. Let me know. We ship back and forth every 2-3 weeks.

I surely will get LOADS of caprets later this year. With the current set I will have to sort out how best to go ahead. Anyone interested - please drop me a line to: thod add loesel freeserve co uk - fill in the dots yourself. Don't like a crawler to pick up the address and getting spam - already get enough.

I also have you as Nr. 3 on my current list for an Ice Cavern. This is currently the waiting list. Economocally it would make sense to make lots - but this would bring me in conflict with Bruce (I have a $1000 limit per year) as well as in conflict with my private life - I have a full job and family.
On the other hand just doing a single one for myself isn't really useful either as the costs would just be prohibitive. So my current plan is - to do three ice caverns by this summer. If someone drops of - or I do another one, then you will be in.

In my list of current projects a while ago I mentioned carpets. While in Istanbul on holiday I bought approx. 120 miniature carpets. This was approx. 6 weeks ago - and due to the Ice Cavern it seems I never found time to spend for the 'carpet business'.

I've attached some photos. All in all I curently have >80 designs for sale. If you are worried that I use the DF pages openly for sales - I had a check with Jeff if they are interested in carpets. The reason I asked was that I've build up a connection which allows me to make a customized carpet with a design of my own choosing. And Jeff is okay if I use the DF logo on the design (you can be sure DF will get something back in return !).

The good bit - costs are damn cheap for import - so a great margin. Also all people looking for a European distributor - at least the carpets will came from Europe (but as they a light shipping to the US shouldn't be too big a problem either).

Now the downside of a custom designs - I will have to take at least 1000 carpets of my design. Doesn't kill me - but selling 10 of them wouldn't be worth it either.

So the idea is - I will 'test' the water with the carpets I have at the moment. If I can't sell 80+ of these with 60 different designs (well - some of these I want to keep) I won't even try and get 1000 of them made. Otherwise if there seems some real interest then I should follow through with it at some stage early next year. I also will ask for ideas for a design. The current idea is the logo on half the carpet and a map of a dungeon on the other half below. I will add a new thread in the Fantasy product section to ask for ideas and to share my own.

Please have a look at www.dwarvenforge.com/dwarvenforums/viewtopic.php?id=2540

But back to the carpets I have:

A single carpet is $3.50, 5 carpets for $16, 10 carpets for $30 (this applies for the small size and the bookmark size). Maximum number per person is 10 (for two weeks). First come, first serve on the designs. Afterwards I open it up to unlimited. I have some carpets only once - so if there is interest I want to ensure that not a single person (Harnloot ?) buys the whole lot and other won't get any.

The large carpets are $6 each and a max. of 2 applies (I only have 10 - and each only once).
Shipping will be the cost of the postage for a letter.

I took care to take only designs without any writings on them. I don't know what the arabic writing in black means - and that one is unique from a different company and not for sale. The only other design with writing is th white one with 'The Evil Eye' as shown in the pasage way. I felt this might be fitting for a dungeon.

It might cause problems allocating them if I get a flood of people interested (unlikely) - but for a start I will try to bypass E-bay (and save me some time listing the lot and money for you as well).

This is a first come / first serve. Just drop me a mail at JENS add LOESEL dot FREESERVE dot CO dot UK

I will append the pictures with the designs (sorry - many, many of them together - not 80 individual ones).

When I visited the company headquarter I could choose from >400 designs - and yes - I got a catalog as well - something they only hand to 'serious traders'.

Well - will be interested to hear back feedback.

Did you make a mold of some mystic blocks pieces, or did you buy their molds when they threw in the towel?
