TOPIC: Ah, Venice

So I was making more "improvements" to my little township, and I started eyeballing the lake just behind the town. First I just added trees, and a fountain to the plaza. Then I decided I had to go for it -- Venice, city of the canal! I made a few modifications as I was taking the pics, so the three-story building and the raised bridge aren't in all the pics. But I'm very happy with this.

I also created a "bookshelf" / "random bit of ornate wall" by stacking 4 benches on top of each other.

Other things to notice:

1. In the shadows of some buildings, you may find clues that all is not what it seems here.
2. There are two figures I'm currently turning into "seated" figures, but I haven't painted them yet, so they look like they just sat in green goo. Which, to be honest, they did.

This township is rapidly becoming one of my all-time favorite DF displays. I really love it.

Just beautiful - I love it. I'm yealous that you can leave out your design - and modify it later - imrpoving it here and there. Well - one day when my kids are older it might be save again to leave a design on the floor for several days ...

Looking forward to my trip to the US at the start of October and to pick up my own MBS set.

It's not a dungeon. It's an Underground Fortified Defense Installation.

Stefan,

Good thing you're going now. At the rate the city is sinking, your kids may need aqualungs to go on THEIR honeymoon!

And, I wish I were kidding; the news doesn't seem to be all that good.

See ya!

Wow, thanks for all the kind words, guys! I really love this setup, I'm glad I'm not alone!

I'm surprised I hadn't noticed how much I wanted to do this sort of thing -- city campaigns were always some of my favorite when I first played D&D. I remember reading my City of Lankhmar book until it was nothing but shredded paper...

Anyhoo, I couldn't decide on how I liked it most, so I compromised -- now it's a half-canal city. This is the plaza where the canal district starts. I also broke up the large guildhall I'd built and made it into several smaller buildings, which made for more alleys, of which I'm quite fond.

I need more roofs, of course, and more MBS corner pieces. These buildings eat those up quickly, even if I leave one whole wall open for "cutaway" views...

See my post for Thoth about roofs; they're a great way to cover your structures. And, they can be a LOT cheaper(!) than resin stuff, or even HA plaster. And they're lighter, and they assemble faster and easier, and if someone doesn't shut me up FAST I'll ramble on about styrene plastic modeling and scratchbuilding until even Stefan and Jeff get tired of it and -

SHUT UP ALREADY, JIM!!!

Well, you get the idea.

Try it, it works. HUSH!

See ya!

The roof! The roof! The roof . . um, EXISTS!

I started making some other roofs. Plasticard shingle/tile sheets, lazily cut out and stuck together cleverly with masking tape. ;) I'll do something more proper with them when I have the time, but the "spanish tile" one works well enough unpainted (at least for now).

I think I'll do 4 roof sections - the two I have now, plus another 3x2 footprint, and then a 4x3 footprint. Those four buildings are all I can really do well anyway, though if I get in the mood and have the energy I may make a smaller 2x2 or another 3x2 one just in case. And that really would be all I could use, since I can't do any more buildings, at least until I order more MBS...

More roofs and better pics will eventually be done...
