This is my first post here, though I've been lurking for quite some time now.

My friend Doug asked me to help him with his idea for an entry, so after seeing the table with just his DF pieces on it and a bunch of minis, and after he bribed me with a pirate ship from World Works Games if I helped him out, I agreed. This was my first stab at making miniature terrain, but now that I've tried it, I'm hooked. Amazing what you can do with some cheap polystyrene and a $7 foam cutter.

This first picture shows off a few of the finished little rocks and such that I put together and mounted on this green grassy paper stuff that Doug got at a hobby store when he first got this idea. I think they turned out pretty well for a first try, and these pieces gave me the confidence to try the backdrop that we decided to make for the finished diorama.

This shot shows the table with the grassy base and the large backdrop. The backdrop rock wall was made of a single 2" thick sheet of polystyrene that we cut and textured with a cheap breadknife. I'm really pleased with how this came out in particular, as it was such a large piece that I was nervous about it.

This next shot shows the entirety of our (and by our I mean Doug's) collected Sci Fi line of Dwarven Forge pieces. Really doesn't do much to fill a 30" x 48" piece of table. Hence all the foam bits. Clearly we need more Dwarven Forge sets.

Here's the DF base with the two sides flanking it. I wanted to make the sides into single large pieces for stability, despite the loss of their use as modular terrain.

I don't know how this dragon got onto a Star Wars setup. Honest! That's okay, Doug didn't believe me either, and he made me take it off the table. :(

These next shots show the entirety of the finished scene. Doug came up with the basic layout. I was just there to try to make it prettier. Trust me, I did everything I could to remove miniatures from this epic battle, but he's convinced that you can't have an epic battle unless you have every Star Wars mini ever made and then some on the table.

These last shots feature a few of the custom minis I've done. The first two, Tomtom Berber the Jawa Sharpshooter and Bonji the Cute, Ewok Bounty Hunter (pictured in front of the second most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy), are characters in our ongoing SWd20 campaign, which Doug runs for us. The George Lucas mini was made for this contest. Here he's shown looking at a map of the SW Universe, flanked by hot twi'lek chicks. Sadly the shot of Lucas didn't come out very well, but hopefully the idea comes across well enough.

Hope you enjoy the pics!

I really like that mountain wall. That looks great--especially the platform in the center on the wall. I haven't played nearly enough with my foam and hot wire knife.

Good job here. Keep use posted on any new stuff you come up with.

The detail I liked from this example the most was the shiny top surface of the rocky outcrop section (the one that the station is built upon in pic #3).

It gives the outcrop an appearance of being cut from solid rock.

I saw this post on Friday, but didn’t look at it, didn’t want it to influence what I might have done as my last set up. Very glad I didn’t look or I might not have tried making the wall I made in my Hoth set. It certainly pales in comparison. I ran out of time to get it done.
This set up is certainly chock-full of minis, is there any story behind it or what is going on?

There is indeed a story, though it's a bit far fetched. That side I left to Doug. The basic idea is that through out the Star Wars universe, there's only one location that's been used as an attack staged against a base, and that's on Dantooine. Each corner of the board represents one of the four eras presented in the SW Minis game. The front left corner, where the AT-AT is featured, is the Classic Trilogy Era. The back left corner is the New Jedi Order Era stuff, the front right corner is the Prequel Trilogy Era, and the back right corner is the Old Republic / KotOR Era stuff. Putting George Lucas in the center was our way of tying it all together.

I think the piece would have more visual appeal were it a single era setup, and after we'd setup this particular scene, we had thoughts of making a single Classic Trilogy scene, but it was, at that point, already 11:30 on Friday, and we were very tired. I'd worked 55 hours last week, and it was just a bit too much for us to tackle, taking the old setup down and coming up with a cohesive new setup.

I liked your setups very well by the way, the Tatooine setup you did made me want to get that sandcrawler toy you used. And of course, I definitely need to order some more DF pieces, though my preference is for the fantasy themed stuff.

Ah... I like knowing the story for things like this, if it isn't easily convayed in the set up.
This info about the story/or conceptt brings it together more.
Dantooine very much is a reoccuring planet in SW and it makes more "sense", now and gives an over-reaching arc that ties everything together, in an intersting way, that maked it much cooler.

I know what you mean about not having the time to do these. There are still too more ideas i had floating around in my head i just never got the chance to get out before i ran out of time. Hoth took a long time to visualize in a way that to me didn't seem done to death. And by the time i figured it out it was Friday, and i hade to bust making terrain for it, and didn't get what i want done in time. So i went with what i had. I sent it off with just a few hours to spare before the deadline.

Sorry about not getting the story up here to go with the initial post... like Minileed, I've only been lurking here for a long time... so, here's the run down of what's going on with pictures, if I can figure out how to do that...

Note: Picture references start at the second from the left at the top (for some reason the first of the Clone Wars pictures got moved to the top left corner).

The Battles of Dantooine

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away…

3,956 years before A New Hope, the Sith attack the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine. Exar Kun and Ulic Qel-Droma lead the ground forces, aided by Mandalore the Indomitable’s Mandalorian army. On the Jedi side, HK-47 stands ready to kill more meat-bags.

(First Image)

Darth Bane and Darth Nihilis have breached the wall, attacking the Jedi defenders. Bastila duels Darth Malak inside the enclave.

(Second & Third Image)

22 years before A New Hope, the Separatists attack the Republic base on Dantooine. Commander Cody organizes a counter-attack. Commander Bacara takes position on the tower, but Durge drops in from behind. Commander Gree, hidden in the foliage, attacks Separatist troops.

(Top left corner picture)

Mace Windu, Qui-gon Jinn and Barriss Offee defend the enclave’s outer walls from Jango Fett, Darth Maul, and Aurra Sing.

(Fifth Image)

Even Piell and his apprentice take on a Destroyer Droid, while Luminara Unduli battles a Super Battle Droid. R2-D2 drops in to assist her. The wookiees, led by Tarfull and Chewbacca wait for the droids to move closer before attacking.

(Sixth Image)

Quinlan Voss engages a dark side acolyte. The Republic Commandos attack a Hailfire droid. Anakin Skywalker and Yoda duel Count Dooku. A group of Jedi attack the droid army. Nute Gunray, Wat Tambor, and San Hill watch the battle’s progress.

(Seventh Image)

General Grievous infiltrated the base, followed by Asajj Ventress and Darth Sidious. Shaak Ti stands alone to stop the Bodyguard Droid’s advance on the bridge. Padme Amidala and others defend the medical bay. Chancellor Palpatine is ushered to the command center by his entourage. Grievous’ advance is blocked by Obi-wan Kenobi.

(Eighth & Ninth Images)

During A New Hope, the Empire attacks the Rebel Base on Dantooine. Stormtroopers and an AT-AT attack the base just as several bounty hunters attempted to capture Han Solo and Chewbacca.

(Tenth, 11th and 12th Images)

Obi-wan Kenobi battles the Emperor’s Dark Side minions, while Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker face-off.

(13th Image)

General Veers and his storm troopers have advanced to the bridge, where Boush has indicated that the Rebel Leaders have taken refuge. Garindan points out an easier way inside.

On the other side of the door, a group of Rebel Soldiers stand ready. Princess Leia and R2-D2 remove secrets from the computer.

(14th and 15th images)

And a jawa sniper on the mountain takes aim…

(16th Image)

25 years after A New Hope, Dantooine’s enclave was home to refugees of the Yuuzhan Vong War. The Yuuzhan Vong, with Nom Anor’s Peace Brigade attacked the refugee camp. Luke Skywalker and his Jedi Knights defend the refugees. & Jaina duels Tsavong Lah.

Princess Leia helps the New Republic Troops hold the wall. Han Solo and Chewbacca protect the bridge to the enclave entrance from Yuuzhan Vong warriors.

C-3PO stands with the refugees in the enclave, awaiting the outcome of the battle.

(17th & 18th Images)

Throughout the Battles of Dantooine, the Hutts, support whichever side gives them the better deal.

(19th Image)

In the command center stands George Lucas, the mastermind behind the Battles of Dantooine. He looks over a map of the galaxy, plotting the next Star Wars Adventure.

(20th Image)Hopefully that helps make more sense of:
