The first of a series of picture sets showcasing the McFarlane Dragons series 4 figures in my DF township...

Dragon! This is the Fire Clan dragon, one of my favorites, and hence the first one I opened. I dig the pose, the flamespout is not that well done but it's a fun touch all the same. I like the coloring, too. The wings on mine are a tad warped, so he's kinda in danger of singing himself.. but in any case, it's a good pose for a siege...

Cool pics, but got to say the fire clan is my least favorite of the set...

Really? Hm. I've gone back and forth.

Before I found them/heard store reports:

Two favorites: Komodo (boxed set) and Berserker (two-headed) They looked AMAZING.
Third place: Water dragon. Looked fun-kay!
Fourth, fifth, sixth: The rest -- they all looked roughly the same -- serpentine, wiry, somewhat bland.
I did, however, like the flying pose on the Fire dragon, and the fire.

But the dragons turned out to be MUCH smaller than people expected, closer to series 2 in size than series 1 or 3. And, worse, the paint jobs, for the first time, really fall short of the promo pics. They're not bad, and they certainly aren't as disappointing as the WOTC Colossal Red that just came out. But they aren't subtle, they aren't as detailed, and they just aren't as elaborate as we expected. Promo pics are occasionally more impressive than final products, but Dragons 1-3 didn't have this sort of drop in paint quality.

SOOO - having found all but the Sorcerer Clan dragon (the one with the marble in his tail), I now revise my impression:

Komodo -- though I haven't found him, he isn't out yet, advance reviews with pics show him to be much smaller, less well-painted, and less impressively detailed than the pics from his "two up" were. (a "two up," for those who don't know, is a model twice as large as the final product used in early stages to get sculpting decisions down)

Of the five carded, currently-available dragons:

First place: Fire. He's the least different from early pics, I still love the flying pose, and the colors really grew on me. Yes, for a McFarlane dragon, his design is somewhat bland -- but he's still a great wyvern and very nicely done. Compared to Reaper's Blacksting the Wyvern, he's stunning. Reaper's figure, which I really like, looks static and flat next to this guy. And that flamespout is removeable, so it's a nice touch but you can ditch it, which is a good idea.

Second place: Berserker, or Eternal. Berserker is the most disappointing, hands down. That may be because he was the one I anticipated most. But he's tiny, he's poorly painted, he looks awkward. The promo pics show a light blue belly fading into a dark blue back, with patches of black and yellow around. The final product has awkward jumps from color to color, no blending at all practically, and the belly is the same color as the back. All the subtlety is gone. It's just much less impressive as a dragon. HOWEVER, it's still a funky two-headed dragon, and most of hte problems would be less noticeable if I hadn't seen the original pics. And besides, the others are still too generic, so he comes out ahead.

On the other hand, the Eternal dragon is very, very nice. He's slinky, his colors are great, and he has the crispness of detail that seems lacking in the Berserker. He's pretty great.

Third place: Water. I don't know, Water could edge out the other two for second place, but as with the 2 and 3 dragons, the Water is a whole other beastie. He looks great, and the drop in quality from the pics is only slight (in pics, he was speckled and organic, while the final release is more polka-dotted...ahem) But he's so unusual, I can't rank him with the others very easily. He does have a STUNNING base, with great periwinkle-hued rocks and a cave of roe, AND some clear-green seaweed growing out of the sandy floor. One of the best ocean beds I've ever seen -- it'd be worth grabbing spares of this guy just for the base, for anyone who does ocean-themed minis.

Fourth place: Sorcerer. I was never crazy about him, but from early pics he seemed to rank next to Eternal Clan and only slightly slightly below Fire clan. Even though I still haven't found him, the coloring and detail on Fire and Eternal really impressed me, so Sorcerer is the only one that still strikes me as bland. His pose is awkward, that marble is silly, and he just doesn't look all that great. Maybe in person he'll blow me away, continuing the trend of reversing my initial impressions for this line. But for now, I'm sorta glad that he was the only one I couldn't find, as opposed to one of the others...

I may come to like Berserker more once I've opened him, and the Water Clan dragon is pretty amazing. But somehow, for just dragon dragony dragonness, the Fire Clan really seemed to demand my attention first. Plus, I wanted to see how he'd look flying -- he's the only one that looked like he'd be radically different out of the package.

This is the first series since series 1 that I'm seriously considering doing some custom painting on. The second series didn't have a sculpt that grabbed me, and the third series was nice but they were so large and I was running out of room . . .! But with this series, I'm thinking it might be neat to repaint almost any of these guys. Probably not the Water Clan, though I'm sure he'd look cool in any number of color schemes. But Fire and Eternal and Berserker seem to lend themselves well to some funky variations...

I really like the Berserker , for look at least, but darn if he is smaller then he won't be a Garg, he will be back in the Huge line... oh well still lacking many real Garg minis... (sigh)

And since i am looking at alot of these for strange and intersting creatures for my Star Wars games, or upcomming setups, the Waters just look Alien, which is just perfect.

The fire just isn't a dragon ( i think by D&D it is a wyvren stlye becuse it only has two legs, the rest going into wings, ;) and while it is intersting it doesn't fit what i want, the reason i don't like it, and that paint job while i like the patern i don't like it on this creature.

the other are pretty standard (i just loved the tail on the SORCERERS if i get i will remove the ball so a mini can be constricted... ;) and the base looks like it would rock in Caverns.

Wow L - nice dragon reviews! (and enjoying your dragon attack pics as well)...so far I have all the Mcdragons but have yet to spring for series 4 - I will eventually of course - but with less enthusiasm now that I have read your reviews - shame...I have been continually impressed by the very high quality of nearly all the dragons...and I've particularly enjoyed the water ones...I do hope that the 4th series dragons live up to the high standards of the series...your notations aside...

Well, since you like the water dragons -- enjoy the final pics in the series! The water dragon attack!

The base is so large I couldn't quite get it to work on the setup I have out right now -- needs a LOT of water to work, the base is flat and needs a flat surface to look right. Then again, it's meant to be underwater so it won't ever look really right with DF....

There are also two pics of the Eternal Clan dragon -- I like the coloring and the scales, but the pose is just ... strange....

Hey thanks - both those dragons are great BTW (I think I'll order them all sometime soon - I always order the entire set together) - particularly like the first one in this case - very classic...and see what you are saying about the base for the water dragon...

And it looks like I lied about this being the last of the pics - I found the two remaining dragons from this series, and I'll have pics up later tonight (hopefully). One is the boxed set dragon, which, like the others, is posed with a figure that makes it harder to work with DF. He's also on a tree that will look almost entirely out of place. Still, folks here may like him, he's one of my favorites from the whole line.
