Anyone else here use Miniature Building Authority for their town? (outside of course - inside is DF!)

Yes, sort of.

Any buildings I have (that would be required to construct a castle/fortress), including town walls, lean tos, support buildings and a couple of keeps are all from MBA.

The bulk of my town/merchant buildings are/were originally from Armorcast. I also have a few of the unusual MBA buildings and a couple of inns from other manufacturers for added variety.

I also have a varied collection of (resin) tents, bridges, ruins and walls.

As for my DF:

My MB Sets are presently intended for mapping out specific buildings for encounters.

I am also seriously considering using MB Set flooring as a base/floor to mount all of my Armorcast buildings on.

Never thought to do a casting of an entire floor, although, I shudder to think how much mold material would go into that one :) .
Lupus,

For a floor-only mold, not too bad; I can get 2-3 large squares out of a standard Micro-Mark starter set of rubber.
However, for a walls & floor mold, HOLY GAZONKERS, Batman! Bring money and a big box and lots of time for the silicone to cure in layers! I made a 3-part mold for 6" Sci-Fi walls (this was before DF released theirs) and it took almost a quart of rubber - a pint of A, a pint of B, almost! OUCH! I was using Oomoo from Smooth-On for that project, and their pint set runs almost $25 plus shipping!
BUT again, for the flexibility of making custom pieces, it's worth it.

See ya!

Hi WW -

Like you, most of my medieval buildings (and ruins) are from Armorcast. I also thought of picking up extra MBS floors but decided agains it since the 3", 3-1/2" dimensions posed the need to cut the DF floor pieces and forcE me to loose the edge detailing. Too much effort for an unwanted end result in my opinion. Scored and stained balsa or bass wood will be fine for me ... especially when adding the damaged floors to the ruins. Who knows, I may try to replicate the DF MBS floor pattern, though ... perhaps making the 1" squares and mounting them to a plasticard base.

Do Armorcast buildings come pre-painted?

No, Armorcast only produced the resin model kits ... no pre-painted or pre-assembled buildings.

They were of very good quality and detail but, sadly, they abandoned their huge catalog of Armorcast and TerraForm terrain over a year ago. Tony Collosante's Medieval building sculpts were then picked-up by Fiend Foundry but they have been very slow in releasing the items (nothing since August, I believe). Presumably to re-tool and improve production for 2007. They do have a good sampling and I need to pick up a few things myself. Finally, Jonny Lauck of Megaminiatures WAS going to pick up the remainder (or most) of Armorcast's TerraForm line but that deal fell-through in mid-February. So, as it stands now, Armorcast is still looking for buyers and those of us jonesing for more of their cool product are still out of luck for the most part :(

L,
Very very cool set up.

I notice that your buildings have a standard dungeon piece as the base and MBS as the upper levels. Can I enquire as to how this is achieved? How do you support the second layer? Have seen it before in other set ups and always wondered how that can be done.

THanks

You could also simply use a few 2x2 2x4 and 2x8 inches heavy cardboard. They will allow almost any configuration, and are quickly removed to allow seeing inside.

Fantastic work - I think I've finally been convinced to get some of that plasticard. The signs are wonderful as well, and your pictures are just the ticket. Well done, and thanks for sharing.

Anyone have any thoughts on making one's own signs from "green stuff"? I thought I'd give it a go...

It's not a dungeon. It's an Underground Fortified Defense Installation.

Harneloot,

I own 20+ MBA buildings, 10 outer walls and about a dozen accessory buildings. I love them but they are slightly out of scale due to DDM scale creeping. (Talked about in depth in another thread) I think they are great and make great easy layouts. I looked at AC and well, I do not have time to do the work. I own 3 MBS sets and will be ordering a few more. I like what L did and he has given me many ideas. I expect that my DF MBS and MBA will live in peace together. I will probably use MBA for outside the city proper and use MBS along with pieces as L did for the inner city. Here is my advice for stacking.

Several others mentioned hardboard or cardboard etc. I typically use 1/4 pressed paper board. (I do not know it's real name ust that it si pressed paper and comes in 4x4 sheets) I then cut it to size and upto 10x10 it does not bend. If I have something bigger I use 1 inch plasic dowels cut to ~2 inches and put it in the middle of the room for support. I have a big game coming up on April 22nd that will include some of my MBA collection and a good bit of my DF stuff. I will try to take some pictures and post them.

FYI Harneloot if you are looking to get rid of your MBA.... I know someone who would.... help you with that :-)
