So I painted up the Rackham signs that we were talking about over in another thread. They look pretty decent, though I need to do some final touches to make them special. Here they are in my DF township. (the one non-DF piece is from Conflix)

Oh, and these are the roof pieces I made, finally done. Actually, they aren't really done -- the big brown one is just plasticard with no support at all and nothing to hide the "seams," and the red one needs fixing, it's a bit crooked. But they're fine for now.

Also, Reaper's vampire v. the WOTC Strahd from Unhallowed -- vampire fight go!!!

Also, Cormyrean War Wizard from Unhallowed with cool electricity magic special effects, i.e. a Star Wars action figure accessory...

L,
Very very cool set up.

I notice that your buildings have a standard dungeon piece as the base and MBS as the upper levels. Can I enquire as to how this is achieved? How do you support the second layer? Have seen it before in other set ups and always wondered how that can be done.

THanks

Thanks, guys!

I support the top level with narrow passage pieces and then just about every DF column I own! 8 red pillars, 8 sci-fi pillars -- I'm really glad I got the DoE wicked additions set because it came with 4 MORE pillars, plus some raised floors that should work essentially the same way, so I'll be able to do even more.

Plus, notice that these buildings are pretty small. A corner wall does a good job of supporting another corner wall, so in a 2x2 building, made of just four corner pieces, you'd only need one pillar right in the center to support the four corners. For a 3x2, with a single wall flanked by two corners on either side, you'd just need two pillars at the edges of the wall piece. And so on. The ability of corners to support an upper level, and the narrow passage pieces, and the columns, all together make a setup like this not too troublesome.

The downside is that you can't access the lower floors easily, because you have to remove the upper floor one section at a time. You also can't "stock" the lower floor, since the columns take up all the room. So as a gaming table, the lower floors are just window dressing, out of play. I tried to include as many stairs to doors on the upper levels as possible, to imply the lower level is just inaccessible storage -- but sometimes it is fun to put a door there.

I was surprised by how TALL the signs are -- while painting them I kinda lost sight of that. Their design is evocative of street signs, and I was imagining them as being maybe 6ft high, 8 ft at most. But they're immense, actually, and tower over all the figures -- they really wouldn't work as well on a 1-story structure, so I'm glad I had taller buildings than that.

Cool, L. Nice angles in your shots.

So the signs stand up pretty well without any counterbalance?

Yeah, they work fine. They aren't the MOST stable things in the world, since they are kinda top-heavy. But they stand fine as long as you don't knock into them. Left alone, they aren't gonna fall.

I made a stand for the extra sign -- placed a wood skewer into a slotted base with some green stuff on top and underneath to ground it. Some glue and then some brown paint. Presto! Got my third sign mounted. The barbershop sign is the least useful, I'd say (when compared to the armory and tavern signs), but it also lends itself most to painting, so it will stand out nicely. (In these pics, I hadn't yet painted it, but now the scissors are light purple and the ribbons blue)

May I ask, what Star Wars accessory is that cool electricity effect from on the Cormyrean War Wizard?

It came with the new 30th Anniversary Collection Mace Windu figure (the ones on the funky-shaped cards and come with collectible coins). Mace is deflecting lightning with his lightsaber, and the lighting comes right off.

Many SW figures come with this sort of electricity effect lately, it seems -- I stash them all away for DF accessories...

Looks great, L ... I love that Township !! I also have the same signs and, if it helps with the perception of the Barbershop sign , consider it a Tailor's or Clothier's sign. I'm thinking of trying to green stuff some other detail items to make it more of a Provisioner's shop sign ...

L -

For multi-storey builidngs, try a 1/4" piece of hardboard OR foamcore, cut to the size of the building, and painted to match the MBS floors. With that and 1-2 columns per 6" x 6" building, you should be good to go.
For larger buildings, consider casting a semipermanent wall & floor unit; take the walls, corners, and floor pieces you want in the 2nd or higher building, bowtie them if needed, and box them for a rubber mold. After the rubber sets up, de-mold the master and pour your resin building - OR, just do a larger floor, say 6" x 6", and use that. Jeff and Stefan have already made it clear that as long as we don't make and distribute stuff like this, they don't mind oour using them for building BIG layouts - I've actually got a 10" x 10" MM floor I made - and from there, I can cast one, cut it ANY WAY I NEED - L-shaped, whatever - and paint it.
That's one of the beautiful things about DF; you can use it as-is, or start from there and let your imagination run wild!

See ya!

Jim,
Thanks for that heads up....like the idea of the hardboard base for the upper level floor. Never thought to do a casting of an entire floor, although, I shudder to think how much mold material would go into that one :) What is great though is that Stefan & Jeff are semi cool with it :), provided it is for own use only.

I tried the "template" approach, building a base for upper levels, but I never got far with it. It seems like a great, low-effort solution, however. I think the problem, for me, was that very large rooms sag -- which is why, I presume, JK talks about casting them with molds. But that IS a lot of effort.

It doesn't matter to me so much, though. For a township, as I only have a small amount of room to work with, my buildings can only be a certain size anyway. Plus, you really need a lot of pieces to make four or five two story buildings (let alone three), so it would get very challenging to make larger buildings.
