The following posting is 'light' on DF - but I know a lot of visitors here are always on the lookout for stuff to complement their DF collection. Last weekend I went on a Wargame Fair - Salute in London. A year ago I had seen there the Hexon II terrain boards advertised.
It doesn't happen very often that I see something and feel - yes - this is a must have. They are not cheap - but DF isn't cheap either. We talk £69.95 for a box of 21 boards. But I did the plunge and think it was worth it. The nice bit is - it really doesn't take up that much space and just looks great.

Photo 1 shows the whole table. I went for the triple green to allow me some choice - as well as a tiny 'mountain' and an encarpment. I reckon I would need 7 more tiles to fill the whole table.

Photo 2 is the 'mountain' (well in scale 6 or 10 mm - here it is rather an outcrop) and the encarpment next to my HA tower.

Photo 3 - some Dreamholme accesories. They come prepainted and I have enough unpainted stuff at home to opt paying a little bit more.

Photo 4 and 5 - I think the MBS is does really look gorgeous on the hexon boards.

Photo 6 - a single Hexon II tile

Photo 7 - for size. The hexagons are two DF squares wide.

Sorry that I only had some 10 minutes time for a layout - this is the disadvantage to use the same table for breakfast ... Would have loved to play on for a lot longer.

Enjoy

Aah, the Hexon stuff is fantastic - I use it for Wargaming 6mm ACW and UltraModern gaming (home made rules with BIG games!)

Good lay out.

I mainly bumbed this up again for Shadox - as he was interested in the Hexon terrain. The company making the stuff is called Kallistra - and is in the UK. I'm really happy with the boards. They are pretty efficient to store - and a great solution for outdoors. Just use them as a base and add DF on top of it. The link to their homepage is www.kallistra.co.uk/

You get the stuff flocked or unflocked. For the Red Hand of Doom adventure I bought some unflocked stream/road pieces. For the normal boards I don't think it's worth the effort. But as I wanted to enhance the river anyhow by adding a layer of clear resin and giving the stream some more details I figured I go unflocked and start from there.

I'm pretty happy how it turned out. For more of these - have a look at the Hydra encounter in the Red Hand of Doom - Knights of the Ladder Chronicle post.

I'm now thinking to get some more blue ones to generate some more swamp tiles. The current ones are more lake ones - didn't have enough time to experiment more and make swamps out of them.

I have been looking/ drooling at the Hexon 2 boards for over a year. I really want them for some wargames I'm designing, but for what I would want to do, the price will be quite high.
I also used to want them for my dungeon crawls but since discovering/ customizing Heroscape tiles, that "want" has been replaced.
I'm sure I will end up getting them, but it may be awhile.
So, I will continue to drool...

I really like what you did with the river pieces!

Can I see some pic's of your Heroscape tiles? I have some of that stuff and used it for A&Aminiatures. I thought about Kalistra stuff for that game but went with Styrofoam, not for cost really but because I wanted to use the maps like they had them in the game. These hexes can also be stacked. I've seen some fairly complicated set ups. For about 1000 bucks you can do some fantastic set ups with 4" hexes mountains rivers " the works ".

WhiteWind,

I started using my Heroscape tiles for WKs MechWarrior... They are really functional for MW since the individual Hexs are just a bit large. Which means, that units need not be as clustered as some of the traditional Hex mats out there are...

I had not, however, thought about A&A on the HS boards, mainly because they seemed like they might be a touch small? How do they work out? I'll bet the Hexon boards on the other hand, would be awesome for A&A...

The Heroscape tiles are also the perfect size for the old Sabertooth Games Lord of the Rings TMG. Sure, the build time takes a while, but the "map" becomes more dramatic than a paper one ... I mean, we play with 3D figures, after all. The main terrain feature should be more than the crease of a fold-out map !! What is the cover save if you're behind the crease, anyway? :D

--sorry for off-topic post. I'll keep it short--
Hey Myrthe,

Did you play LOTR TMG? My favorite game! That's the game that actually got me into minis games, but when they stopped I moved to Star Wars minis, which is how I got to know Dwarven Forge and pretty much use it for Star Wars RPG now.

I loved Heroscape for LOTR TMG maps. Since neither the figs nor the terrain have anything to do with DF I'll leave it be, but I do have pix of a sweet set-up for Helm's Deep my sons and I did with Heroscape and TMG figs. Anyway...

--end of being off-topic--

Thod, I hadn't heard of Hexon before. Thanks for sharing the pictures! The MBS looks good on its grassy plain!

Yes - when I saw HeroScape for the first time I really liked the tiles. But I never got myself buying in to the game when all I ever was interested were the tiles. And I felt they looked a little bit too muck like plastic. Off course - I'm spoiled by Dwarven Forge and the nicely painted resin pieces. But it would be great if someone shows some larger set-up with HS tiles and some DF on top of it.

The tower is the 6-inch fieldstone tower from Hirst Arts. I tend to do all my HA fieldstone buildings in a DF compatible colour scheme. This way I can mix and match. If you don't play / intend to play the Red Hand of Doom adventure and if you haven't seen it yet - have a look at the layout from last week (some postings below at the moment). I'm pretty proud how I intergrated the tower into Vraath Keep.

And you also get a glimpse of the tower with the top removed to get into it.

Hi PS -

Yes, that was a great, quick game. I still can't bear to part with my collection thinking that, some day, I will be able to introduce my kids to gaming when they're older ... after all, they will be introduced to the movies.

I'd love to see the Helm's Deep set up that you and your sons did !!
