OK, a bunch of toys that work with DF this time around -- some people were asking about the Lovecraft toys recently put out by SOTA, this is the exclusive black Cthulu, I think it's pretty nice for DF. Good scale.

Then we have the new McF dragons. The big lava thing is the boxed set, Fire Clan Dragon, which is just insanely huge, but of course only part of him is showing up in the lava. The rest... well, like I said in my review (in the Gaming section), these don't work as well unless you want to tear off the tiny, tiny figures that come with them. Still, neat grove of trees with the Eternal dragon, and though the men and boat with the Water Clan dragon are totally out of scale, they DO look pretty neat...

Enjoy!

There's a thread down in the Gaming forum, I believe (or maybe the non-gaming one) where arsthein and I are talking about it, and I give a direct link, but the short version is that Bigbadtoystore (www.bigbadtoystore.com) should still have one, or at least they did last time I checked.

The green version, incidentally, is quite nice, but it's a bit TOO green, and the lack of variation in the color, and the particular shade of green they chose, just made me decide against it. The black just seemed cooler.

And also, a word about the Dragons -- I took shots mainly to show a sense of scale and how they look in a DF setup, these aren't meant to be pictures that show off the dragons themselves. If you want to see better pics of the dragons, I'd recommend checking out www.spawn.com, look for dragons series 5. The dragons are actually really nice, and probably the best of the bunch -- the green/orange/black Berserker dragon -- looks really awkward in the picture I took. He's actually got a classic European draconic look to him, though he looks misproportioned and odd because of the angle on this particular photo.

Still, I vastly prefer series 4....

Here's the link to the SOTA Cthulhu (green), but the Dagon is the freakin' terror itself... I think I will end up with one of each...

One warning about the green Cthulu, for anyone who plans to order him online -- he doesn't quite look as cool as the one pictured on the SOTA website (linked above). That was a pre-production model, and the final version has a slightly less elaborate paint scheme -- less mottling, less detail. It's still pretty impressive, don't get me wrong -- but it's a notch or two below the picture on the site. The black one I've photographed is probably a good indication of the differences -- the paint jobs are about equally as subtle, the detailing equally applied -- just switch out "black" to "green" and you can get a sense of the difference.

The company that made these ran into some financial trouble, and a lot of fans were disappointed when the final product came out. It's still cool, but it wasn't as fantastic as early pics had promised....

There's a detailed review, with a lot of pics, of the green Cthulu here:

And here's a close-up of the face on the green...

That is one ugly, killer looking creature. I can totally see giving my party a collective heart attack by pulling that thing out and putting it in the middle of a cave when they ask, "What do we see?"

But isn't that always the case with miniatures and toys the preproduction paint jobs look killer but the final is er less so.

Yeah, I found a great set of shots to contrast "what is planned" with "what came out." In person, you can see that the paint job is too uniform and obscures too much detail. But even from the pics you can see my biggest objection -- they switched the shade of green from a nice brown rotten mass to a lighter, yellower, more asparagus color.

mmm... even so the 2nd picture of green Cthulhu looks pretty cool for me... I think I'll go for it... but... hey! is much bigger than I thought? Makes a McFarlane series 4 berserk two headed dragon looks small!?!
