OK, this is a pretty bare-bones setup, but it's a preview -- I'm taking out all the pieces I want to use when I get my MBS expansion in the next few weeks...

Anyhoo, these are some Rackham figs I picked up when I ordered those signs (and one Reaper fig comparison to a new WOTC fig)

The purple mage is one of my favorite wizard sculpts that I've ever seen, I think. For some reason, I could NOT get him in focus (stupid magic powers!) This will do for now -- he'll look cooler in a full-on DF library. I'm including the back shots because I am very pleased with the blending/fading on his robes where he's holding that massive book.

The "Gorgon" here, that's just freaky. Nasty hair, wrinkled face, calm expression, squid body, holding some heads. *shudder*

The giant horn woman -- what does one say? Confrontation had her in black and purple, and in some ways I think that might have worked better. But I like her all the same.

And then the High Inquisitor from DDM Unhallowed meets his twin, Abraham Duskwalker from Reaper. Granted, the similarity is increased when you chop off Duskwalker's hammer and sculpt a green stuff torch instead, but they were pretty similar before that. It's the hat. Clearly.

Anyhoo, enjoy!

L--those look really nice. Tell me a little about your painting technique on Missan (spelling? the Clairvoyant and the other thing with the horns. How did you get the colors so bright and crisp? Did you prime in white and work with inks? I love the shading effects on the blue cloak.

Thanks! For Misan the Clairvoyant (the purple mage), I started with a very light purple, then inkwashed with a very dark purple, then did many layers of drybrushing, with each stage lighter and lighter, until finally I just did bright white drybrushing on the highest level. It gave the filligree on his tunic a nice crisp shape, and it blended really well on the sleeves.

For Ejhin de Vanth (horn lady), I started with the idea that she would be green and brown. I did the top in brown, then washed and drybrushed as normal. Then the robes I did in a sort of jade green. Problem was, the green was so blue it didn't really work with the brown as I'd hoped. And the figure seemed dull, so I allowed the flowing sleeves to be jade, and did an inkwash on the inner robe in purple -- then more stages of drybrushing.

So -- short answer: a light base coat, a dark inkwash, then lots and lots of drybrushing. Rackham figures really seem to take to drybrushing, they tend to have lots of wrinkles and folds and lots of runes and so forth, so drybrushing gives them real zip.

Love the wizard.... is it an out of production Rackham mini? Somehow I haven't seen that one before.... and would like to add it to my hoard (or horde depending upon your perspective).

L--thanks for the detail on the technique. What do you use for your dark inkwashes? I've been using Vallejo Smoke--the game color, not the ink. Haven't delved into the use of inks yet for any serious work.
