OK, this one requires some explanation -- if you don't happen to collect superhero action figures.

So there is a line of superhero toys, and the company that makes them decided to include with each figure a part of a larger comics character, each time a wave of figures came out. If you bought all the figures, you'd have all the parts, and you could put them together to make a really large figure.

If you only bought one figure, though, you'd just have a leg. Or an arm. Etc.

So -- recently I bought a figure (Spiderwoman, for the record), and she included the head of a very silly comics villain called MODOK (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing). Since I didn't intend to build MODOK, I ended up with a very silly, overlarge, squarish head.

And the more I looked at it, the more it reminded me of the idol in Raiders of the Lost Ark. And the size seemed right for some of the large Aztec, Olmec type idols I've seen pictures of.

So I decided to paint it up -- first I used some Plasticard to wrap around the back of the head to suggest that the thing is made of gold bricks. Then I painted it up gold and - hey presto! Put it with some aquarium plants in the DF river system, and you've got a funky idol.

Enjoy!

L,
That looks really cool :) Modok was always an ugly character, and yet, somehow, he fits as a large idol figure :) THumbs up for lateral thinking

"Check out the big brain on Brett!"

I always liked Modok, even if he was a bit cheesy. Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM) was a cool bunch of evil scientists, which is a great comic book schtick.

Nice use of the Big Talking Head.

Really great angles on some fo those pictures - gives a great sense of depth and expansiveness.

Any chance we could see pictures of the whole set-up?

L;

That giant head has another possibility, if you're a Sci-Fi gamer as well; I'm sure Mike IO would recognize it instantly when I say,

MCP!

Paint it a medium electric blue, stick it on a rotating pedestal and call Bruce Boxleitner, ya know!

Whatcha think?

That idol is fanatastic! Great idea. I doubt I'd get away with something like that in my game, tho' - two of my players already spend quite a bit of time arguing the merits of various comic book artists and bemoaning how the movies get the story all wrong, etc., etc. I'd never get them past the origins of the piece. Just never that much of a fan, myself...

(Not that I didn't spend most of my free time painting inch-and-a-half goblins or writing up room descriptions...)
